Y'know, this would never have happened if you ran MeFi on a Vic 20.

If you moved Metafilter onto a Mac mini stability would greatly increase.

A dual-Opteron system running FreeBSD!
Actually I'm not sure that any computer recommendation would help, as it would still have to run the dreaded Jrun...

That sucks you lost connection halfway through an SP1 install. Can you call your buddy to see if its still sitting there at the failure screen?

Dean Keaton, the servers are housed in a colocation facility somewhere in texas (I think) and yeah, even at the console, techs told me it is unresponsive.
I'm moving files to the new box now, hopefully it'll be up in a few hours ready to test.

MeFi's not in delfeugo's closet anymore? A colo in Texas isn't nearly as romantic...

As a result, I need to do a backup (I do weekly backups already), and start over with a full OS reinstall. I figured since it was drastic, I'll update the hardware as well, so I'm moving the web server to a new dual-processor machine.
So the long story short is that mefi will continue to be up and down for the next 24 hours as I migrate to a new box.
