Sharing copyright infringing material on metafilter?
What is the metafilter opinion on sharing links to material that might be infringing copyright? For example, https://readcomiconline.to/
They have the complete Maus, and several books by Will Eisner among others that I'm pretty sure they don't have the rights to. Am I right about that? I can't see anything on the site that suggests the DO have the rights. I'd love to create a metafilter post sharing these, but it seems wrong, since this is essentially a pirate site, as far as I can tell?
instantly recognisable classic askme answer pirated on reddit
Looks like reddit wasn't smart from the very beginning - this famous AskMe reply was copied on reddit WTF.
Help with piracy
Is there a rule about AskMeFi questions that are explicitly asking for help pirating software? Because if not, there probably should be.
WAREZ
Copyright... we've all followed the various debates, and we know theres all kinds of morally ambiguity and grey areas and stuff involved. But where there isn’t much grey area at all are sites that are explicitly for the warezing of mass quantities of digital media. Could we not link to them or offer them our breathless support on the front page or use the site for the swapping of invites for them? Plenty of other places for that. Thanks.
Update: US jails Aussie internet pirate
As an update to this thread on the Aussie software pirate who was extradited to the US to face charges, he was sentenced to more than four years in a US jail today.
Too close to Arrrrrrr
Why is this thread still around? I know at least one admin has seen it, since my snarky response was removed. Is it now OK to ask for piracy how-to's?
Policy on piracy questions
Can I post this to askme?
I want to post a question in the green about finding mp3 copies of This American Life or someplace where folks swap CDs of programs. We're headed back to Italy in October and I'd like to load some shows on my iRiver for the long flight.
I've googled for the past half hour and I'm half-crosseyed from all the conflicting opinions I've read about the producers of the show urging folks to remove links from their websites during the "deep linking" fiasco-lite over the summer.
The upshot is this - would I be asking an illegal-activities-war3z-type question? Cause I don't want to sully my good name...

"take all copyright/theft discussions that are not on topic to METATALK, thanks"
AskMe policy on dishonestly obtaining stuff
So questions about software piracy are not allowed, but discussions about other ways of dishonestly obtaining (discounts on) goods and services are OK? Seriously, where's the distinction?
Piracy of Calvin and Hobbes.
Perhaps I'm not the model MeFi poster, and call me old-fashioned, but I find something really, truly shady about the abject, unapologetic theft of another's creativity being advocated on the Blue. Does piracy qualify as the best of the web?
LokiTorrent: should I worry?
Should I worry or not?
Given the large response to the thread about the closure of LokiTorrent and an anonymous comment in AskMeFi on the 11th I thought I'd let the good users of MeFi know about this. It came from my ISP today. I'm in London England for reference purposes. I've also removed sensitive bits. The file (movie) in question was however a 'Hollywood Blockbuster'. I got 15 mins through it and ditched it it really was S**t.
Just to let you know I have only downloaded 2 movies in 3 years, this one I consigned to the recycle bin the other I bought on DVD as it had some merit! [full email]

tsk tsk - askme and illegal activity
In this post about music downloading the subject of ask.metafilter questions being used for illegal means [+MI]
This AskMe has torrents for answers.
Is it illegal to post information here that would enable someone else to do something illegal?
Matt doesn't want it but it seems a bit harmless to me. Is it illegal to post information here that would enable someone else to do something illegal? Bearing in mind that any possible crime in this case would take place in Portugal. What could happen to Matt+MeFi if we put up enabling information here? Any lawyers?
I hear your words but they don't link what you think they link
Posts that don't actually point to their topic? The item itself is kind of interesting, but the links don't provide anything in terms of supporting the issue.
