I can't name anything specific it would accomplish, but for several months now I've been of the opinion that every single web site should use be using Dean Edwards' IE7 library (which adds a ton of CSS conformance to IE, making it even more compliant than Mozilla in many regards).

Please ignore obvious grammatical mistakes. Those will be fixed in gsteff7, but unfortunately we're still on gsteff 0.01-b1-r1.

thanks for pointing out the IE7 thing. I just tried out the png transparency thing in the MetaTalk headers but it still doesn't seem to do what firefox is capable of doing.

Two possibilities:

--> You had a Mefi Redesign contest, of which nothing visible happened. Have a CSS contest. Users get to choose among top 10 entries in 'Preferences'.

--> Just like you already allow users to change font parameters, include entries for background colors..etc

I prefer the first, though.

Agh, no, dear god no. Dean's IE7 is great, yes, yes, I agree. But if you're surfing on an old computer (my library's P2-233, for instance), the universe grinds to a halt as the Javascript decides to repaint everything. You're better off writing simple code (that IE can handle) or using CSS workarounds. I don't think there's a single IE rendering bug on MeFi that would necessitate IE7. (Okay, the PNG transperency thing that mathowie mentioned is always nice, but there's a simpler solution out there.)

If I were to have a CSS contest (Gyan, great idea), I would start by fixing up the markup to be a lot more semantic than it is right now. (That's a less good idea, because it could end up being a massive job).
