It was definitely fun. We should all do this again soon, especially if the weather decides to get nicer.
And amberglow -- there were shout-outs! Or did you mean specifically to you?

I'm so glad I looked at the photos before I read the comments. Freaked my shit right the hell out. Mission accomplished.
"Hi!" back to all you lovely Minneapolis Mefites! It looks like it was a very successful and fun meet-up.

Awesome pictures. Looks like it was fun.
You did totally set yourself up for some Minnesota jokes by talking about how cold it was right from the first picture, though.

I'm having meet-up envy. And I'm sure mine won't be as big as everyone else's.

Amberglow, we did a shoutout to you from Toronto. But we all took a vow not to talk about it. Now that I have, I'll probably be mysteriously disappearing in the next day or two [hears a sound, looks nervously around].

Um, yeah, she sure is. Huh, CD? As I was looking at the photos, I was thinking that both Clever Sheep and Zosia Blue were really, really attractive; and then suddenly, there's one of them holding up a callout-sign with my name on it. Completely truthfully, I blushed.

I don't know if I broke some MeFi-meetup thou-shalt-not-comment-on-physical-appearance rule by mentioning that.

I think the track record suggests that we have no such rule.

Don't sweat it too much. You were probably moved by simple beauty. Is that not noble?
The chief characteristic of the classical Greeks that I love and admire was how they integrated so many concepts into a unified worldview—concepts that are, to modern Western sensibilities, quite disparate. One of these was physical beauty. To them, physical beauty was only one admirable human trait among many. Thus, around Plato's raucous Symposium dinner table, they could remark without embarrassment on Socrates's ugliness while, simultaneously, praising incomparably lovely Agathon—a young man who, among others, vied for Socrates's attentions and his right-hand seat. Because, of course, Socrates was beautiful and desirable in other ways.
Our culture exalts physical beauty above almost all other virtues, particularly in the case of women. It is, sadly, perhaps most determinate of perceived self-worth. On the other hand, in understandable opposition to this, there's a counter-impulse that tries to minimize or deny physical beauty as we would a metaphorical gold-spoon hung around a trustfund baby's neck—it's never to be mentioned. Thus, there are situations where one must comment on someone's physical beauty; and, similarly, situations where one must, above all, not. But I think of physical beauty as I would athleticism, or another talent or trait. I don't think of the exceptional sprinter as a better person than most. I don't think of the brilliant thinker as a better person than most. And I don't think of the physically beautiful man or woman as a better person than most. I simply find something worth admiring and enjoying in all three. Why not?
And if you or I or anyone else should find one or more of the people in those photos notably attractive; well, there's no harm in saying so, as long as it's not validating what is, quite certainly, often a destructive social status quo. I imagine there's a way to do this. It probably involves tact, honesty, and kindness. :)

Ha, thanks. I think. But, really, it was the MeFi guys that were the hotness of the evening. I almost wanted to suggest a Minneapolis Male Mefites Calendar. Or something. Anyway.
For the MSP people and anyone else who might be interested in attending a Minneapolis get-together, I started a Yahoo! Group here. I was originally going to work with Meet-Up, but this way is more interactive. Hopefully, no one has any moral oppositions to Yahoo Groups.

Awwww, MELANIE! Consider my heart really really warmed. You know I'm your biggest fan!
GREAT photos, by the way.

...And for our next gathering, I repeat: let's go lawn-bowling on the upper deck at Brit's. Everybody looks better in natural light--except Zosia, who's not allowed to get any cuter.

I showed the pictures to my roommate, who said, "Wow, they all look pretty normal." I can't figure out what this means about Metafilter in general, or myself in particular. Was she expecting a gang of freaky goons? Am I a freaky goon, thus causing her to thing that all MeFites are freaky goons? Or, is SHE the goon?
All questions of freakiness and gooniness aside, I heartily welcome the lawn-bowling. Unfortunately, my only related skill is being able to get to Brit's. That'll have to do.
