A small but extremely congenial group of Vancouver metafiltarians met at the Sylvia last night. I have pictures. (I hope salmonberry's turned out better.)

Looking forward to the San Fransisco report.

Sadly, mine turned out terrible. I lent my cam to a friend yesterday who altered the exposure settings when he used it and then forgot to change them back. So, they are pretty much useless.

I'm sure we'll do it again, had a great time. And next time, I'll check all my settings first!

Looks like you guys had fun!

i think the san francisco report is this : we blew it, a little.

i got there at around 8:30p, mostly because i had to convince myself that it'd be ok to leave the house (i've had the flu or something, like, the "summer flu", i guess), and the only people i managed to find was maacheson and aacheson, because, fortunately, macheson was wearing a metafilter baseball tee. We had fun talking and watching people alternately blow and nail the various kareoke songs but i was a little too ill to stay for long (hopefully i'm not contagious, except in my affinity for midget productions of "Lord Of The Dance").

nobody else, to my knowledge, showed. I saw one other confused looking guy who might've been there for the meetup or might've just marveled at the fact that people actually still sing Foreigner songs.

did everyone show up at 8p decide to go elsewhere? did anyone show up and give up hope of finding us because it was too crowded? was everyone in the bathroom doing lines of coke or something? what?

hey, weirdly enough though, a group of people from TechTV were there. Synchronous, no? (Cat wasn't among them).

Aww fishy that's sad. You're such a trooper though! I was pretty sure you wouldn't go because of your flu.

i showed up in SF at around 9:45. i saw a metafilter shirt but was in a bad mood due to some ah, personal things going on that night and so i just drank for a while, sang "like a virgin" dedicated to Metatalk and then left at around 12.

i guess i was a lurker? i was wearing a green flight jacket with an elvis costello patch on it, maybe i was the confused looking guy?

considering i drove 3 hours round trip to attend that was pretty stupid of me to just be drunk and anti-social. Go figure.

ah. sorry you had such a long drive there th3ph17; i bailed at around 10:00p, and the confused looking guy i was talking about showed up around 8:30ish, so, it probably wasn't you. but hey, sounds like we had 5 people there! TAKE THAT VANCOUVER.

timeistight, the group shot turned out nicely, no? We ate and drank and talked nonstop, then walked along the beach, watching the people juggling with fire and the families out enjoying the evening, chanting "Yes, Vancouver is as cool as everyone says it is!" (Well, we said it at least once, as I recall.) Then I took the little ferryboat over to Granville Island, wondering how I could ever live anywhere else... a fine night, great company, many funny #mefi anecdotes from salmonberry, and a good time had by all.

Oh, the picture of me holding the list of other shoutouts: to ashbury, who wants to come back to Vancouver, and from me, to the other mefites whom I have had the pleasure of meeting in person: languagehat, lia, and jessamyn.

Hey, thanks for the shoutout, jokeefe! I definitely want to get to Vancouver one of these days. (And if things keep going the way they are in these parts, I may stay for a while.)

I think those shots turned out pretty good, timeistight! Particularly the group shot. It's, uh, jeffj, though, not jeffg...

The Sylvia was an excellent choice of venue - beautiful view, not too crowded. In fact, as I walked past the active and warm beach scene to enter the air-conditioned comfort of the bar, it occured to me that the location was a good metaphor for Metafilter - you can see what's going on outside, and you can talk about it, but you don't really need to get involved.

In any case, as others have implied, it was indeed a fine evening. Nice to meet you all!!

jeffj, I am so having to control myself when it comes to telling all of Mefi just who won the Geek Credibility award last night, and how....

But your secret's safe with me, really. Heh.
posted by jokeefe at 4:41 PM on July 26, 2003

...but I think I won the award for having used the most primitive computing technology (punchcards way back in high school).
posted by jokeefe at 4:43 PM on July 26, 2003

Sorry about that, jeffj. I'll fix the photos.

...and salmonberry recieved the trophy for The Most Plugged In To The Most Varied Forms of Communications Tech, and timeistight won for most stylin' shirt (the Metafilter baseball jersey, of course).

Yes! I am the uberconnected geek of Vancouver cause I...oh...wait...I don't want that award.

But the shiny trophy is nice.

*seethes*
Sometimes I curse living on the bottom of the world totally disconnected from reality, especially when I hear about people walking on balmy beaches as I freeze in the coldest weather we have known here for many years, although I get to make it up in the other half of the year, I guess.

I am a little concerned about the #mefi anecdotes from Salmonberry and have been trying to remember if I have done anything really bad there. Sal, the #mefi high council will be in touch with you regarding your breaking of the #mefi code of silence, by the way.

breaking of the #mefi code of silence

Surely alcohol is a mitigating factor.
posted by timeistight at 5:44 PM on July 27, 2003

Alcohol is the reason we have so many #mefi stories.

Geek Credibility? I vaguely recall this coming up, but I don't remember being exceptional in any way. On the other hand, your belief that I would be embarrassed by this revelation makes me a little reluctant to ask for clarification...

There can be no mitigating factors for breaking the #mefi code. The code is absolute and eternal. The punishment for breaking the code is, well, of course I can't tell you that because then I would have to kill you.

dg, all the stories were about riffola's drunken rantings and the hot op action he & ecrivain provide.

Now then. Where are the Portland bbq pictures?

Oh, not to worry, jeffj. I'll remind you. Two words: Boba Fett. (You do recall the loud oohs and aahs at the time. Of course by that time I was well into my second pint, which for me constitutes as drunk as I want to get, so perhaps it was only me making all that appreciative noise...)
posted by jokeefe at 9:16 PM on July 27, 2003

At any rate, I hope no harm done. :)

Oh that's right. Not so much true credibility as just name dropping. Thanks for protecting whatever shreds of professionalism I have remaining!

I've been a little busy lately and just caught the email (thanx timeistight and salmonbery!) and this thread. Looks like you had a good time. Perhaps one day I can join you. Sigh.
