Happy New Year! We're already well into it here in New Zealand, and I hope that as the rest of you catch up, yours get as good a start as mine.

Fireworks are so dull on tv. I watched 5 mins worth and then rang in the new year in front of the computer. Happy New Year !

The Sydney fireworks were spectacular. Best I've ever seen.

Happy 2006 to all!

Does anyone do Hogmanay? or is that Scotland only?

Cranberry, the first time I heard of Hogmanay was when I visited Scotland in 2004. I think it's only a Scot tradition. Singing and gift giving sounds like a nice idea.

How is 2006 in New Zealand? It's still 2005 here in Minneapolis, and it's still a dreadful fucking year. Katrina. War. Floods. Etc.

We're do for a great year, I think. I hope all of you have one.

I'm drunk and watching Scarface, and my brain can only pronounce it as "Happy New Jear!"

Happy 2006 Metafilter! I broke up a fight and drank two bottles of Chimay. I sat on the couch, drank beer and laughed while the police broke up a party around me, because I'm 21 and it wasn't my house. I watched an eleven year old kid mingle and drink with a bunch of twenty somethings; he said he was from California and was in town visiting his older sister. The sixth grader at the party is already bothering me, and I'm still drunk. Hurrah for drunken revelry!

I've got to say, the best part about the new year so far was brushing the taste of stale cigars out of my mouth when I finally rolled out of bed. Christ, last nights celebratory stoagie seemed to last for about a week, and there were still a couple of inches of it sitting on the table in the garden when I cleaned up this afternoon.

Great day in Auckland, it occurs to me that the New Year isn't fun in the same way in Northern Hemisphere countries. I mean, we do things like go to the beach or hang out in the garden, while you poor folks in the cold north do fun things like... Sit inside? (I'm guessing.)

Anyway, I'm totally with you on the Chimay DtHo, though I didn't have any last night. We had a lot of wine to get through, though I got sidetracked by some Glenfiddich at one point, and ended the night with half a snifter of brandy (had to put it down when I got uncomfortably dizzy, bloody glad I did, my slight edge of fragility was nothing compared to a couple of my fellow revellers full blown throwing up hangovers).
