Seriously, what is it with Vancouver? It can't be as cool as I've been lead to believe. Want to find out? How about a Vancouver meetup this summer?

July or August? Thursday, Friday or? Where? I think I'm good for anything but August 8th.

All the Vancouver people are going to be in Vegas.

MeFiVegas!

I'm up for a Van meet. I'm gone mid-July for camping (14th - 20th) but outside of that I'm open.
posted by Salmonberry at 11:01 AM on July 2, 2003

Count me in for a Vancouver meet! Plus, apparently I have no life, because I'm available any time in the next couple of months.
posted by jess at 11:09 AM on July 2, 2003

Okay, July 14th to 20th is out (gotta have Salmonberry). Is before that too early?
posted by timeistight at 11:22 AM on July 2, 2003

You couldn't do this when I still lived there, could you? I'm jealous, jealous, jealous.
posted by ashbury at 11:36 AM on July 2, 2003

Ok, I'll call it. What about July 11th? That is a Friday. One of the pubs on Granville would be good. Doolin's? Morrissey? Lennox? Why do we have 3 Irish themed pubs so close to each other?

Those are my suggestions, none have a great patio but it's easy access for all and within stumbling distance of most buses and my beloved SeaBus.

Sorry! Sorry! I meant the 25th.

July 25th.

Sorry.

Yes, my friend, it actually is that cool. Everything you've heard is true.

/can't afford to move there

Friday July 25th sounds good. How busy are those pubs? How early do we need to get there?
posted by timeistight at 12:17 PM on July 2, 2003

The 25th is fine. I was at the Lennox Pub a couple of weeks ago on a Friday, and I'd say by about 6:30 you would have been hard pressed to walk in and find a table for four (or more), but the turnover seemed steady. (Mind you, 6:30-ish is the earliest I can make it downtown, so it's a moot point for me.)
posted by jess at 1:05 PM on July 2, 2003

July 25th works for me. Pubs on Granville? Can we find one without 15 television screens?

What about The Whip, on Main Street? Or Foundation?

Oh, all right, Granville's more central. (But The Whip is only a block from where I live...)
posted by jokeefe at 1:12 PM on July 2, 2003

I'll come if he New Pornographers play.
posted by drezdn at 1:35 PM on July 2, 2003

I think central is better – South Main's a little far from Salmonberry's SeaBus. Can anyone suggest a downtown (West End? Yaletown?) pub without them TVs?
posted by timeistight at 1:35 PM on July 2, 2003

Morrissey sounds like a good choice. Not that many TVs (but yes, a few) and it'll have places for us to sit. Jo's selfless suggestion of the Whip is a consideration, though it's a lot tougher for me to get there without driving.

If I had to drive I have to stay sober, and no one wants that. Least of all me.

The Sylvia? (Lovely sunsets.) Cardero's? (Nice leather chairs.) Gerard's? (Great martinis; might be too quiet.)
posted by timeistight at 1:56 PM on July 2, 2003

That would be Wreck Beach. I think the Morrissey would be more central.
posted by timeistight at 1:59 PM on July 2, 2003

I'll come if he New Pornographers play.

Ha! You and me both.

Jo's selfless suggestion of the Whip

I know, it's really so difficult being the unselfish soul that I am... you don't know what I suffer... *sniff*

I like the Sylvia, it's a Vancouver tradition and all, but it's still a ways from the Seabus. But if it's nice, it means that we can go walk across the street and hang out on the beach, should we feel so moved.
posted by jokeefe at 2:12 PM on July 2, 2003

…and I can walk home!

Is there any concern about doing this the same day as SF? I'm afraid of overshadowing them.
posted by timeistight at 2:17 PM on July 2, 2003

LA and Seattle and Portland should also have July 11th meetups. Prince Rupert and Anchorage as well.

We'll light up the West Coast!

(And I can handle the Sylvia, I'll just cut down Denman and grab a bus over the Lions Gate)
posted by Salmonberry at 2:29 PM on July 2, 2003

I used to live on Haro, just up the hill from Sunset Beach. Twelve years I lived in the West End. All this talk of places I know and places that are new in the last couple of years is making me very melancholy. Despite having lived in Ontario for over a year now, I still consider Vancouver my home, and I often wonder when I will get to go back. Sniff. Wherever you go, have a good time, drink one for me, take pictures.

Live webcast link hookup technical voodoo type thingy!

No more coffee for me today...

So: Sylvia Hotel Pub, Friday July 27th, 6:30&8211;7:00. jokeefe to arrange the satelite hook-up.

Let's try that again:

So: Sylvia Hotel Pub, Friday July 27th, 6:30–7:00. jokeefe to arrange the satellite hook-up.
posted by timeistight at 2:36 PM on July 2, 2003

It's the 27th now? Sigh. The fact that all this changing of dates has no impact whatsover on my nonexistant plans for the rest of this month could be mildly depressing.

Okay, the hookup. I have a couple of tin cans, and if anyone has a piece of string that will reach to SF we're set.
posted by jokeefe at 2:39 PM on July 2, 2003

The 25th is a Friday. I just checked my datebook.
posted by jokeefe at 2:46 PM on July 2, 2003

My mistake. Sorry. It's the 25th. I've got to stop trying to work while I'm MetaFiltering.
posted by timeistight at 2:52 PM on July 2, 2003

Me too. Yes, July 25th.

25th
25th
25th.

No wonder we don't have meetups, can't even get the days right.

I know this guy who, on his only visit to Vancouver, bought some hash from a beachcombing naked guy.

i can't be the *only* one who is absolutely on the edge of his seat with suspense over from WHERE this hash was produced.

did he have a backpack? fanny pack? if you've got wearable luggage are you still really naked?

uh, as far as I can tell you can have it on the 27th, or on the 4th Friday in July, but not both, as uh, well, we are all still slaves to the Roman calendar. (unless you folks up in canada have some kind of wacky dynamic calendar on account of all that naked man hash, and if you do, well, i'm all about that shizznit.)
posted by fishfucker at 3:03 PM on July 2, 2003

If the hash boggles your mind, wait until you read about the naked beer vendors.
posted by timeistight at 3:16 PM on July 2, 2003

Geez. My wiff and I could maybe even motorcycle on down there. Makes a nice trip.
posted by five fresh fish at 4:49 PM on July 2, 2003

fff, please do. You and the wiff are more than welcome.

Have you all looked at the SF meetup thread lately? July 25th is Miguel's birthday. He's going to call the SF contingent during their meeting. Should we demand equal time, or just pretend that nothing is happening so that he doesn't find out?

I leave this in your capable hands...
posted by jokeefe at 5:49 PM on July 2, 2003

or just pretend that nothing is happening so that he doesn't find out?

Yeah! As long we hide it here in MetaTalk, he'll never suspect a thing.

Actually, Miguel, you're most welcome to attend, either telephonically or, preferably, in the flesh.

Indeed! We could all go with Miguel to the Portugeuse club on the Drive and have dinner.

Well I'm in Seattle, and I'm a sucker for meet-ups. Are we going to do one here or am I going to have to cross the border and party with my brethren to the North? and if so can I crash at somebody's place? and bring my dog?
