Followup thanks from happy AskMe user with newly-named blog October 26, 2005 11:34 AM   Subscribe

I would post this over at ask.mefi, but the thread is closed, so I'll post it here.

A few months ago, I asked for suggestions with help naming my new fashion blog at work. Thanks to a suggestion from wendell, I now have a greatly named blog column! The link is inside for those who are interested -- I don't want to self-link -- but I just wanted to honor another great ask.mefi success story! Thank you, Wendell ... and thank YOU, Metafilter.

[warning warning, self link ahead!]

Wendell's suggestion was "Red Carpet Burns." Witness: Carpet Burn!

For what it's worth, the thread isn't actually closed.

(Please note that this is NOT a snark, and that it doesn't bother me to see the occasional askme update in metatalk. I'm just sayin'...)

dersins, that's weird -- when I checked a while back, it was closed. Or perhaps I've gone completely crazy.

The 30-closing policy used to apply to all three subsites, but I think Matt recently lifted it from AskMe.

Yeah, Matt just changed the rules, which would have reopened your thread.

I'm perversely drawn to this kind of stuff. Bookmarked!

Somebody used an idea from wendell? Bad move.

(You're very welcome, I think... this doesn't make me a party to any future defamation suits against the site, does it?)

All seriousness aside, thanks for the acknowledgement, I'm adding movies.com to my list of pseudo-professional credits.

I thought my suggestion "Law & Order: Fashion Victims Unit," had possibilities, but Wendell's is good, too.

Great blog, btw. Funny, topical, and no angry vibe that stuff like the bad plastic surgery blog has.

Congrats!

Excellent! Nice naming too, wendell. Do you hire out on a contract basis? We've got a company blog now and the name of it makes me want to puke.

And yeah, I like the ripper blog too! Along the same lines as the Gallery of the Absurd but nicer!

I love that one the answers marked as best explicitly says that the blog should not be named "Red Carpet Burns."

what just happened here?

Yeah not to be mean or anything but this is still a self-link.
posted by scarabic at 2:59 PM on October 26, 2005

I mean to say I'm not sure that labels make it ok.
posted by scarabic at 2:59 PM on October 26, 2005

It is by a member that has actually contributed (i.e. not someone that just joined to spam us about their site), is in MeTa where different things of this nature are posted on a fairly regular basis and the self-link was not sneaky in any way. I see no problem with it.

It's a self-link that happens in context with other actual "meat," for what little (0) it's worth, I find it completely reasonable.
posted by phearlez at 3:22 PM on October 26, 2005

Um, I mean to say for what little my opinion is worth, not the link.

And seriously guys, look at the URL. You think they really need our help with traffic?

love the name, awesome.

It's not exactly "sneaky," more like "diplomatic." It's very sweet and nice. And the poster was careful to post the link in the 1st comment as opposed to in the thread itself. And it plays into the fact that it's a followup to a previous thread (hardly one that was crying out for an update, though, and one which is still open). So it's clearly posted by someone who knows how to skate the line. Which is not to say "sneaky" but definitely shows some... guile (if you can take that word without inferring malice).

I think it would have been more appropriate to just post the final name in the original thread. And as a follow-up, it's really only necessary to state what name was selected. The hot-link to the site itself is the troublesome part. If it isn't troublesome, why is it surrounded by [warnings?]

You have to judge the well-intentioned examples by the same standards as the spam, IMHO. I'm not trying to be a dick - but this is not the place to launch blogs, plain and simple. I don't like seeing people start threads to post hot links to personal projects. Period.

I have some positions to hire for. Is it okay if I post to AskMe for help on how to word them correctly, and then post the job listings themselves to MeTa as a "follow-up?" I highly doubt I'd get away with that. This post is just so sweet that no one wants to come down on it. But the principle of it is black-and-white.
posted by scarabic at 10:33 PM on October 26, 2005

It's cool that Wendell wound up naming it. The hotlink is a wee touch opportunistic but I've lodged my protest and I just hope this can be the exception to the rule.

Sorry for those who may think this was somehow sneaky or inappropriate. The last time I checked the thread in Ask.Mefi (which, granted, was a couple weeks ago), it was closed to new comments. Someone in that thread had specifically asked asked that I report back with whatever got used. My goal was to express appreciation to Wendell and ask.mefi, and figured Meta was my next best shot since I thought (erroneously) Ask.me wasn't an option.

As for the link? I made it as inobtrusive and well-warned as possible to avoid any deceptive clicking, but figured that people would be curious. It feels confusing to say "this person helped me do something!" and then not show the result.

All things considered, judging by his comment, Matt saw the post and apparently didn't see any problems with it (I trust that he would email me if he thought it was inappropriate). If others of you did, my apologies.

...Now, won't some of you please where some heinous clothes so that I can snark about you?
