A marriage of like minds - they met at a Meetup! March 11, 2005 12:50 PM   Subscribe

Anybody else have something fun or strange or lifechanging happen to them as the result of a MeFi meetup? Under "all of the above," for example, the ultimate outcome of this meetup for me was my engagement to NortonDC last weekend! So, thanks, Metafilter. You rock.

Congratulations! People who are recently engaged are so cute!

You are obligated to have a "metafilter theme" at your wedding, and to call your first child either "mathowie", "jrun", or "login"...or "jessamyn" if it's a girl. Seriously, that's really cool. Best wishes, and i hope you raise a clan of internet nerdlings.

But, Toot! Toot!

Great news. I think a lot of people have formed friendships with folks that would have otherwise been strangers, so that in my mind the best thing about meetups.

I'm always amazed at the diversity of people's jobs. Everyone knows mine, but I guess I assume everyone else does web junk when I read them here, and then it turns out they're bakers, candle stick makers and whatnot.

Hey folks, thanks for the good wishes! Watch for the drunken shout outs from the reception!

Hmm, I guess it'll be another meetup no matter how you slice it. More so if MrMoonPie ends up officiating!

Congratulations! Remember to have the bridesmaids hop around with pancakes on their heads.

NortonDC, I just looked at your puppy photos. I may have hurt myself laughing. Despite my pain, I want to wish the two of you a very happy life.

Points at sweaty, manly brow and waggles unusually large and virile frontal lobe at scody. Waits.

Well crap. This beats my story of deciding to go spend a week in a desert in the middle of nowhere at Burning Man with someone after just meeting him for the first time at a meetup. I guess I'm forced to concede that a lifetime of marital bliss trumps that. My begrudging congrats.

:)

I'm tempted to order that shirt to keep for future pregnancy. It's just that awesome.

And congratulations!

The pregnancy shirt is hysterical. I sat here cracking up laughing and clapping my hands for a solid minute.

Now, I need a hot erudite guy to give me a reason to buy and wear that shirt. I wish it came in orange though:-)
posted by orange swan at 6:35 AM on March 12, 2005

Well, referring to yourself as a potential pregnancy is a great way of scaring many of them off. :)

Unless you're using it as a litmus test to find like-minded men, of course...
posted by DaShiv at 6:53 AM on March 12, 2005

andrew, that's some strange streetart I found last summer. :) Cute isn't it?

Oops, you're probably right, DaShiv. I guess I was a little too focused on getting to wear that shirt. Perhaps I should just order the baby doll style MeFi shirt and keep mum [heh!] about my ambition of getting to someday wear the other one.
posted by orange swan at 8:11 AM on March 12, 2005

I totally would get that [more inside] pregnancy shirt, but the size chart says:

Women's Junior Apparel (Jr. Ringer T-Shirt, Jr. Baby Doll T-shirt, Jr. Spaghetti Tank, Jr. Raglan, Jr. Hoodie and Camisole): These items are designed to fit juniors. They fit snug and sizes run small.

At 7 1/2 months, that does not sound like it's going to fit, even in XL. =/

Oh, and congrats to onlyconnect and NortonDC! I haven't had anything like that happen out of a MeFi meetup, but that's because I already met my husband through arranging the first big Fark party back in 2001. So a similar thing, just not MeFi-related. Anyway, many happy years together for you two.

Not wanting to rain on their parade.
But to answer the question I was astounded by the social ineptitude of those at the only meetup I will ever attend.
Maybe I left too early.

Filmgoerjuan, I am no end impressed that you just happened to know the term for a baby swan!

But you might not get your ransom. I can always register the user name "Peaches Cygnet" for my hypothetical critter:-)

But this raises the question - what use do I have for the shirt when I only need to lay an egg?

I'm inclined to think you just had plain bad luck, Johnny7. I've met quite a few MeFites now and they were all pleasant and pretty much all highly evolved.
