Anyone here from Alabama?

I don't actually live in Alabama, but I was sort of curious if anyone else did.

alabama, where the sheep are wary.

When does the killing start?

You could temporarily change your user ID page zip code to zips in Alabama, if you were really curious.

Good point, interrobang! Thanks a ton!

Yeah, what do you want?

How is it down there this time of year? Is it cold?
posted by Ryvar at 7:07 PM on December 3, 2004

It's a bit nippy. I just took the trash out and I'd say it was about 55 degrees. Is that all?
posted by Stan Chin at 7:09 PM on December 3, 2004

Yes, just while you're here... are you wearing pants?
posted by idest at 7:11 PM on December 3, 2004

Bugle Boy Jeans.

Stan Chin: Cool, cool. Hmm . . . oh! Oh! Um, I really like hot wings, so I've always kind of wondered - is the sauce used for hot wings down south better than what we get up here in the permafrost of Boston? The south, in my mind, has this reputation for amazing hot sauce, see . . . if you've never been up north and tasted our hot sauce/wings, then I apologize for bothering you.
posted by Ryvar at 7:17 PM on December 3, 2004

Well, we're not really into hot wings. We take pride in our barbeque. Here in Alabama, I would say our hot wings are hotter, while less tasty than those in Boston.
posted by Stan Chin at 7:21 PM on December 3, 2004

How would you compare your wings with Buffalo's?
posted by Evstar at 7:22 PM on December 3, 2004

Never had them.
posted by Stan Chin at 7:23 PM on December 3, 2004

And what do you think of baked beans?
posted by idest at 7:25 PM on December 3, 2004

Depends on where you get them. Dreamland barbeque, while usually known for just serving ribs and white bread, started serving sides. I would have to say I enjoy their baked beans.
posted by Stan Chin at 7:27 PM on December 3, 2004

But is the cole slaw all vinegary? I don't like cole slaw if its too vinegary.
posted by yhbc at 7:30 PM on December 3, 2004

No, not much vinegar in most of the cole slaw here. There's a slight hint of it. Although our slaw tends to be runnier.
posted by Stan Chin at 7:31 PM on December 3, 2004

Evstar: I can certainly say the the flavor of the sauce on good wings in New England / the Albany area is markedly fuller in body and richness than that of the sauce on wings I've sampled in Buffalo (which are highly overrated in general, in my opinion).

Stan Chin: thanks, I appreciate your insight. That's pretty much all I wanted to know.

Ryv, I live in alabama, but I'm not FROM here...

Esme: I know, I know - my sympathies on your situation. How are the hotwings, though?
posted by Ryvar at 8:17 PM on December 3, 2004

IF I make them they're good, otherwise bland...

Hey, someone get Chris to open up port 6668 so I can get back into #mefi, Please?
posted by kamylyon at 8:18 PM on December 3, 2004

Why can't you use port 6667?
posted by Pretty_Generic at 8:23 PM on December 3, 2004

my ISP has it blocked for some unghodly reason - no, they won't unblock it, I've tried
posted by kamylyon at 8:39 PM on December 3, 2004

For you!
posted by Pretty_Generic at 8:47 PM on December 3, 2004

tried that, didn't work for me :(

I'll try again...

I use to love dreamland, but I recently ate at greentop and it was even better. Dreamland ice tea is the better of the two. I like them both though.

And it's butt cold here tonight.

still not working...

Where's dreamland located? I'm near Troy...
posted by kamylyon at 9:04 PM on December 3, 2004

Esme: WTF?! You say you talked to them and they won't unblock it? Port 6667 is the default IRC port for every bloody last chat server on the entire goddamn Internet. There's no way any even modestly-sized ISP would ever block it unless they were directly experiencing some kind of IRC-related DDoS attack, and then only temporarily.
posted by Ryvar at 12:17 AM on December 4, 2004

You know, there's like a bazillion newbies who won't get the rinoy of this and will assume because they see this kind of chattiness all the time that it's okay to post meta threads like this.

...and then Miguel will come back, there'll be lots of "oh, I'm about to eat dinner" posts, and we won't get to see the traditional snarkfests, callouts, and flameouts which are the real draw of MeTa. What fun will that be, I ask?

I went to a series of bars in Muscle Shoals one night celebrating a good friend's bachelor party the night before his wedding. Every goddam bar played "Sweet Home Alabama". It started to really get on my nerves. So fuck Alabama.

Also, I have a friend who now lives in Birmingham. And you know what? Birmingham is a pretty big city. And you never hear anything about it. It's like Sacramento. It must be really boring.

It's 33F here in Albuquerque and the snow we had Monday has finally completely melted off. Oh, look, my cat threw up.

Yes, but, HOW ARE THE HOT WINGS?
posted by Ryvar at 12:24 AM on December 4, 2004

As a matter of fact, I'm from Alabama. Montgomery, to be precise. Pleased to make your acquaintance.
posted by Clay201 at 1:04 AM on December 4, 2004

Hey, good to meet you, Clay201. So, in your opinion, how are the hotwings down there?
posted by Ryvar at 1:13 AM on December 4, 2004

I'm afraid I don't eat hotwings, Ryvar. But I'll ask around. I'm sure I know someone who swings that way.

Is everyone else from New York?

posted by Ethereal Bligh at 5:21 AM on December 4, 2004

I'm in Montgomery (Alabama) also (another transplant, but after 15 years might as well call it home) and also avoid the hot wings. But we have the most excellent Thai I have ever eaten.
posted by spartacusroosevelt at 5:22 AM on December 4, 2004

I have no idea Ryv, all I know is, it's the only port that doesn't work for me.

SpartacusRoosevelt; Howdy neighbor. Re: the Thai food... I'm assuming you mean Lek's? They do kick ass, don't they?

kamylyon; Howdy neighbor. There's a Dreamland BBQ here in Montgomery, but I'm rather partial to Country's because they have this incredible mustard based sauce that us low carbohydrate people can deal with. (They have the other kind as well, of course).

Is being from Alabama like being from Germany post WWII, where you have to reconcile with the past of your homeland?
posted by orange clock at 9:53 AM on December 4, 2004

To a degree, orange clock. You mainly spend time butting your head against a wall of people who never let the past go away.

Clay, actually I was speaking of AlaThai, (now delivering to Cloverdale). The TomKha is my answer to the question "If you could only eat one food the rest of your life...."
posted by spartacusroosevelt at 11:19 AM on December 4, 2004

technically, my mom's side of the family is from alabama, and so i've been there a million times.

i think that's where the drinky drinky parts of me come from, and that's also why i love domestic beer.

i love visiting alabama -- you got all that southern hospitality (which basically means everyone waits for you to leave before talking shit about you) and the BBQ, and some goddamned kickass fireworks.

the bugs suck though.
posted by fishfucker at 12:06 PM on December 4, 2004

Clay: Yeah, the mustard sauce kicks ass, we have a Country's in Troy.

Is it time (Finally) for a 'Bama meetup?

ff: yes, most of the bugs DO suck

Wow, the USA got a lot smaller since the last time I looked at a map.

Back in the states, I live six miles from the Alabama state line. So...ALMOST.
posted by fricative at 7:24 PM on December 4, 2004

Spartacus: As it happens, I just noticed AlaThai for the first time this evening as I was driving through the Wal-Mart parking lot there on the Atl Highway. I immediately thought of your post.

orange clock: The short answer is 'hell yes.' You remember Byron De La Beckwith, the real life racist and murderer played by James Woods in Ghosts of Mississippi? I'm related to him, although not by blood. And remember George C. Wallace? My mother worked on his first presidential campaign. Oh, and he hit on her. So yeah, there are definitely some amends to be made.

kamylyon: I'm up for a meet up. Just let me know when and where.

I'll be up in M'ngmry on Monday, how about lunch?

My wife use to serve tables at that place. Um, don't eat there.

justgary: I've worked in lots of restaurants, most of which I'd NEVER eat in...

But some I would.
