The burden of honesty

I'm as upset as humanfont was over people inventing facts, then using those facts to argue from. Unfortunately, humanfont does that exact thing, again and again and again. By making these speculative inferences and then arguing vituperatively from them, humanfont is inflaming an already fraught discussion and making the conversation worse. [more inside]

Speculation in AskMe answers.

So idle speculation really is "what the green is for"? That's a surprise.

Divisive drumming humdrum: republican speculation unecessary

In a thread about "unifying humanity", the poster drops this curiously divisive little gem: Ever...wondered why virtually no republicans practice African or indigenous drumming techniques? Are hand drums, to the US far right, a spooky talesman which evokes lurid fantasies of wild satanic or Santeria (Voodoo) rituals.

Supporting evidence? Congruity with the topic? It's perplexing. Are any of us supposed to have insight into this? It just seems like a lame (and lazy) tactic for inciting a flamewar, complete with dopey stereotypes about both Republicans and Africans.

Finishing touches on....

We see so many Apple-related announcements posted to MeFi. Segway was, of course, huge...even getting its own mention on the MeFi Sidebar. And now Matt has said this:

Now that those bugs are fixed, I'm putting the finishing touches on a new feature for MetaFilter I think everyone will enjoy.

Anyone care to speculate?

RSS: next big thing, or nothing?

Recent thread on RSS was a real eye opener. The ever growing mass of great blog material to read is making it impossible to keep up. With abundant tools now available for the blog writer, more and better tools are needed for the blog reader, or one will be forever swamped. (Another good summary on how RSS can help here, another good aggregator/reader here. , don't think either were mentioned in recent thread)
