Check this for misery:

30/5/2 England v Sweden, kick off 9:30 UK time
30/5/2 Banns being read for my wedding at church in Amersham, attendance compulsory, kick off 10:00 UK time

:-(

I'd love to join you as well, Mo, but I'll be attempting and failing to ignore the whole thing* here in Seoul. I'm saturated.

In the last couple of years I've managed to live in Sydney during the Olympics and Seoul during the World Cup, and have little to no interest in either.

I am a bad, bad man, and I deserve to die.

(*except stuff involving Cameroon, who are very groovy for reasons only tangentially related to men kicking balls around.)

I will be at the Drayton in West Ealing. Doors open 8.30am, with big screen in garden.

Oh yeah. Baby.

As in tomorrow AM? I could do that. Half day today and no work tomorrow.

Hell of a way to start the weekend.

Go Senegal!

Oh, wait, this is about Soccer? I thought it was going to be a war.

Never mind, then.

Go Senegal, anyway.

I'd join you, but I'm going to take the day off tomorrow and spend it at the beach. I'll probably bring the TV outside and sit in the sand and watch the game.

Mo: If you were thinking of laying on transportation..?! Otherwise I'll be in the Hobgoblin on London Road, Brighton.

bifter: You have my deepest sympathies mate...bad, baad timing. You'll be even less pleased to know that my girlfriend & I are marrying next summer so as to avoid World Cup 2002, Euro 2004 and the domestic footie season...a mutual decision, of course;-)

UncleFes: Sometimes one & the same...

i_cola: thanks for the sympathy mate... ;-) At least we remembered to book the wedding for the weekend *after* the final...

I'm out of town, but I'll be back in NYC for Germany-Ireland on 6/5. How about Zum Schneider?
posted by muckster at 8:32 AM on May 30, 2002

Join you? maybe.
at Nevada Smith's? no way.
posted by dogmatic at 8:41 AM on May 30, 2002

I might be able to do Zum Schneider on the fifth, too. Let's see how the work schedule goes.
posted by Mo Nickels at 8:42 AM on May 30, 2002

Maybe; I was scheduled to watch in a friend's apartment; but I might be able to drag them there.

What's the matter with Nevada Smith's?
posted by Mo Nickels at 8:58 AM on May 30, 2002

bifter: actually England vs Sweden kicks off at 10:30 BST

Maybe you can get them to rush through the ceremony - you can still catch the 2nd half! ;-)

Mo: Having checked out the Nevada Smith's site, This & this for starters!

Jeez, you get all the freaks in NYC...

I'm going to go have lunch down the street today at Koo Koo Roo, anyone want to join me?

Nevada Smith's is a real football bar. It's great to watch a game at -- they play lots of games, games that other places don't. It's good to go there and support them because of that. The fans are rowdy which means fun.
PS: I'm not sure that I want to go to a German bar to watch Ireland play. Nevada Smith's will be hopping that day.

...must...resist...urge..to...take...piss...out...of...American...use...of...'game'...instead...of...'match'... ;-)

But best of luck to the Irish...the REAL Keano (Robbie) is a god...

i_cola, there is a very big rumour going around that your God is on his way to Brum. Just thought I'd mention it. Never mind you still have the Balti Kid.

Of course eyeball, I'll just post my daily destination here

Ah ha. That's why. I was confusing the late-evening frat-centric, Kylie Monique-playing club with the early afternoon football pub.

I used to live directly across the street, and always wondered why really loud groups of people would be gathered outside on saturday mornings always trying to wake me up from a deep drunken slumber. Now I understand.

Heh heh. Bingo! That's the place. That's why I've never been in the joint except to use the toilet. I picked it for tomorrow morning because a) it's near a client, b) it's near Veselka (so I can get some buckwheat pancakes before the match) and c) because I figured the dumb fucks will be home in bed so us, uh, civilized people can be in the bar at 7:30 a.m.

But I see that I'm wrong about the 7:30 a.m. crowd...
posted by Mo Nickels at 7:16 PM on May 30, 2002

I'll join you at Veselka if I'm awake. I probably won't go to Nevada Smith's unless they're playing Kylie. Although I did enjoy their sign out front a few months back: "Ireland vs. Iran: Football Jihad!"

Anyone know of a place in san francisco showing the game at 4:30 am? I'm thinking some seedy (real) Mission bar.

A relaxing 2130 local kick off
Now if only we could get the R&A and the USPGA to shift
those pesky majors around

Fat Buddha: That would hurt...just 2 seasons after he departed Highfield Road *waaaah!*

Ah well, at least you hate V**** as much as us :-) altho' if you have just signed Lily Savage....jeez...

vacapinta: Mad Dog in the Fog on Lower Haight looks like a possible...

Either that or you could see if The Janitor is having an open house for MeFites...

.::2 hours to go::. *pant* *drool*

France really fucked up good and proper
Without Zidane, they are a normal team, nothing really special. Djorkaeff isn't up to 90 mins anymore, he got replaced after an hour, they'll cry a lot over the Pires injury, he could have changed the team's destiny if he was fit to play.
Defense is very very slow in the center (LeBoeuf and Desailly, come on), Diouf is so fast he killed them
Probably they should put Thuram in center, put Sylvestre in.
For attack, no problem there: Henry Trezeguet Wiltord, lots of very good men

i'm so sick of this france-bashing. it's not like they're the new york yankees. or brazil.

the important thing is that senegal won, not that france lost (and, of course, that zidane is out). any time a former colony 'overthrows' its colonizers, there's cause for celebration.

(that being said, we would, of course, make an exception for any potential brazil-portugal semi-final or final matches.)

I just wonder if this will make second place in England's group look more attractive than winning it?

Every time I imagine a MeFi get together, I picture a bunch who people asking, "So who are you?" Then the other guy has to say something like "I'm stavros, the wonder chicken."

Well, given that I watched Germany-Irleand's 1:1 live this morning, I guess there's really not much of an excuse to see it again tonight.
