I know others must have snapped some photos at this or other MeFi gatherings, so sling 'em on a page and post the link here. I love seeing us all candid.

Apologies for the self-link, but it was OKed by Matt. Also it is for a good cause.

PS: if I got anyone's name wrong or if anyone knows the identity of the couple of people I couldn't identify (I marked them with a '?') please let me know.

Great presentation, Evan. I mean the cast, not the lousy web pages. ;) What an interesting, unlikely looking bunch of people. Though I naturally symphatize with ?. No two are alike. Everyone looks like they give good talk. There's community weblog for you. MetaFilter brought them together; let MetaFilter sunder them apart...

Psst...jonmc...Mr. Mom wants his shirt back.
posted by mr_crash_davis at 4:44 PM on April 30, 2002

He can't have it crash, I have it meticulously beer-stained just the way I like it.

The ? in this photo is Nick Denton (former CEO of and all-around great guy). His site is but I can't find a metafilter username anywhere.

i am shocked by the intensity of the red eye upon the ladies.

I'm so glad I couldn't attend. I don't ever want to be subject to goneill's satanic gaze! ;)
posted by RJ Reynolds at 5:02 PM on April 30, 2002

What can I say RJ, us NYC MeFi studs had them entranced to the point of demonic possesion....:)

actually, more like the other way around, but what the hell...

Finally, the bearded man identified.

Those are very tasty lookin' pancakes, Evan. Good job.

The ? in this shot is the lovely and charming nstop.

This shot could be titled "jonmc in paradise"; I've got a beer in my hand, a cigarrette in my mouth, a pretty lady next to me and I'm surrounded by mefite's. As the guys in the Old Milwaukee ads said, it don't get any better than this...

Argh - make it STOP! None of you look anything like you're supposed to.
posted by obiwanwasabi at 6:00 PM on April 30, 2002

OK, I'll were we supposed to look obiwanwasabi?
posted by jonmc at 6:06 PM on April 30, 2002

The group shot came out really well. jonmc: thanks for the ID. Might as well ID the iPods, too, since there are still more pics of those: the left is mine (Bowie, David / Boyracer / Breeders / Brittle Stars / Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Butterglory) ; nicwolff's is on the right.

And you all have fabulous taste in music (those of you with whom I talked on that topic).
posted by nstop at 6:44 PM on April 30, 2002

we're all supposed to look like little aim icons.

posted by jcterminal at 7:36 PM on April 30, 2002

I'm not in *anyone's* pictures so far -- I swear I was there, I really do...other people saw me...right? Mo? Cam? Jon? Anybody?

(either that or else I look utterly awful in the pictures and I'm being spared -- in which case, thanks! :D)
posted by metrocake at 8:08 PM on April 30, 2002

I saw you, Ms. Cake and you looked fabulous.

Okay, but here's the most important question:

What was everyone drinking? ' know...a person's drink choice says a lot about them.
posted by ColdChef at 8:37 PM on April 30, 2002

First drink: mudslide. Second: whiskey sour.
posted by metrocake at 8:40 PM on April 30, 2002

Beer, lotsa beer. Brooklyn Lager mostly....
posted by jonmc at 8:48 PM on April 30, 2002

i wanna be bitter about never being able to go to these meets, but this was just hilarious.

none of you can identify the girl taking her shirt off?!?
posted by yhbc at 9:31 PM on April 30, 2002

how were we supposed to look obiwanwasabi

Well...I dunno. But not like that.

It's strange how you (well, maybe not you - perhaps it's just me) make little mental portraits of the folks whose words you're reading. For example, I always pictured Miguel as Kevin Spacey in 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' before I saw that damn press photo (which reminds me - my mefiswap cd's are done).

For some reason, I always pictured you (jonmc) as looking like (embarrassed cough) John Cusack..

...goneill's satanic gaze...

Clearly, I have too much time on my hands.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 9:50 PM on April 30, 2002

Nice photos Evan...

as for drinks, I was also drinking Brooklyn Lager... good local standard...
posted by andrewraff at 9:51 PM on April 30, 2002

Jack & Coke for me. Was going to break up the whiskey intake with a nice refreshing *Pimm's Cup* but it never happened.

Moz, you insensitive bastard. People have made fun of my glowing red eyes for years. You just *had* to pour salt on the wound....

Goneill's actually shoot laser beams. In the shape of pancakes. Which is somewhat ironic.
posted by lizs at 10:01 PM on April 30, 2002

I drank several waters, some tap, some fizzing. One with lime. Then I had a pint of Guiness, which I didn't finish (I'm not much of an alcohol drinker). I did buy a beer earlier in the evening, but it was to replace 10sball's, which I spilled all over the place, including on my pants. To paraphrase one of the MST3K 'bots, I was gonna smell like beer sooner or later. Good thing there were plenty of those Camworld t-shirts to mop up with. They're surprisingly absorbent!
posted by evanizer at 10:32 PM on April 30, 2002

i'm sorry, liz.
posted by moz at 10:36 PM on April 30, 2002

Saaaaaaay, goneill...
Hellspawn eyeballs or no, if I had any idea such a babe was flirting with me, I'd never have admitted to smelling like feet most of the time.

I'd be envious of mlang, if I thought he was straight.

obiwanwasabi, next time we'll try to look like we're supposed to (perhaps send an email with instructions beforehand?).

thanks evanizer, those are great pics. we all look like crack whores, don't we?
posted by witchstone at 6:21 AM on May 1, 2002

Like sophisticated crack whores. The kind with stylish crack pipes in designer colors.
posted by BT at 6:30 AM on May 1, 2002

I can vouch that Metrocake was there! She showed me and Mo Nickels the scrabble game on her palm pilot.

Nice pics, evanizer. But what is it with that Satanic female gaze, anyhow? (Incidentally, I've never looked this jocund elsewhere. Must have been all the crack.)
posted by cowboy_sally at 6:41 AM on May 1, 2002

Good pics - I'm not in any pics, but then, I came late and stayed for only about an hour (If anyone gets pics with a person in a tan suede fedora, that's me). I didn't get to meet most people, but I enjoyed it for a first Mefi party. As for my drinks, I had a shot of Irish whiskey and a Guiness (separately). I need to go for cheaper booze.

Just call them MeFi-stopheles....

posted by jonmc at 7:31 AM on May 1, 2002

Lately I've been a jack and coke drinker... but I figured it was probably going to be a long evening and I eventually wanted to be able to make it home. So, I too spent the night downing brooklyns.

(why didn't anyone tell me crack was acceptable among you people... i left mine at home was seriously jonesin towards the end of the night)
posted by 10sball at 8:54 AM on May 1, 2002

Man, my ass looks big in that picture with Witchstone.

Great pics, though, evanizer. As for the Satanic gazing, I didn't see any women with satanic stares.. It must be all photoshop. All the women were much too nice.

I was drinking Bass.

jonmc- you need smacked for that one! I have Tab coming out my nose now.

Sorry 'bout the redeye ladies, but my camera is specially equipped to reveal the true nature of women- as demonic temptresses that are out to steal my men. Your secret powers have been revealed! Watch out, lads!
posted by evanizer at 12:11 PM on May 1, 2002

Hey, evan, thanks, baby!

I would have worn my tight jeans if I knew you would appreciated it. I usually save them for the ladies, but would've made the exception for you. Next time - I promise. (grin)

People keep sending me notes and im's saying what a good looking bunch the NYC crowd is.

As for not looking like we're supposed to, well, I wouldn't have had anyone any other way. Rowr.

oh, and actually, I'm in this picture, too.. but you can just see my shirt. Which I've already been ridiculed for wearing by various people. Too 'stripey' they say.

They must mean the women, rich. Imagine you, me, evan, nicwolff and joe standing beside eachother. It'd look like a police lineup

Nice work, Evan. You'll be getting an invoice from my agent, as my image is licensed in 18 countries, including the US. The merchandising is just now revving up; we'll start with Nickels' Own salad dressing and be at full-window automobile decals by next December.

We had a great time meeting y'all. I have pictures too but my ISP is so fahblungit I can't e-mail them or even FTP them to update my webpages. *sigh* This is my umpteenth try to get a post to MetaTalk thru here---either you'll see it or you won't---post another meet and we'll be there!
Cheers and hoping this works at last,

Jonmc and me standing next to eachother would be enough to scare off anyone. I just should have worn my t-shirt and flannel, and then we could have cranked up some Iron Madien and head-banged for everyone.

RealJanetKagan's books is kick-ass. I'm reading it on my commute and wishing my trip was longer so I could read more, but wishing it was shorter so I wouldn't reach the end so fast.
