Oh, totally.

I'll be there. I've avoided washing my hair for weeks just to get ready.

/me screeds.

Can I go now?

(Sorry. That was baiting, and I shouldn't have done it.)

I vowed I would only return to Burning Man once I had the infrastructure in place to really contribute something substantial. So not this year. But someday.

/me looks forward to seeing dios in the first aid camp - dangerously dehydrated, a bad case of playa foot, a hunk of rebar embedded in him somewhere and a completely blown mind and ego, considering it takes a whole lot more than dirty hair and body paint to survive the playa.

Travel safe and have fun, burners. Be bright, piss clear.

That's OK. Maybe I'll go home, get drunk, strip naked, paint myself purple and dance on the porch in tribute ;>

I would pay good money to see that, jon.

Just take the N train to the end of the line then walk a few blocks and look up. It happens on a fairly regular basis.

(this is not true. I usually forgo the paint)

Specklet, that's why the hat is out. Performance art, jonmc be thy name.

I'd love to go to Burning Man but, as ook notes above, I'd want to go only if I could commit alot of energy to doing it right. I can't do it right, now, so I'll have to wait until every ounce of cool in it has been taken and there are corporate sponsors and an MTV satellite feed.

Oh yeah, do they have Wi-Fi yet? 'Cause I can't go if I can't check MeFi on the Wi-Fi.

Have fun, kids! Don't leave the faucet running when you leave home, like last time!

Have fun...6,000 miles and a few quid stand between my and my fourth trip but it may yet come...

(It seems that I forgot to include snark preemption when I posted this thread. Sorry about that.)

fenriq/odins, the only other time I've gone was in 2002, and someone was already providing WiFi then -- I think 2001 might have been the first year it looks like The Embassy's been providing it since '99.

If anyone's interested in stopping by, I'll be camping with Image Node at 8:30 & Esplanade, the notch cut out of Asylum on this pretty map (large gif, via boingboing).

DaShiv and I will be at Borrachos y Bicicletas in the 3:00 Plaza, commiting a lot of energy to contributing something substantial / doing it right ;)

If dios is going, I'm not going.

If dios is going, I'll eat my hat. In fact, I'll even obtain a hat expressly for that purpose.

Based on his comments in the Utah Rave Raid thread, dios is not only coming, he's bringing the black helicopters with him.

But then, to do anything less would be esquivalience.

I'll be around 3:30 and Delirium at a TBD camp name (Forbidden Fruit Bar and Nut Saak seem to be the leading contenders).

Yes, I know that's very little help, but look for a big ladybug. Ask for Buzzkill or (more effectively) Peter. I've never met another Metafilter member in person, so I'd enjoy it quite much. I'll also look for your camps, nobody and scarabic. And DaShiv of course.

Most of us are getting up there this Friday night (a camp member is volunteering with DMV) ...

I just saw the MoFi post and nearly joined to reply to scarabic, then realized "WTF am I thinking? Lemme check MeTa ..."

What's interesting is that the MoFi thread has much more bitterness. Perhaps our little group has outgrown making fun of people's life choices .... naaaah. To me, the Burning Man haters seem a lot like homophobes. They really, really, really, really wanna do it themselves (see #4 in that link) but are just too scared and then resentful of all the folks doing what they like. Just a thought ... (I think jonmc likely detests it b/c of (perceived) pretentiousness, which seems to be his pet peeve.)

On preview: it looks like Forbidden Fruit Bar is gonna win out. Look for that or "Verboten Vrucht Tapperij" (for some reason, we love the Dutch, even though I'm sure that translation blows). Hopefully we'll have enough fresh fruit ...

It's not Burning Man that is iritating per say. It's the people who talk endlessly about it that bug the shit out of me. It's like that co-worker who goes on and on about thier frigg'n work out routine.

"Yeah. Mondays are chest, back and tri's. You know cause they over lap... I do one-sided dumb-bell presses on the Swiss ball for balance and..."

Oh. Wait that guy is me.

Nevermind. Carry on.

It's funny. I had completely forgotten about the hippie burner stereotype when I posted this. (Actually, I had forgotten about it until dame emailed me a 'wtf, you dirty hippy' [paraphrase]).

The people I go with are novelists, electronic artists, musicians, programmers. I'm a film editor. I think of Burning Man more as an art festival than a community, anyway. Like most things art related, you're bound to think a good portion of what you see is worthless drivel.

Let's schedule a meetup time. How about Wednesday, 8pm at the Cafe?
posted by redteam at 9:44 AM on August 25, 2005

I'll be around 3:30 and Delerium/Ego too -- look for the toddler-friendly carport playground and moon rocket (Moonbase Nevada, our exact location may change). Ask for Tha Captain (or Colin may work too).

It will make boing-boing unreadable for the next few weeks, that's for sure.

How about Wednesday, 8pm at the Cafe?

I like the general idea, but the problems are that 1: Cafe is huge and filled with people in lines. 2: I have no idea what anyone looks like.

My girlfriend's getting in that afternoon, so I'm tentative, but I'll try to cruise through center camp around that time, screaming REDTEAM at the top of my lungs ...

Right on, 5MeoCMP. Hopefully we'll end up neighbors. I'll look for the friendly toddlers and the rocket.

Btw, I agree with tkchrist. Sometimes you have to realize that people not going don't care. Contain it. I learned that one early. (It is interesting, however, how negative the reactions to the odd burningman comment can be.)

Just walk around shouting "Meta!" until someone feeds you cocktails or you get laid.

Not that you'll be able to miss it, but be sure to check out the Flaming Lotus Girls Angel of the Apocalypse. I'll be a girl friday among many, and I will run the flamethrowers as often as they let me.

I'm not the grading sort, but Angel of the Apocalpyse gets a major A++++++++!!! My fave of the entire event.

Yeah the Angel was definitely a highlight of the week, especially the all night dancing going on inside of it!
