Ok, I'll admit it, MonkeyFilter is better than MetaFilter because their meetups have two things MetaFilter meetups rarely, if ever, have: actual living, breathing females and Wendell!

Wendell is both exactly as I pictured him, and yet unimaginably different - at the same time.

All those other non-Metafilter people were completely and totally nondescript.

It's a joke! Lighten up, for fuck's sake.

I've been going to MoFi more and more lately, though I've not been posting that much over there (for which I'm sure the monkeys are infinitely grateful). I love MeFi and don't want to make this a contest, but MoFi's been really impressing me in many ways lately. Hell, half of all the good FPPs here were at MoFi first. And the monkeys really are way nicer than mefites. A bit chattier, too; both of which I think is related to a higher proportion of females.

Really, I'd encourage mefites and mefite lurkers to get MoFi accounts. [Um, don't ruin MoFi (I'm sure that's what they worry about every time there's someone on MeFi promoting MoFi).]

For the record, the pic mathowie linked to was a publicity shot for the MonkeyFilter version of "Charlie's Angels" featuring Wendell as Bosley. The real studboy in residence was behind the camera, MoFi's squidranch, who had the ladies enthralled until he started acting like a high school cheerleader (for a straight guy, he's been living in West Hollywood way too long).

I must note that last winter's L.A. Meetup was 5 lovely ladies to 4 dudes (and 6 MeFites to 3 MoFites, including the effervescent Space Kitty, who I have to stop meeting like this).

Languagehat, your shoutout was held up by mandyman and cali, not Space Kitty. Cali got the award for the kinda-farthest trip to the Meetup, being homebased in Santa Barbara, but coming directly from visiting other friends in Burbank. The foot in this picture belonged to matt's crush mandyman (living out matt's fantasy of kicking me in the face). But Kitty was the only one who officially displayed any body art (on her ANKLE, you preverts).

For the record, that sticker on my forehead was the Evil Wendell, which I gave copies of to all attending, in addition to "Hello, My MonkeyFilter Name Is..." badges and pictures of my bungee-monkey (it's a stuffed animal, you preverts).

I felt more than a little self-conscious, having gained 40+ pounds since the previous MeetUp AND having most of my upper teeth literally in the shop for repairs, resulting in that mysterious Mona Lisa cringe. But I was made very welcome by everyone EXCEPT the New York Jets Fans in Exile who otherwise dominated the atmosphere at Barney's Beanery on a Sunday Afternoon.

To steal a line from "Airplane", I definately picked the wrong week to give up sex...

PSSST... the squiddly guy has promised to host another MeetUp at L.A.'s legendary Musso & Frank's in the near future and I will be willing to smuggle in several MeFites under my coat...

Matt's grand plan for Metafilter has always been to meet chicks

You say this like it's a bad thing, like anything in the world that was ever created was for a purpose besides this. Painting the Mona Lisa? To get chicks. Building the pyramids? Trying to impress some chicks. Castro attempting to acquire nukes in the early 60s? Chicks.

"but MoFi's been really impressing me in many ways lately."

I wish I could say the same. It would be nice to see a version of the MeFi model that was just as good, but without all the snarky, elitist, boysclub bullshit.

But every time I go over there I fail to find anything useful beyond the FFPs. The discussions are cute and chatty. They aren't even discussions. Just cute little IM-style one-liners. I understand it's a friendlier place, and that's great. But friendly without any compelling discussion?

What exactly is the draw over there? So it's like AskMe, but without being useful or informative? Seriously.

I’ve never been to a MeFi meetup so I must ask why did Matt qualify “females” with “living, breathing”? Do MeFites have a habit of bringing the other kind? Or is it some sort of Realdoll thing?

posted by wendell at 11:55 AM on October 27, 2004

All right, you're onto us now, arse_hat. There aren't really any female MeFites. The ones you see at the meetups are just very convincing crossdressers hired for the evening. The rest of us are FemBots programmed by Matt to infuse some chick sensibilities into the site, i.e., pregnancy, knitting and shoe references. But Matt did it well. It's only occasionally that one of us FemBots has a breakdown. It's only occasionally that one of us FemBots has a breakdown. It's only occasionally that one of us FemBots has a breakdown. It's only occasionally that one of us FemBots has a breakdown....breakdown....breakdown....breakdown....

Well I don't know about you, but I've always had better luck with "the other kind" that's standard-issue here on MeFi, so the premise of "actual living, breathing females" doesn't hold much promise in my book, whether MeFi or MoFi. If you didn't get your standard issue "actual living, breathing female" substitute when you signed up for your MeFi account, I'd demand a refund from Matt. At once. Because you're really missing out.

I have now been to a few meetups, and seen pics of many more, and I've met a few dozen of you fine freaks, and I gotta say, never have the two main genders not been at least properly represented. Unless there have been boys-only meetups I've somehow missed (I'm a boy, I'm a boy, but my ma won't admit it), I have no idea what you-all are talking about.

Everyone's acting all cool, like, "Oh, really? I didn't see those hot chicks over in the corner there," but like a 7th grade dance, no one's really not noticing.

You'll have to take me on faith (although this meetup is definitaly evidence), but just because the last SF and LA Mefi Meetups were almost all boys doesn't mean squat. (And I know it's not Mefi, it's Mofi, but, um... so what? They're as smart and schwingy as many in here.)

Also, it's good to finally place a face on The Wendell In My Mind.

We are all Renee.

Well, I’m not, but I still have all the email she sent me.

I’ve been to meetups in 3 of the 5 major West coast metro areas, and except for one where someone’s girlfriend was in town, I've been the only woman at all of them. I have to go to New York to see MeFi women in the flesh! (I definitely felt lots of love there. I guess you East Coast boys really dig a nice tan and smooth, motionless features.)

I have sent to LA for reinforcements for the next SF meetup, although I still cherish hopes of seeing a few of the local SF girls who outed themselves to me in email. Otherwise I'm going to have to expand my recruiting effort. Or just up and move to New York.

I don't doubt it, naxosaxur. But it's something languagehat said of himself:
having been a college student in the late '60s-early '70s, I often feel like a superannuated Regency buck, peering around at all the prim young Victorians and trying to remember not to say 'leg.'
I was just trying to gain acceptance through the use of humor. *sniff*

The Wendell in My Mind
Didn't Clint Holmes do that song in '73?

When this old world gets me down
And there's no love to be found
I close my eyes and soon I find
There's a Wendell in my mind
While the MeFites laugh
And the MoFites play
And we sing a song all day

My name is Wendell,
I've got a nickel,
I've got a nickel shiny and new
I'm gonna buy me a MeFi Gold Membership,
that's what I'm gonna do

In the wonders that I find
With the Wendell in my mind
In a Web that used to be,
Click the links and follow me
Where the asshats laugh
And the fuckwits play
And we'll sing a song all day

My name is mathowie,
I think I'm married
I'm gonna have a baby or two
We're gonna let them
Visit the Filters,
That's what we're gonna do...
