How are metafilter .org and .com different? January 17, 2005 3:16 PM Subscribe
Is there some significance or explanation to the finding that metafilter.org looks like mf.com, except for the fact that I can't log in to .com and I can to .org?
Part of the reason I asked is that for two months, since joining, I have tried in vain to log in to Metafilter.org, which was what my bookmark pointed to, and I accidentally went to the .com site and had no problem. I admit I'm not always very savvy with these things.

MetaFilter.org and MetaFilter.net are domains mathowie registered to ensure that no one else snagged 'em. The site is MetaFilter.com everything else just points to it. I would suggest updating your bookmarks and forgetting about MetaFilter.org

Metafilter.org probably attempts to write a cookie for the domain "metafilter.com" and can't due to your browser configuration. And even if it could, metafilter.org certainly can't access a cookie written by metafilter.com as a security precaution. Otherwise, every site on the Internet could access every cookie stored by your browser, and life would be a nightmarish vision of horror.

Sorry to bitch, but you couldn't be bothered to type "metafilter.com" when you asked the question?
Since "mf.com" pops up a security warning in my browser, I assume it doesn't have anything to do with Metafilter.

I can access metafilter.org from my work site (can't log in though) but metafilter.com is blocked. Go figure.

fixedgear that's pretty coomon. If metafilter.org stops working try prepending anything like GetBentYouStupidWorkFilter.metafilter.org as some of the filtering software is very litteral and will only block www.metafilter.com and matts coded unrecognised machine names to return the front page.

Mitheral: I will try that, never occurred to me. Lately it has been returning "File Type is Restricted Chat Forum" where it used to just display a stop sign.

You are not logged in, either login or create an account to post comments
.com works as far as comments and logins
.org does not.
