Ghost in the machine. October 13, 2005 12:23 PM   Subscribe

Ghost in the machine. I left my machine with Firefox 1.06 (with Metafilthy installed) logged in to this Metafilter thread for about 4 hours. When I returned this comment from all-seeing eye dog was in the comment box and I was logged out. So I couldn't post it, but it was a little confusing.
I suppose this could be a Metafilthy issue, a Firefox issue or something else again. Apologies if this is not the first time that someone has posted this bug. I didn't know what to search for to check.

Turn GreaseMonkey off, and don't complain unless it happens with GreaseMonkey off.

Metafilthy doesn't use GreaseMonkey.

I suspect you at some point inadvertantly hit right-mouse, bringing up the context menu, and clicked on the Metafilthy menu item. Thst would have copied eye dog's comment ito the comment box.

After whatever timeout Metafilter sets, you got logged out.

Pretty sure MeFi has no timeout set. I've been logged in for weeks.

I don't remember the last time I logged out, but it was at least 12 months ago. From memory, the cookies are set to expire in something like 10 years, so I don't think that was the problem.

I've been logged in for two years straight once. Then I got a new computer.

You are probably right orthogonality, but that's an awful lot of inadvertant mouse action:
Left click to select entire comment then right click and left click Metafilthy.
Then left click the 'logout' link on the homepage, by changing focus to another window.

I think somebody was diddling with my machine whilst I was away in retrospect. Somebody wh didn't know what the hell they were doing.
