Help finding a comment about saving characters in fanfics
I'm looking for a comment which I believe was on Metafilter (although I could be conflating it with another site) within the last couple of years. If I'm remembering it correctly, it was in a discussion about or related to fandom or fanfiction, and the comment was something like "when people put a lot of energy into saving a particular character, on some level they're putting that energy into saving themselves." This is precisely what I did, and I've wanted to refer to that comment several times, but I've never been able to find it. Does it ring a bell for anyone?
People are always saying to me, "You know, you're quite a character."
I'm looking for an old AskMetafilter question out of sheer curiosity. It was more than a year ago — someone was asking for examples of TV characters that have been on multiple TV series. The OP had some very specific criteria, which were apparently a bit hard to grasp, since almost all the answers were missing the point; the OP had to leave a comment to clarify what s/he was looking for. I don't remember exactly what the clarification was — just that it was so specific that it was surprising there were many possible correct answers (if indeed there were). [more inside]
I need [more inside] and less outside.
Can limit the main text area so that people are encouraged to put [more inside] rather than so much outside? [more inside]
Unusual Characters causing trouble with titles and tags
limited characters in tags/titles? I put some uncommon non-ASCII characters in the title of a recent post on AskMe, and the address bar and tag links are kinda busted. [more inside]
??????
Noticed that this post has what might be Unicode replacement characters instead of (presumably) Cyrillic characters in its tags. Er? [more inside]

Em dash question
Question: When I use a a character code in a post, for example, — (em dash) it turns into the character when I press "preview", if I forget to replace the actual character with it's code what appears in my comment is unpredictable.
55 characters = 55 links?
55 characters = 55 links? http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/25409
While I appreciate all the hard work that y2kcarl put into the post, I have to ask, "Are the 55 links useful to anyone?"
I thought the idea was post a link or perhaps several, to point out somethign new and allow for a bit of discussion.
Who has the time/energy to look at 55 sites? Is the post more about style than substance?
Or am I out in left field here as a link minimalist?

Special characters
I “think” spéciàl chàràctérs shöuld wörk nöw, thöugh it's pröbably töö éàrly tö sày the böxés and quéstiön marks will be göné. That'll be £5 or 1000¥ or €3.5.
Spell Check Problem
Spell check problem - if the text being checked has character entity sequences > or < when spell check completes they will be replaced in the textarea with greater-than or less-than signs. My browser is: Mozilla 1.1 -- Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826.
Characters turning into question marks.
Can any one see what is behind the box? (?)
I can't. I have tried every browser I have on two platforms, OS X and WinXP. Is this case for most people, and if so, why do people keep posting like that?
