Discussion of Kamala Harris’ positions on Palestine verboten?
A number of posts about the Harris campaign’s positions on the ongoing genocide in Palestine, and what steps people were or weren’t perceived to be taking in regards to that were deleted in the recent Harris campaign thread, with the mod suggestion to take it to a different, Palestine-focused thread instead. I disagree: numerous international threads have specifically requested not to be derailed by a focus on US politics, and questions about major campaign issues, even contentious ones like reproductive rights, have historically been appropriate for campaign threads. I understand there is ongoing mod decision making on this matter, but would like to seek community thoughts on this matter that might inform said decision making.
The Emotional Labor Thread shouldn't be the exception
Let’s talk about expanding our ideas of boyzone-type derailing and how to be the best Metafilter we can be. [more inside]
So What Are You *Really* Trying To Say?
Responding to this FPP, KokoRyu makes a point about how there could be demographic parallels between issues in the developing world & New York City c. 1970; namely the large number of young people inhabiting both: "Just as the New York of the 60's and 70's was a violent place because of demographics, the same may be true of the world, with it's young, growing population today." deleting derails & off-topic comments
I was under the impression that derailing & off-topic comments (especially at the beginning of a thread) were going to be automatically deleted more often now that mod staffing is decreased. Do we have a community consensus backing up that standard? [more inside]
"The left" as a monolithic entity
Recently, i've noticed a trend in several FPPs. Both the Dan Savage speech and Trader Joes threads were hit with repeated attempts to derail them into some meta-referendum on how this related to "the left" or "liberalism" as a movement. Note; i am not calling out any one person here, this is not a one person problem. [more inside]
Question on the Blue
I knew about open Snowden threads of course, but the G20 surveillance news really wasn't being discussed elsewhere. I though a new thread might spark an interesting conversation about what effects this might have on the G8 meeting. Also we'd no G8 thread. Also we hadn't discussed GCHQ. Sadly, my post did not inspire a discussion that diverged significantly from the existing threads, maybe my /. link screwed it up, not sure. Anyways, if anyone has easy tips for quieting the early thread axe grinds then I'd be interested to hear them. I suppose more links about GCHQ would've helped, but probably not much, and that's more work. Would it have been out of line for me to have simply ended the post with a question like : Do we know how this will impact the G8 meeting?

Could we not do the HOW DARE YOU BE INTERESTED IN THE SUBJECT OF THIS THREAD WHEN CHILDREN ARE STARVING WHEREVER IT IS THAT THEY ARE STARVING!!! thing, as per this thread? Cheers.
You do read digg and reddit, don't you?
Regarding the the derail in the Google Translation System post. It was proposed that - to paraphrase BeerFilter - posts which contain material from other popular websites shouldn't appear here. [more inside]
MeTa by proxy.
MeTa by proxy.
This post has attracted a lot of MetaTalk-like comments, but nobody apparently wants to pony up the effort to start a MeTa thread about it instead of posting their stuff in the FPP. So here y'all go.

Hey refugee/racist people, get your own thread
Hey refugee/racist people, get your own thread. Eight comments into it, the troll succeeds and we're no longer talking about the camps. Good work.
This is the thread for any complainers about the Mary Cary thread and the trolls that ran about it.

/ not complaining, just preventing snarks on the MeTa page. Metafilter is rated G well for the most part. *shakes fist at Mary Cary*

How are you helping when you derail a thread by questioning its validity
Heh. Step back and ask yourself: How are you helping when you derail a thread by questioning its validity inside the thread?
