I raise my glass to you. I'll be having my cocktail in Louisiana at the same time. Cheers!

Hey great - I'll give them a ring and ask them to pull out all the stops!

spouses, bee-effs, jee-effs, ess-ohs, and fiends are of course welcome. but no arrgh-tee-ee-emm-tees, dammit.

(for those of you who despise "in jokes", mlang is referring to the drunken, abusive antics of Rob the EMT, seen here)

he is?

It's my birthday - do I have to pay?
posted by goneill at 8:48 AM on August 2, 2002

yeah, goneill. It looks like jonmc's old comments got erased when he transferred to his new domain, but Evan's been quite vocal about his crush on RTEMT.
posted by Ufez Jones at 8:55 AM on August 2, 2002

evan's vocal about his crushes on everyone. I think that one could call him... well... a flirt.

I can't go to pao, party people.
To make my birthday really ludicrous, I have a company softball game prior to meeting up with my internet friends.

Hi.

Where is Double Happiness again, and when is the start time?
posted by Tin Man at 9:51 AM on August 2, 2002

Double Happiness173 Mott Street

here's a map. looks like it's on mott between grand & broome.

6 to Spring is the closest, it looks like. Otherwise, N,R to Prince or N,R,Q,W to Canal. Or C to Spring or A to Canal (a bit of a walk). Or the F to Broadway/Lafayette. Those are my thoughts.
I think everyone is getting there around 7:30/8:00 ish?

posted by witchstone at 10:04 AM on August 2, 2002

Is that today?

man... I'm on vacation... too bad it's not next week. I gotta keep better track of things.

Ah, well.. have fun. Jonmc - Give all the women a kiss for me. And save some tongue for evan.
posted by rich at 10:09 AM on August 2, 2002

I believe it's Tuesday August 6, not today.

Right?
posted by Tin Man at 10:30 AM on August 2, 2002

not today

Yeah. I phoned Pão to put a good word in and spoke to a very friendly Brazilian woman. At first she couldn't find a booking for today under mlang's name. Then she said "Ah, yes, here it is - he must have booked it under the name Jennifer".

And I, of course, went "Jennifer, huh? Yup, that's him".

Tuesday, August 6. Along with Dallas, D.C., L.A., & San Francisco. It's a national thang.
posted by witchstone at 11:22 AM on August 2, 2002

Since I get off work in Danbury at 5pm, me and pips will miss dinner, but we will be there, rest assured, figure around 8. RTEMT is MeFi's snuffleupagus, only a select few(metrocake, evan, nicwolff, and joemaller) have laid eyes upon the wonderment.
posted by jonmc at 12:25 PM on August 2, 2002

Jonmc, for our meet in Dallas, can you send us one of those famous flannels of yours, seriously........that will be our MetaFlag. It will go with the decor of our establishment, flannels and half and full yards of beer .........will even splash some suds on it and shove a cigar butt in a pocket and send it back to you with the full experience.........
posted by thomcatspike at 12:33 PM on August 2, 2002

I'm not rich enough (not even wino rich enough) for a 40 dollar plate of food.

See yous at Double Happiness. I'm getting there early so I can scout out the fire exits.

posted by cowboy_sally at 12:55 PM on August 2, 2002

Finally someone else said something. $40 for a plate of Miguel? I think not! Now I feel bad about thinking $10 was a lot for a slab of ribs, fries and a drink.
posted by geoff. at 1:22 PM on August 2, 2002

yeah, 40 bucks is a bit steep. Miguel, will you buy me dinner?

Only a select few(metrocake, evan, nicwolff, and joemaller) have laid eyes upon the wonderment.

I've laid eyes on it, now to lay hands on it. And to eventually get laid.

Apologies. Sincere apologies. It's all just in jest.

cs: thoroughly enjoying the song - please - set us up near that window area. Also - it's really really really hard to find the place you have to stumble down the stairs. So look for some stairs with some hipsters near them.

Flannel, jonmc? (Scroll down for Tuesday's forecast.)
posted by lackutrol at 1:44 PM on August 2, 2002

I always wear flannel, lackutrol, usually with a semi-obscure pop-culture related t-shirt. I lived in Dade County FL for two years and still wore plaid flannel and black Chucks everyday.

Coz I'm hardcore.

and no, goneill, i won't buy you dinner; birthday or not. i bought you dinner last time we went to pao... errrr, well... ok, let's forget the whole thing.
posted by mlang at 2:19 PM on August 2, 2002

oh, and the double happiness location?

SOUTHWEST CORNER of mott & broome. yeah, just stumble down the stairs.

i'm not going... see softball game above.
(I think they are going to start me!)
posted by goneill at 2:45 PM on August 2, 2002

Starting you is easy, goneill. It's shutting you down that's the hard part.

I'm working on that e-mail invite, and adding this sudden dinner option to it. It should hit your inboxes by tonight.

maybe i set my sights a little too high?

manhattan meetup preparty: early dinner (7:30 p.m.) at the sabrett vendor at broadway and spring. five minute walk from double happiness; expect to spend $4 per person (including soda).
posted by mlang at 3:07 PM on August 2, 2002

I can't cover the $40 -- I can cover that $4.00, though. :D See y'all on Tuesday...prolly right at Double Happiness. :)
posted by metrocake at 3:52 PM on August 2, 2002

I've laid eyes on it, now to lay hands on it. And to eventually get laid.

This first post goes out to the ever-effervescent evanizer -- don't know about those RTEMT prospects (a man can dream, can't he?). He's moving to Hawaii in the fall. Maybe if you put on a grass skirt? A-lo-ha-o-i?

On another note, jon would never part with one of his esteemed flannels, but if you all can keep a secret, maybe I can slip one out of the laundry basket in the wee hours... it would make a fine emblem, indeed (maybe the red one?).
posted by pips at 7:31 PM on August 2, 2002

Just to clarify, we ARE NOT meeting at Space Untitled?

Which is fine with me, Double Happiness is 5-10 minutes closer to home and SoHo is just so...'94. I can't make dinner but I should be there by 8:30 at least

Howsabout we slip one INTO the laundry basket first?

I'm confused: are we going to the expensive Portugese restaurant or not? Someone decide now!
posted by evanizer at 9:41 PM on August 2, 2002

once and for all: the portuguese restaurant is not expensive. your $40 includes wine, appetizer/dessert, and tip. there is no coat check. cabs to double happiness afterwards can be shared (to the tune of, like, $1.50 per person). drink water, pass on dessert, and tip like my father if you want to slide through for less than $20.
posted by mlang at 9:59 PM on August 2, 2002

Here in Chicago we still call $40 expensive. Well, pricey perhaps. There's still time to move.
posted by dhartung at 11:49 AM on August 3, 2002

hmmm....

flight: $350 (heathrow - jfk)
meal: $ 4 (they do a 100% not-beef burger, right?)
drinks:$100 (we're gonna do this properly, right?)

...anyone know a decent crash pad? (",)

when are you coming to new york again - we'll plan the party around you!
posted by goneill at 11:57 AM on August 5, 2002

I keep fishing for an invite, and they keep looking at me like I'm 'special'. Maybe next May. I'll keep working our NY office though - gotta be something they have that necesitates my presence on the scene, perhaps some fairly easy job that only I can do that will require me to work 2-3 hours per day for about a week...

In the meantime, you guys have a great time, and maybe tip a glass once for me, ok?
posted by UncleFes at 12:07 PM on August 5, 2002

so nobody's coming to dinner, right? i'll revise the rez downward from ten to three (melinika, tamim, and myself) unless i hear otherwise soon, although, since it's a tuesday night, there will prolly be plenty of room for unplanned additional guests. just think of all the miguel-requested special attention you'll be missing otherwise.
posted by mlang at 3:30 PM on August 5, 2002

I was all set to introduce myself to you all, but somthing's turned up unexpectedly and I won't be taking the Hudson Line this afternoon.

Drink one down for me, and maybe I'll catch the next meetup.
posted by Smart Dalek at 9:21 AM on August 6, 2002

First off... someone actually admits to marrying jonmc? Wow. I'm going to invest in ice skates.

Second, uh.. why all this talk of food before drinking? Why not just launch right into drinking?

So, like, is anyone planning on being at this double happiness place by about 6:30? Because, like, if I go, I'll probably have to beat a retreat by about 8:30 or so, since I'm a massively whipped husband.
