A "take it to MetaTalk" button October 7, 2001 2:57 AM Subscribe
A "take it to MetaTalk" and/or "take it to Email" buttonb below the Comment box? In the heat of the moment it would help to be reminded these options existed.
And a pony! A giant mutant (but nonetheless heart-rendingly cute) pony festooned with pornstar labia! Pleeeeeeaaase....

These are good ideas, if not for MeFi, for similar systems which may be aborning or yet to be, um, borned.

An example, from right now, from the air strikes thread. The temptation to make sudden, time and bandwidth-wasting comments is great. Skallas in the Ananova thread proposes a new rule: don't post if you're an emotional state. Matt said the same a few days back: people in distress are not good at following rules.
So I did refrain from posting things like thanking arielmeadow for pointing out that Bin Laden's remarks were made before the strikes. But I still fell victim to posting a simple sneer because aikido commented that the Nazis(lumped together with Muslims and Communists...)did not represent evil.
So perhaps a button is unfeasible. But perhaps a simple sentence, such as the warning about WTC posts above the post-a-link box, would be effective.
Also rebeccablood, in a notable show of solidarity and altruism, asked aaron to take their dispute elsewhere as it was hijacking the thread.
This is the spirit. But, in the heat of the moment, radio and TV on, MeFi going, it's just so easy to unwittingly abuse that a strong reminder couldn't hurt.
(sorry about the jumbled prose, no time!)

a "hold that thought" would help me once in a while too, MC. I find I say a lot less, and post less compulsively, if I go do something else for a little bit before posting. :)
actually, seriously, a reminder about the existance & purpose of MetaTalk might not be too bad an idea - it was quite a while, as a newbie, before I really realized what this was here for.
but maybe I'm just dense....

It's a shame that we don't have a "There's no web link for this" button to save people the trouble from typing in http://www.cnn.com...

1) A Put in on Hold button with a Remind me later if I actually wanted to say this option;
2)A Let me just check if MetaFilter and the world itself will actually survive if I refrain from posting this button;
And, for the best of all utopian devices:
3)A Review what sort of reactions this lame comment will have button, with an Allow me to reconsider, with the benefit of hindsight, whether I should still insist on making such a jackass of myself option.
(All suggestions based on previous experience, with a wild, selfish disregard for the work involved in implementing these requests)
