Why doesn't the new comment count coincide with what I have and have not read? December 31, 2005 1:14 PM Subscribe
Hi, I've been following metafilter since 2000-2001 but just recently registered an account. One feature I notice is the "new comments" count. This count rarely seems to coincide with what I actually have and have not read. What criteria does the system use to determine the appropriate "new" comment amount?
Don't feel like an idiot. We all miss out on some threads.

Yeah it's a good question. I think it's one of the most impressive features on the site, and the most useful. But you have to get the hang of that 20 minute refresh/lag.

Idiot!
I think we'll let you do-over this MeTa, though, if only because of your handle. Welcome to the ranks of the registered, mulligan. I have high hopes for you. If only so many people waited so long to register, we might end up with fewer mushroom threads.

Mulligan, I'm in the same boat, and had wondered about that, too. Glad you asked.
