What 'Truth About Iraq' Parties?

These parties.

I'm actually riding the torrent at the moment. Will be watching it within the hour. No parties here, until it gets subtitled in Korean.

Im watching it now. Surprisingly, its not terribly biased. Of course, all things in life are biased but the arguments in the movie have the facts lined up correctly. Surprised.

Understand that the quote mentioned above isnt calling people who are patriotic scoundrels. He was explaining that using patriotism to promote something that is not right or infringes upon innocent people or the constitution is for scoundrels.

OK, Keyser, as long as you understand that the quote mentioned above was attributed to Samuel Johnson by his biographer, James Boswell, over 200 years ago. ;)

PATRIOTISM, n.
Combustible rubbish read to the torch of any one ambitious to illuminate his name.

In Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit that it is the first.

Chicago over at Healing Earths off Ashland. I downloaded it off of eMule and watched the first few minutes and just the collection of experts they have and their backgrounds is pretty impressive. I'll probably buy the DVD in support if I like it.

I'd go but I'll be watching Battlestar Galactica

I'd be going if there was one in my area. I didn't hear about this until the Metafilter post. I think this does say something: it wasn't terribly well advertised.

Despite the fact that there isn't an available location within 40 miles, the whole thing seems kinda like an Amway party to me. That, or I'd spend more time internally critiquing the host's interior design sensibilities than watching the documentary. Thank god for bittorrent.

I'll go to one as long as I get back in time from bringing my father home from the hospital. The blizzard's messed up the schedule a bit.

Include which one you will be at!

Ending a sentence with a preposition is a no-no. It should be "Include which one at which you will be".
posted by DrJohnEvans at 11:21 AM on December 7, 2003

How about "Include which one you'll be going to" ?
All of the ones near me were full, so I've downloaded it, and am seeding for other people..haven't watched it yet.

The Southampton, UK party, (7 participants), has just finished watching. A very well structured and persuasive programme. I hope the US parties aren't just a one-night wonder, preaching only to the already converted.

Should be "up with with I shall not put".

Oooooh, dammit. Too eager. Second "with" should, of course, be "which". Caught it just as I hit Post.

Include which one at which you will be": double which : "Include the one at which you will be."
posted by mischief at 4:40 PM on December 7, 2003

That did occur to me, I must admit, but there's a distinct relationship between how many times "which" is repeated in a sentence and how funny the sentence sounds, so I left it in.

Saw the flic tonight @ a party in Oregon. And it really was a party - it was fun seeing the room get into it and howl at every Bush quote and cheer at every anti-neocon comment. Thank God for Metafilter: I actually am writing the story right now for Monday's newspaper here in Klamath Falls ... and I would have had no idea a local party was happening without that info. Small quibble about the film (for Keyser, seeing as he's the only one of you who has seen it at one of these parties): What was up with that British expert? It's like the filmmakers just stuck her in there so it had "international" perspective. Good grief, she only gets one soundbyte, hardly enough to make me understand why they traveled across an ocean just to give her some face time.
posted by Happydaz at 11:53 PM on December 7, 2003

I agree that it is somewhat of a weak area in the film, but what surprised me was that there were few weak points in its entirety.

The anti-neocon disses may blow some conservative minded folks off, but there is some very solid evidence in favor of the CIA representatives comments. I think that if a hardcore republican saw this film they would probably still disagree, but may not be able to protect some of the key points our president implied during the start of the war.

The fact is, there are CIA representatives that have worked for the government 20 years talking about proof and information they personally handled. The Truth About Iraq(r) was very well done as a whole, and I am glad I had the oppourtunity to view it.

I saw the thing in Eugene, OR. Was a pretty good time, though the room was crowded as hell. And the movie was pretty good; excellent to see the piles of misinformation collected in one place.
