The irc server turlyming seems to be down, so come on over to irc.undernet.org channel #mefi.
I'm having more blackout problems at home, so the server has been up and down.

not that i'm advocating tearing up chris' server or anything, but our small irc channel shouldn't induce much strain. (not like a node on efnet or anything.) i kind of like the isolation of the server.

i'm with moz. i like having our own server. undernet makes me feel dirty (and all spammy).

So if I type /server irc.undernet.org into chatzilla, I should connect, right? Or is undernet.org down as well? I am getting messages saying "Unknown host irc.undernet.org"
Getting hard to type the addresses because of my shaking hands. Someone please hope me!
I'm with moz and eyeballkid - it's better to have our own place to mess up and one where we can set our own rules (or not).

dg, try irc.undernet.org or graz.at.Eu.UnderNet.org

Thanks riffola - irc.undernet.org didn't work, but the second link did. The shaking is easing already :-)

No, can't connect to the proper channel. Riff's second Undernet link worked beautifully.
I don't know - I love all this dizzy to-and-froing! ;)

irc://irc.turlyming.com:6667/mefi works for those that cannot connect to irc.metafilter.com.

The post at the bottom of MetaTalk hasn't seen a comment all day, it doesn't seem that we need to worry about 'cluttering up' the front page. If the chat server goes down it should be posted here, that's what it's for. Undernet or turlyming, I'll take turlyming, a private server is usually preferable, less drama.

Well, it's down again, at least when I just tried to connect. Curse you, El NiƱo!

Yeah, I prefer a private server, but unfortunately it doesn't seem very stable (although if it's power blackouts, I guess there's not much you can do).
I'd like to set up a backup/fallback IRC server on my box, but I've found IRC servers (particularly the old-school "ircd") a pain in the arse to configure. I spent a few hours trying to get ircd to run the other day, and it wouldn't even start up (or produce an error message, for that matter). But anyway, I'm fiddling around with putting up some kind of fallback server for #mefi.
