How supportive/critical to be in MeFi Music/Projects commentary?

To be clear, I don't plan on eviscerating anyone, but I do wonder if there's an existing "if you don't have anything good to say..." status quo. I've never been active in either, and don't have a feel for it. Personally I *hate* having my work presented in an insincere critical environment, and prefer to both give and receive "something good/something bad" style comments. I'm particularly concerned about MeFi Music, because 1) I've experienced sensitivity re: my own music 2) It's music! It's arbitrary! ...but you hold back development by having people blow smoke up your soundhole.

Looking for a recent article on music criticism

The article I'm trying to recall was a very well written reflection on what the purpose of criticism is. I think the author was mainly concerned about music criticism. There was a central thread through out the story of a particular album (from the late 60s or 70s) that a friend of the author interpreted as being a nihilistic tribute to love. It was moving and I wish I had bookmarked it.

Is this a problem with FanFare?

Perhaps this is confirmation bias, but it seems to me that many FanFare threads have descended into “this show or movie is bad, and you are a bad person for watching it.” This, despite that fact that the people making these statements are clearly (hate?) watching the show or film. [more inside]

Silenced all my life - videogame reviews

In the tail end of the thread about Bioshock: Infinite and the state of games criticism, Riton and others expressed interest in a review site by Mefites. This is a MeTa to see if there's enough interest in the idea and if so, to hash out the details. [more inside]

MeFite authors meet their critics

Two articles by MeFites have been scrutinized rather closely in Metafilter threads in the last few days, and the authors of the pieces have participated in the threads: Maias's "The Link Between Adult Obesity and Childhood Trauma" and YoungAmerican's "Make Your Thing". [more inside]

rushkoff responds

In case you missed it, Douglas Rushkoff (briefly) responded to some of the nuclear criticism his opinion piece received in this thread.

If you can't be bothered to punctuate or capitalize, maybe you shouldn't post to the front page.

MeTa "review" on GreenCine

I came across the following adline on the GreenCine main page:
"The best thing in entertainment since cave paintings!" -Metatalk posting
Previously noted in passing on the green here. Google isn't helping me locate where they might have gotten this quote from any MeFi posting. Any ideas?

Enough with the complaining

Why the complaints all the time?

As is often the case, people seem to prefer pointing out errors and criticizing fpps to a discussion of the material. This was not a lazy fpp, I contend. What can be done to discourage complainers? I admit that my approach to the complaints in this thread was not ideal.

Can we open signups?

People on mefi are criticizing him and he can't respond here because he doesn't have an account.

While open season is closed, would an open-door policy for postees work?

Harsh words about MeFi from other blogs

I notice that MetaFilter has received some strong critisism over the last few days. Now while the manner of some of the critisism (in the comments at ASM and another site I won't mention) to some extent debase the point that is being made due to name calling and (dare I say it) Ad Hominem attacks on this place (what do I win for using that phrase?), in the stream of hatred, are there some underlying points that should be taken on board?

Constructive (or not?) Criticism on Metatalk

Constructive (or not?) Criticism on Metatalk
MeTalk is the place where we gripe about what we think is wrong with certain posts. So what happens when you're a little too straightforward about your opinion? Hurt feelings and accusations of flaming. Was I over the line with my comments? What can we do to ensure that posters don't take offense to criticism doled out in MeTalk? [more inside]
