Minneapolis meet-up! The last one was small, but fun and I'd love to have another one, especially with the weather getting so good.

Apologies to the Mefi user who e-mailed me, saying she/he had just moved to the area and would like a meet-up. I lost your e-mail, but hopefully, you'll see this thread, and much revelry will occur.

I've been living in shame over missing the last one, so I'm interested. I'm in kinda-hectic mode right now, but with enough lead time it would be cool.
posted by COBRA! at 2:19 PM on March 26, 2004

Depending on scheduling, you could get some of the Madison contingent there. We bring with us beer, and head punches.

But don't try to schedule around us. If it works, it works.
posted by rocketman at 3:37 PM on March 26, 2004

I'd definitely schedule around head punches. How about mid-to-end May? Would that give everyone enough time?
posted by Zosia Blue at 3:44 PM on March 26, 2004

Sadly, absolutely any time would work for me. :)

As long as it's after the Film Festival (ends Apr 17), it's good for me.
posted by Utilitaritron at 4:25 PM on March 26, 2004

Okay, let's throw out some dates:

April 29
April 30
May 1
May 16

Feel free to add your own!
posted by Zosia Blue at 4:42 PM on March 26, 2004

Yay, I've been waiting for this. Sooner is better for me, let's do it while everyone still remembers. How about Friday April 16th or Saturday April 17th?
posted by bonheur at 4:55 PM on March 26, 2004

Oops, I didn't see Utilitarion's message until now. How about Friday April 30th, then?
posted by bonheur at 4:56 PM on March 26, 2004

The weekend of the 16th is out for me, too. So, the 30th would be a great date. Let's give it a few days, though, so everyone gets a chance to check the thread out. I e-mailed a bunch of people, so they should trickle in here eventually.
posted by Zosia Blue at 5:18 PM on March 26, 2004

I will SO be there this time. I was so pissy about getting sick last time and missing all the fun! Just tell me where and when and I'll take care of the how!
posted by clever sheep at 5:28 PM on March 26, 2004

I have a hectic work schedule, but set up a date, and if I can come, I'll be there.
posted by graventy at 5:30 PM on March 26, 2004

If I can catch a ride with rocketman, I'll come.
posted by interrobang at 5:32 PM on March 26, 2004

Fridays and weekends are good.
posted by mrbula at 10:09 PM on March 26, 2004

This time we must come up with a better way to recognize each other than mrbula wandering around with a sandwich board with giant pancakes on them. man, people were staring.
posted by norm at 6:02 AM on March 27, 2004

Count me in, no preference on the date.
posted by trharlan at 10:19 AM on March 27, 2004

I'm in any time. I work some Satuday nights, so Fridays would be preferable. With enough lead time I can figure something out, though.
posted by esch at 2:23 PM on March 27, 2004

Okay, Friday, April 30th seems to be a winner. If everyone agrees, it's time to figure out a place, something I'll leave to everyone else as I'm still not too familiar with Minneapolis hot spots.
posted by Zosia Blue at 2:35 PM on March 27, 2004

i may be in - as long as the rsvp list doesn't include too many mefi'ers who think voting for a president who is conducting an all out war on our environment is ok.

location suggestions:

bev's wine bar - downtown
spy house coffee shop (nicollet)
king and and i (downtown thai food and bar)
barbette (uptown)
blackforest patio (if it's nice out)
spring street bar (north east dive (to put it mildly))
posted by specialk420 at 3:33 PM on March 27, 2004

I'm under 21, so I'd naturally prefer a restaurant, cafe, or coffeeshop, but as long as I can get in, I'm fine.

Black Forest would be nice; I've never been there, but I've often looked in longingly when going to Little T's.
posted by Utilitaritron at 4:14 PM on March 27, 2004

Gah.... you fools, you have to chose to do this while I'm out of the country!
posted by nathan_teske at 8:22 PM on March 27, 2004

specialk420-- I go to Spyhouse pretty often. I wonder if we've ever been there at the same time, sniping at each other in the blue. Would be a little eerie, methinks.

And as much as I love the MSP coffeehouse scene, I vote for anyplace that serves booze. Anyone know a place where we can sneak Utilitaritron some bevvies?
posted by trharlan at 11:35 PM on March 27, 2004

I'll be there, whatever day it is. Choose some place with wifi access. :P
posted by angry modem at 12:30 AM on March 28, 2004

what about the eat street cafe up on nicollet at about 15th? they might have beer, wifi, coffee and eats, and be ok for the under-agers? ill check it out and report back.

my vote is black forest back deck outside - if its nice - underagers should be ok there too.

tharlan - i usually get in, get my coffee and get out of the spyhouse ... its a little smokey for me - im suprised you hang out with all the anarchists, commies, and lefties that populate that joint ;)
posted by specialk420 at 4:21 PM on March 28, 2004

chino latino might be fun too ... and no prob for the underagers as well...
posted by specialk420 at 4:23 PM on March 28, 2004

I like Chino Latino, but the food is pricey and the drinks are pricier. I'm imagining someplace with cheap booze, good atmosphere, not too smokey, not too loud, not too crowded, and open to all ages. Wait, we're still talking about the meet-up? I think I've drifted off into a daydream where I'm a regular at Cheers.
posted by bonheur at 6:31 PM on March 28, 2004

Black Forest is cool with me; only thing there is that if we're talking a Friday afternoon in late April, we'll wanna have someone stake out tables relatively early before it gets mobbed with after-work happy hour folks.

I'd be willing to give up a few hours at work and go drink beer on a patio in springtime, if it would help out.

Other location thoughts: the Speakeasy on Lyndale, or the Bryant Lake Bowl. And April 30 should be fine for me.
posted by nickmark at 6:40 AM on March 29, 2004

April 30 sounds ok to me, too, and any of the Nicollet-area locations would work.

And crap, I'm at Spy House all the time. I wonder how many of us are going to recognize each other...
posted by COBRA! at 7:02 AM on March 29, 2004

Non-mefi people are welcome to come too, right? I'm still up for driving my piece of shit car into Minneapolis, and feel much more comfortable if I'm letting someone else do the driving. :-)
posted by angry modem at 12:14 PM on March 29, 2004

Oh, of course. I'll probably drag along my boyfriend or a roommate or something.

And, again, I have no preference where we meet, as long as it's a place where we can squeeze the underagers in, too.

So far the nominations seem to be:

Black Forest
Eat Street Cafe
Chino Latino

with Black Forest in the lead.

I'll bring my twin.

Is her back in better shape than yours?
posted by trharlan at 1:17 PM on March 29, 2004

So I'm dense, trharlan--you want to explain what the heck that means? She couldn't figure it out either.
posted by clever sheep at 5:51 PM on March 29, 2004

I think he's referring to the last meet-up when you couldn't make it because of back problems.
posted by Zosia Blue at 6:01 PM on March 29, 2004

Man, there are brains like those of elephants around here.
posted by mrbula at 6:05 PM on March 29, 2004

No kiddin'. I'd almost managed to forget the laugh riot that was throwing my back out--of course, it was kinda overshadowed by the icky reaction to the pain meds. Rest assured that there will be NO heavy lifting whatsoever for the 14 days prior this time around.

And I won't go swimming within 30 minutes of finishing a meal, either.

Satisfied, trharlan?
posted by clever sheep at 6:35 PM on March 29, 2004

Satisfied, trharlan?

Absolutely. 'Twas just a wee bit of innocent ribbing. Sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way.
posted by trharlan at 8:44 PM on March 29, 2004

S'okay--I shouldn't have been growly.

Hey, didn't I promise to buy the first pitcher way back when? I'm good for that.
posted by clever sheep at 4:27 AM on March 30, 2004

What, no nomination for the Chatterbox?
posted by norm at 9:36 AM on March 30, 2004

I hereby nominate the Chatterbox.
posted by trharlan at 9:58 AM on March 30, 2004

One thing about the Chatterbox- it gets amazingly hectic there on weekend nights. There might be a pitched battle for space. Although I suppose the same thing applies to the Black Forest patio, and pretty much anywhere else.
posted by COBRA! at 11:26 AM on March 30, 2004

Hmm, the Black Forest patio is pretty cool, and you can get large beers.

On the other hand, you can't play Atari at the Black Forest.
posted by norm at 12:03 PM on March 30, 2004

To COBRA's point, I'd like to take this opportunity to reiterate my selfless willingness to leave work early and go drink beer in order to make sure there's plenty of chairs...

Especially if the buses are running again.
posted by nickmark at 12:09 PM on March 30, 2004

If the buses aren't running by then, I'm going to have myself a cry. Also, I'm going to have to go with Black Forest, even though I've never been there. The patio sounds cool.
posted by Zosia Blue at 12:15 PM on March 30, 2004

So, uh, any consensus? We have a while to decide, but this thread will quickly slip off the page and I'll be too lazy to scroll down and click back.
posted by Zosia Blue at 9:48 AM on March 31, 2004

Completely ambivalent. Maybe we should take votes?
posted by trharlan at 12:11 PM on March 31, 2004

Hey fellow Minneapolites. I usually just lurk, can I come too?

I would also suggest a place like the Blackforest that has outdoor seating as that will accommodate both smokers and non-smokers.
posted by Juicylicious at 6:22 PM on March 31, 2004

If the buses aren't running by then, we can carpool. I'll volunteer my vehicle.
posted by Coffeemate at 6:39 PM on March 31, 2004

The consensus seems to be Black Forest patio, Friday April 30th, 8pm. Friends, lurkers, monkeyfilter members, etc. are all welcome to attend.

Who wants to email Matt to make sure this goes on the sidebar of the main page?
posted by bonheur at 7:05 PM on March 31, 2004

Actually, I'm down with all of that except the 8pm part -- I'd like to start a bit earlier. Easier to beat crowds, more daylight on the patio, easier to stake out tables if you get there before the dinner crowds, and more convenient from a "having beer with folks after work" point of view.

If there's a general consensus towards time, I'll go along with it, but I didn't see it mentioned earlier, and I'd like to put my oar in for an earlier time.

I mean, I'm no lightweight, but staking out tables and drinking beer by myself all evening seems... well, lonely, is all.
posted by nickmark at 7:36 AM on April 1, 2004

It would be difficult for me to get anywhere earlier than 6. Maybe we can discuss a time when it gets closer to the date? For now, let's just say, Black Forest, April 30th and then start up a thread about a week beforehand. Sound good?
posted by Zosia Blue at 1:06 PM on April 1, 2004

Sounds good to me.
posted by Utilitaritron at 6:15 PM on April 1, 2004

black forest it is.

might be a good idea to think about a rain-out location as well - indoors at the black forest is pretty grim.

i nominate the back bar as AZIA (across the street - kitty corner) my friend leah pours drinks - she'll take care of y'all. good appetizers as well.

How many people showed up to the last one? Are there any pictures?
posted by esch at 7:09 PM on April 4, 2004

The last one was small - maybe 8 people? - and I don't recall a lot of pictures being taken, mostly because we were too involved in the conversation. It really was a lot of fun, so you should definitely hit up this next one.
posted by Zosia Blue at 11:57 AM on April 5, 2004

so 6-8 pm on the 30th or whenever the hell someone wants to show up?
