Photos of last night's San Francisco meetup.
posted by DaShiv to MetaFilter Gatherings at 8:49 AM (36 comments total)

In attendance were: caitlinb, bendy, quasistoic, DaShiv, eipmorph, obloquy, metaculpa, and Aster.

A special commendation goes to epimorph for wielding a camera of with such impressive masculine vigor that merely by aiming the camera toward nearby strangers at the bar was he able to convince two young ladies to strike a few poses for him and to come over to our table later on to pose for a shoutout or two (the evidence is on either caitlinb or quasistoic's camera). If you ever need to borrow my camera again, you have my blessings.

Thanks to caitlinb, as usual, for the planning and the reminders. The Traveling Shoutout Circus will be making its next stop in Berkeley at the end of the month.

That caitlinb? HOT!

Aw. You all look so fresh and clean and innocent... Not at all my idea of what a MetaFiterian looks like.

Those are awesome. 'Tis a shame you didn't get your Guinness though.

That quasistoic? HOTTER!

Oh you sexy people. I'm sad I missed you. I actually got out of work really early and didn't have the energy to hang around till 7. I hope some of you make it out to Berkeley on the 29th.

It's that California sunshine and health food. A week in NYC and they'd look more dissolute than Lou Reed in an opium den on Halloween.

California sunshine? I've almost forgotten what that is.

Sorry. Had to work.

I'm sorry I had to miss this meetup, I was really looking forward to it but I had to cancel my plans. I'll probably miss the next one too. Hopefully you've all had so much fun that this will become a regular occurance and I can eventually get there.

I would have liked to make this too but out-of-town friends showed up with their pre-made plans.
posted by vacapinta at 1:41 PM on January 15, 2005

Damn out-of-town friends with their pre-made plans! Depriving us of you AND Don Juan du Mer.

Taz, someone once told me I had "the fresh-scrubbed healthy look of the outdoorsy vegan." All I can say is, stereotypes about vegans sure have changed since I was a kid.

Next SF Meetup: Feb 11 in an early observance of Valentine's Day. Be there, or show up at the St Patrick's Day meetup instead.

Confidential to Danelope: My acting is really improving, isn't it!

Hopefully you've all had so much fun ....

Oh, indeed. Thanks again to the fresh-scrubbed vegan for her awe-inspiring organizational powers. And to quasi for the smelly markers.

Where are your damn pictures, quasi? As the record stands now, I'm pwning you with no justification whatsoever. Show the world the truth, my man. Also, if it's any consolation on the guineess - I got your guiness instead of the deuce I ordered. A definite upgrade, as it turns out.
posted by metaculpa at 2:49 PM on January 15, 2005

no shoutouts to us (or me) ???

looks like you guys had fun, and i'm not sure about the fresh-faced, well-scrubbed thing--i think the restaurant had good lighting. ; >
posted by amberglow at 3:09 PM on January 15, 2005

It's not so much that y'all look so fresh-scrubbed and pretty (though by god you do) as that the place looks kind of nice.

We New Yorkers have spasms of pretty ourselves, but it seems we have a low opinion of what we can handle decor-wise. That place looks downright classy in comparison.

Concerning caitlinb's blossoming acting career, maybe I speak for us all:

We laughed. We cried. It was better than Cats.

Juilliard would shutter their doors in defeat if ever they saw you perform.

Ha-HAH! It was horridly dark in that back room, and only some tricky available darkness work made the lighting look as "nice" as a couple of you mentioned. For the photo buffs out there, my EXIF shows that this shot was taken at ISO 3200, 1/13s at f/1.4. As a comparison, that would be over a minute-long exposure at ISO 100 with your typical f/5.6 zoom lens. The EV was over 16 stops lower than Sunny 16 (i.e. over sixty-five thousand times dimmer than on a sunny day outside).

These weren't the greatest photos on the whole, but frankly I'm surprised that this many of them came out at all, since most were ruined by either motion blur (both subject and camera) and/or focusing mishaps. Did you wonder why the glow off of the relatively small LCD on caitlinb's Sidekick was strong enough to bathe everyone nearby with purple light? It was because there was hardly any other light in the room--that is to say, the lighting in the photos was reasonably soft and even because our room was pretty evenly unlit. It didn't help that they had shut off the lights in the back room completely at some point after we had settled in there, but luckily we were near the doorway so we had some of the light from the main room spilling in (much of it indirectly via reflection off the walls).

As a reference, this view from the outside? That's the "bright" main room of the bar. :) And it took a good bit of dodging on the right side of this shot to make the details on the posters visible and to brighten both me and the wall compared to the background. A lot of Photoshop work went into making these results even somewhat presentable.

What could actually be seen of the decor was nice though. :)

amberglow: I just grabbed candids and let the other cameras handle the shoutouts for the most part, so the shoutouts should (in theory) be forthcoming. quasistoic had to work today.

Well, I would have been the first person to post my pictures to MeTa last night, as I uploaded them to Flickr at 12:38am, but for some reason I was unable to start a new thread in MeTa, and I didn't want to bury them in the old thread.

So, for the record, here are my pictures from last night. (Note the "uploaded at" time)

Special thanks to caitlinb for the organization. The Toronado was a great place to meet, and I think everyone there had a great time.
posted by quasistoic at 6:32 PM on January 15, 2005

I think at some point we decided to just shoutout to ourselves. The pictures are great, DaShiv and quasi, and definitely capture the hilarity going on there. Matt's rodeo champion disguise is outstanding.

Did someone actually write "Mathowie's baby" in the bathroom? Markers and beer: recipe for vandalism.

And thanks caitlinb for organizing - I'm looking forward to the next one already.

DaShiv, you're giving away all my secrets... I'm gonna have to have a little talk with you.

Thanks, caitlinb!

Feb. 11 in Berkeley? I'm actually going to be in town for that one! LA meets SF again! I can hardly wait.
posted by bedhead at 12:17 PM on January 16, 2005

Jan 29th in Berkeley, Feb 11th in San Francisco. But hopefully SF is close enough! I am thinking Treat Street. It's BARTable AND it will correct chicobangs's little misunderstanding about how classy we are.
posted by caitlinb at 12:35 PM on January 16, 2005

If it's in SF, even better. Can I bring the same hot date I brought last time? I'll be staying at his place that night, I think.
posted by bedhead at 12:42 PM on January 16, 2005

Yes, he is completely welcome! And if he emails me or quasistoic, we'll make sure he gets invited to all of them. (Other reminder-desiring persons are welcome to email, too.)
posted by caitlinb at 1:06 PM on January 16, 2005

Lord, no. Not Treat Street. I might run into my crazy ex-roommates there. I threaten boycott.

As long as it's somewhere else, I would be glad to help organize/coordinate.
posted by quasistoic at 1:32 PM on January 16, 2005

How about the Odeon? There's a couch area in the front, and you can bring in burritos if you're so inclined. If there's entertainment that night, it's probably something like porn-a-oke or (checking calendar) a stoned spelling bee.

If that's too bizarre, something like the Latin American Club or the Attic are good drinking spots and will also dispel any accusations of classiness.
posted by bendy at 2:16 PM on January 16, 2005

I like the Odeon, although it's not BARTable, and I like El Rio, too, although it's probably nicer in warmer weather. Latin American Club is across the street from Esperpento - for those who are unafraid of garlic (tables outside, too - again for a warmer time).

I luv Treat Street, quasi, so let us know when you're going to be out of town or something anyway so we can meet there then.
posted by caitlinb at 4:03 PM on January 16, 2005

In connection with a recent FPP about Rubberboy, I saw the Odeon's traveling show in Seattle last year. Just sayin.
