On Cooling Off MetaTalk Threads

MetaTalk threads often generate a lot of heat. I’ve seen more people button from MeTa than elsewhere on MeFi. How can we cool off threads about community concerns? [more inside]

On not repurposing abortion rights terminology

I am horrified to see, in discussions of COVID on this website, that we are okay with using the fascist co-opting of the phrase "my body my choice" in terms of anything other than abortion now. Setting aside that neither pregnancy nor abortion is contagious, that phrase means and has long meant something very specific and it should not be used to justify refusal to get vaccinated or to protect others. What does flagging as fantastic mean?

I had thought that flagging a comment as fantastic means "this is a bad comment, within the realm of fantasy, and should be removed." But I notice others apparently using this flag to mean "this is a good comment, kudos!" So which is it? And if the latter, what does flagging a comment as good accomplish?

Linking urls as links

It feels to me like I am seeing more and more urls just copy-pasted into comments, where people haven’t bothered adding them as links. It’s really easy to add a link, even when using Metafilter on a phone. On the bottom right of the input box, just click where it says “link” and copy-paste the url there in addition to in the text of the comment. Then make sure the text you want to be the clickable link is in between the tags (the two sets of angled brackets). Is there some reason people aren’t doing this? Is there a good way to encourage people to do it without berating them in threads or in a MetaTalk post like this? [more inside]

Can we stop directing threads?

I've noticed a recent trend of non-moderators directing what is okay and not okay to talk about in threads. Speaking for myself, it has restricted good faith participation and is off putting in a way that promotes a cliquish community. Especially such authoritative tone coming from a non-moderator can come off at best confusing and at worst discourage discussion, especially from users are not frequent visitors. [more inside]
