"The page is still loading, please wait to add favorites." January 19, 2012 11:18 AM   Subscribe

A few other threads have asked about the error message "The page is still loading, please wait to add favorites." and have found solutions in turning off NoScript or AdBlock. I ran into the same issue this week and, after doing some investigating, found it was specifically necessary to make sure the cloudfront.net domain was "Allowed" in AdBlock.

You should of course have the rest of the MetaFilter-related domains Allowed as well.

I thought I would post this for future googling purposes and since comments were closed on the earlier questions.

Yes, cloudfront.net is a required domain.

We mention this on the JavaScript required page and in the FAQ here (Why can't I add favorites?) and here (I'm having a weird site problem, what should I try before posting to MetaTalk with a bug?).

What does cloudfront.net do? Google has no results for it.

Here's more info about Amazon CloudFront. It's a content delivery network. They have servers spread all over the world, which helps us get static components like stylesheets and scripts physically closer to everyone. That means faster load times.

Now that the problem's solved: Is it just me, or does "CloudFront" sound like something to do with white power?

Perhaps you are thinking of Stormfront. Wiki.

If this is the thread to mention bugs in the giving of favourites, my work machine hangs on "adding favorite...." still, most of the time.

Normally this can be worked around with a page reload, but then I have to question whether it's worth reloading just for a favourite. There seems to be a window of maybe up to a minute after a reload when the function works as it should, then it starts hanging again.

Not much I can do about it as the machine & browser settings are locked down, and I don't really expect a resolution, but just mentioning it. It's a strange sort of bug. You'd think JavaScript would either be enabled or disabled, not enabled for a minute then switched off, which is how the bug presents itself.

Cloud front is just a slangy way to refer to the grill of your classic Rolls.

What? I thought "cloudfront" meant hypocritically pretending to be holier-than-thou. You know, fronting like you hang out on clouds an' shit.

Come my friend, let us assuage that liberal guilt by sharing a slice of watermelon.

Oh cool, so it's an Akamai competitor.

Yeah, it's an Akamai competitor. It's a bit more DIY from what I can tell, though. There's no minimums and you set it all up yourself.

So uh, any chance of getting a metafilter subdomain (cloudfront.metafilter.com?) setup to point to that cloudfront stuff, rather than enabling _all_ of cloudfront? If it's something people can use to host their own stuff, we're rather trusting noone will host something nasty.

Of course, this is the Internet. Noone has bad intentions here.

If you want, you can enable the MetaFilter-only CloudFront domain: d217i264rvtnq0.cloudfront.net. You don't have to enable all of cloudfront.net.

No, you're thinking of StormFront, cloudfront is that special frosting you put on fancy cakes.
