World of Warfare Guild? February 13, 2005 12:07 AM   Subscribe

A MetaFilter WoW guild?
posted by Ethereal Bligh to MetaFilter Gatherings at 12:07 AM (68 comments total)

At the risk of irritating the “does this belong on MeTa?” crowd, I'm posting this because:
  • World of Warcraft is, like, the most popular MMORPG evAr!
  • I like to play, but I'm not very gregarious so playing with people I know from mefi would be really cool. I'm sure other people are similarly inclined.
  • But we'd need to be on the same server, which requires some coordination and, admittedly, is a pain.
I know this was posted here back in November when the game first shipped; but I'm thinking more people are surely playing it now (although it's sold out everywhere, apparently). And, again, we mefites that are playing are all scattered across various servers and so some organization would be necessary for us to play together. (Casual mentions don't really accomplish much.)
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 12:08 AM on February 13, 2005

I'd join it.

Currently, I'm playing Horde on Mal'Ganis (a PVP server), and I'm not connected with any guild. However, my character is low level, so starting over wouldn't be an issue if it comes to that. I'd like to stay Horde, though, if possible.

Playing with other MeFites would be fun. This is a good suggestion!

It's a shame that the Europeans and Koreans are on different sets of servers than the N. Americans. Given that MeFi is, relatively speaking, so global.

To maybe get the ball rolling, to make available something concrete those interested can do, I think I'm going to pick a medium population (N.A.) server and create a new character, then I'll report the server and character back here. Then anyone interested can also create a character on that server and email mine (or post here). I'll go do that now...
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 3:21 AM on February 13, 2005

Okay, I selected Shadowsong as the medium population server. It's a "normal", meaning PvE primary, server. I created a character, Thereal, who is a human female priest as a primary healer, in the interests of hoping to user her for group play.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 4:34 AM on February 13, 2005

Another vote for Horde please.

gah! human?!!
posted by Stynxno at 4:40 AM on February 13, 2005

I've read that Europe and North America will eventually be able to play on each others' servers. Not sure if or when that'll happen, though. And that sucks, because I'm hopping on the European release, and I'd really like to have someone to start off with.

Any European WoWers out there?
posted by ruddhist at 4:41 AM on February 13, 2005

I created a human Paladin named Catir on Shadowsong so I could play along.
posted by headspace at 4:47 AM on February 13, 2005

"Another vote for Horde please."

Well, supposedly Alliance is much more popular than Horde and so an Alliance guild should be attractive to the most mefites. Is what I was thinking.

"gah! human?!!"

I was expecting that any mefites could create any Alliance character and we'd be able to play together and form a guild. I wanted to do a priest for grouping purposes, and, for now, I figured a night elf would be trouble being that they start on another continent.

"I created a human Paladin named Catir on Shadowsong so I could play along."

Stynxno, will you indulge us and start a character on Shadowsong, too?

Headspace, could you in-game email (I've never actually done this, so if I'm misunderstanding something, let me know) "Thereal" so we can keep track of each other? I can add your character to my "friends" list.

"I've read that Europe and North America will eventually be able to play on each others' servers."

That would be very cool, as I'd love to play with you and all our European sistren and brothren.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 4:51 AM on February 13, 2005

Ooh, I started playing on Friday (the European launch) and I was hoping something like this would show up - I'd love to go adventuring with fellow Mefites. For the record, my (lowly level 9) undead warrior-girl is called Terpsichoria and resides on the European Earthen Ring RP server (partially due to roleplay servers filtering out the leet-kids to some extent, and because a couple of forums i post to have their guilds on there). Feel free to mail me/shout at me/find me and attempt to hack my legs off, Euro-WoWers.
posted by terpsichoria at 5:30 AM on February 13, 2005

I'd join in as well. I've already got lowbies distributed amongst Shadow Moon (PVP) and Eonar (PVE), but it couldn't hurt to have more.
posted by still at 7:58 AM on February 13, 2005

I already have a horde character, and a guild with friends of mine on Gorefeind, so an Alliance character would be great. I will make one and join you on Shadowsong.

If other MeFites wanted to play a horde server on Shadowsong, we could have a little healthy competition of good vs. evil..

evil always wins, because good is dumb.
posted by getupandgo at 8:08 AM on February 13, 2005

If you're on Justice in CoH, drop me a line. Or I could start a new toon elsewhere, I reckon.
posted by robocop is bleeding at 8:14 AM on February 13, 2005

I just went to log in, and realized that Shadowsong is a normal server. could we do something on player vs. player (PvP)?
posted by getupandgo at 8:16 AM on February 13, 2005

I'm going to form an undead warrior on Shadowsong :) (named stynxno of course).

I might make an alliance character at a later date. We shall see.
posted by Stynxno at 8:18 AM on February 13, 2005

So, do we want two different guilds then?

I'll make an Alliance and Horde character on Shadowsong until we get this sorted out; I wouldn't mind playing Alliance if this is the only way to get a guild going.

(in the meantime, you PVPers can hunt down my Undead Rogue, Prosthetic, on Mal'Ganis)
posted by spinifex23 at 9:14 AM on February 13, 2005

i'd hit it
posted by Hands of Manos at 9:20 AM on February 13, 2005

OK - Gnome Rogue created on Shadowsong.

Name: Beehive, after her stylin' '50's hairdo.

(I also made a Horde char; another Undead Rogue named Prosthetic, but I'd rather play in a MeFi guild and Alliance than solo and Horde.)
posted by spinifex23 at 9:27 AM on February 13, 2005

ok, I cave, Shadowsong it is.
posted by getupandgo at 10:54 AM on February 13, 2005

Okay, Dwarven Priest on Shadowsong ... named Fatherwolf natch.
posted by WolfDaddy at 10:57 AM on February 13, 2005

I do hope someone will start a post about a mefi scrapbooking club soon.
posted by crunchland at 11:15 AM on February 13, 2005

I'd definitely be interested. I vote for Horde and a CENTRAL server, which would provide the best lag-free play and time zone availability for the most people.
posted by travis vocino at 12:56 PM on February 13, 2005

I'm up for it. Paladin named Zonker (surprisingly enough) on Shadowsong.

Damn it.. Anyway to get a character moved from one realm to another????? I'd join in a sec if I could bring my existing character
posted by John Kenneth Fisher at 4:09 PM on February 13, 2005

I don't think so.

However, the vast majority of us will be starting with new characters, so we'll all be on equal footing. If that helps at all.
posted by spinifex23 at 4:55 PM on February 13, 2005

I wish I had checked for the location of servers. But I'm not sure that it will make a big difference.

Gosh, we're getting close to having enough people to make an Alliance MeFi guild on Shadowsong. I've not done this before. Are there level requirements?
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 5:24 PM on February 13, 2005

There are no level requirements, EB, but you need to pony up 1g to register the charter and 10g to make a tabard. Then another 1g to buy a tabard so we can all look alike.
posted by WolfDaddy at 7:39 PM on February 13, 2005

I play alliance on Kel'Thuzzad (PvP) and am quite invested in my characters and my guild. If anyone plays on that server, feel free to search for "zealeus" to find any of my alts if I'm online.
At the moment, I'm going to stick to my realm but if I ever start a Horde character, I'll be sure to join up with you all.
BTW, on most realms, Alliance outnumber Horde 3:1 so expect massive ganking for the Hordies if PvP. Also, Priests are generally in very short supply for Hordies so create one if you want no problem teaming up =)
posted by jmd82 at 10:19 PM on February 13, 2005

Spinifex23 and getupandgo: did you create Alliance chars on Shadowsong? I ingame mailed the other people who've named there characters here. I've got the guild charter, but need the signatures.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 4:10 AM on February 14, 2005 need to pony up 1g to register the charter...

I believe the charters are only 10s.
posted by travis vocino at 5:22 AM on February 14, 2005

Sounds good so far. I can contribute a few silvers to the cost of the charter when I'm next online. Do we have a name for the guild?
posted by Zonker at 6:00 AM on February 14, 2005

I've already bought the charter (it was 10s). I just need to get together with people to get their signatures. Which might be a little difficult to arrange. I'm going to be playing this morning for a while, but on a different server. But let's say that at exactly 9:00 CST I'll check in on Shadowsong.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 7:29 AM on February 14, 2005

Holy crap, I'm already ON Shadowsong. And here I was cringing when I saw the thread, assuming I would be on the wrong server...I'd be totally happy to help out anyone in some power questing or what have you.

I have about 3 gold I can lend to guild-related miscellany; I just need to bow out of the guild I got invited to yesterday.

Character name is Coretti (lv 23 human rogue), please dump me on your friends list, Ethereal, and ping me if I login tonight, probably around 10 PM EST.
posted by Remy at 7:41 AM on February 14, 2005

well, i just checked out which has census reports on how many players are on each server, what the player types are, etc. I just checked out Shadowsong, and the horde is outnumber 5:1.

I come from Stromrage (54 Tauren Hunter w000!) which has double the population of Shadowsong and where the Alliance / Horde ratio is "only" 3:1. The problem with higher ratios means that the lag in cities is proportional to that ratio. So the lag in Org is 5 times less than in Ironforge. And since my computer can barely handle Org lag during peak times, I doubt I could handle IF lag.

So I'm going to stick with the horde. Besides the technical issues, I like playing on the side of the underdogs (and I like being on the side of "good" - the alliance are the biggest pricks in the whole history of warcraft - too bad the developers only focused on the alliance and left the Horde half finished...). So if anyone wants to form a Horde guild on Shadowsong, email me or shoot me an IM in AIM (email is in the profile). Otherwise I'll just stick to Stormrage.

Got headspace's and spinifex23's characters signed up. Only eight more to go!
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 8:44 AM on February 14, 2005

My primary characters are all in a guild on blackhand, but I don't mind starting another one. I'll try to remember after the boy goes to sleep, and I'll send Thereal a mail with my new MeFi character. ;) Since we're going Alliance, I'll probably start a pally, since my main character is a rogue, the pally will be something different. :)
posted by dejah420 at 9:55 AM on February 14, 2005

I'm totally in, and I'm sure if I ask MsVader, she'd be, too. Only one problem, though: We're "saving" the alliance stuff for when our friends join in May. (Don't ask.) Maybe we'll just make guys to join the guild, but then we'll be inactive until May, if that's allright. Damn, you'll all be so far ahead of us....

And if any PvPers on Lightning's Blade was to GET IT ON, look for any of my three Horde characters. (Grolsch, Pabst, or Tequiza)
posted by emptybowl at 12:01 PM on February 14, 2005

My characters are all on Windrunner. But I'll create an alt on Shadowsong tonight. I'd very much be game for an all-mefi guild.

Do we need to be in the same game location to sign the charter, or can it be done through messaging / mail?
posted by Zonker at 5:42 PM on February 14, 2005

It appears that we need to be in the same game location. Which is a drag. What would be a good time for everyone?
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 10:46 PM on February 14, 2005

Name the time and location and two of us can be there pretty much any time between 4pm and 9pm PST. Normy and I each created humans (rogue and mage) but haven't done much leveling with them so it's no hardship to create different races if need be.
posted by NsJen at 6:22 AM on February 15, 2005

I can be there any time after 9 PM EST, and am pretty reliably online then anyhow.
posted by Remy at 7:05 AM on February 15, 2005

Is there still a possibility of a Horde guild on Shadowsong? As emptybowl said above, we're not planning to play Alliance until May, but we're already playing Horde now. I'd love to meet up with fellow Horde players to rock some instances and trade goods and such.

Come on - you know you want a Horde guild too. Then we can have some hot Mefite (Horde) on Mefite (Alliance) action...

(on preview - think I could've said Horde a few more times? FOR THE HORDE!)
posted by MsVader at 10:00 AM on February 15, 2005

Charter Signing: Barring unforseen difficulties, I'll ("Thereal") be online tonight (Tue 15th) at 8:00 PM MST. I can't remember where I was when I logged out, but I'll probably be in Stormwind or Goldshire.

Horde: I can create a Horde character in the interests of getting a Horde Mefi Guild going; as I'm sure others can, too. Stynxno, do you want to charter the Horde guild? Or MsVader? Someone? I'm sorry that it didn't occur to me to chose something other than "Mefites" for the Alliance guild: I stupidly didn't consider the naming of a Horde MeFi Guild.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 11:49 AM on February 15, 2005

EB: I'll do the horde guild :)

I've created an undead warrior (currently level 6) named "Stynxno". I'll raise some cash and get a charter.

Send me an ingame email. We'll need 10 signatures so we'll need more characters :)

And for a guild name, I don't know. Any suggestions?
posted by Stynxno at 2:23 PM on February 15, 2005

sadly this isn't on stormrage or i could use my high level hunter to harvest good equipment for guildmates ;)
posted by Stynxno at 2:27 PM on February 15, 2005

I made both an Alliance and a Horde character. My Alliance char has signed the Alliance guild charter already, my Horde char could sign the Horde one.

If I had a choice; I'd rather play Horde. I like being on the underdog team.

I think two guilds, one for each side, is a great idea.
posted by spinifex23 at 3:19 PM on February 15, 2005

Only two more sigs to go.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 9:49 PM on February 15, 2005

I'll believe I'll be abandoning my solo character that I stupidly made on a PVP server (I'm up near 21, and it's getting really hard to solo), and making two characters, alliance and horde, on Shadowsong. I'll probably be a Gnome Warlock and a Tauren Hunter. Do we know a breakdown of our races/classes yet?

Man, sucks to be starting from scratch again, but it will be worth it to have some regulars to play with.

As for guild names, I like "Crack Horde" or "Your Mother's A Horde".
posted by emptybowl at 6:29 AM on February 16, 2005

I like 'MetaHorde' as a guild name.

Stynxno, I sent you ingame mail. My Horde char is named 'Patella'.
posted by spinifex23 at 9:16 AM on February 16, 2005

As for guild names, I like "Crack Horde" or "Your Mother's A Horde".

Heh. The problem with that is Blizzard is really trying to get guild names to be "Game Related". So guild's whose names they don't like are disbanded and the people have to reform themselves.
posted by Stynxno at 9:16 AM on February 16, 2005

Yeah, I know that Blizzard is cracking down on names they don't judge to be "Game Related", but I still think mine are funny. MetaHorde is a great suggestion, though.

What's the policy on multiple characters? I was thinking of making both a Tauren Hunter and an Undead Rogue, and if I did, I'd like them both to be in the guild, but I don't know if that's considered bad form or something. (Never been in a guild before...)
posted by emptybowl at 10:21 AM on February 16, 2005

Also, if you guys don't want to much of MeTa with stuff about this, I'm perfectly willing to set up a section on my website's forum where we can discuss WoW stuff. Do you want me to set that up?
posted by emptybowl at 10:39 AM on February 16, 2005

emptybowl: it's not bad form at all. guilds basically set their own rules. the one i'm in on Stormrage has the rule that you need to sign on at least once every 5 days or you let the leader know if you can't. Otherwise, they kick you.

Some guilds are more restrictive and demand that you play at certain times, etc.

However, to sign the "charter", you can only have one character sign it. But once the guild is formed, you can have all 8 character slots join up :)

Okay. I'll register MetaHorde tonight (7pm EST ish). If you want to sign the charter, send me an ingame mail or a tell :)
posted by Stynxno at 10:41 AM on February 16, 2005

Will either of the Meta guilds have rules? If it's going to get restrictive (like having to play x hours per week, or logging in x times per week), then I don't know if I'll commit to creating new characters. I have other in-game commitments with folks outside Mefi, and do need to have a life outside of the game, so the more restrictive the rules, the less chance I'll be able to meet them.
posted by MsVader at 11:25 AM on February 16, 2005

Okay, I've set up a WoW MeFi Guild forum over on my site . In order to see the forum though (I wanted to shield it from any other person viewing the site), you'll have to register, and then send me an email (joe at emptybowl dot com) with your username and I'll update your forum permissions. (I wish there was an easier way to do it, but if we want to keep the forum private, it's the only way.)
posted by emptybowl at 11:40 AM on February 16, 2005

MetaHorde will have one rule: Don't be a jerk.

We as a guild can define what "jerk" means (ie. loot whoring, etc).
posted by Stynxno at 3:03 PM on February 16, 2005

I am just flattered that you all have chosen 'MetaHorde' as the Horde guild name.

ps - sorry Alliance for defecting, but playing an evil undead underdog is just much more fun!

Stynxno - I'll be on tonight and will be able to sign the charter, if you're around. I hope you guys aren't too far ahead of me, and I'll be able to catch up.

The forum problems I mentioned last night seems to have sorted themselves out, since I haven't done anything, but have stopped getting errors in NS and FF. I tracked it down to a server configuration issue, though, so maybe they fixed it over the night or something.

Not that it really matters, though, since, sadly, only one person has signed up for the forum so far. (Well, other than MsVader, but she doesn't count, since she lives with me.) If you guys don't want to use it, that's cool, just let me know. But I think it's a good off-line way to keep in touch offline, set up instance/raid runs, etc...
