Followup: home theater askme nets positive results December 31, 2005 1:20 PM   Subscribe

AskMeFi followup - nearly 4 months ago, I asked this question about home theater searching. Ultimately, the guidance from that thread led me to save up for and purchase an appropriate unit. Once I got the DVD player to output the right Dolby variant, we've been basking in good sound. Thanks, Civil_Disobediant and misterbrandt!

I appreciate the thanks and am happy to hear you're doing your own rendition of the Maxell Guy. Out of curiosity, what combination did you end up going with?

Onkyo HTS780 which is a receiver with 7.1 surround and a powered sub. I also picked up an Emerson wireless unit to broadcast the rear surrounds. I'll probably pick up a second one for the rear l/r speakers which aren't connected yet. It was a minor time suckto get everything hooked up (time consuming, not complicated for me), but the remote appears to run everything except the TiVO (at least not that I see - it looks like the TiVo is considered to be a VCR but that input is being used for--well, the VCR).

And if you're curious, the entertainment center is to the left of my fireplace. When the fp was installed, I strung a wire behind it. I used it to pull two stereo pairs and installed audio wall plates on either side so that hooking up the right and the sub would be a cakewalk.

Honestly, this doesn't seem like the sort of thing that is worth telling us all about outside the original thread, which is still open.

In my pre-coffee state this morning, I must admit that I find it difficult to muster much interest in which side of the fireplace you've installed your entertainment centre on.

I'm sure you're excited about your new purchase and all, but Meta being a followup bucket for inconsequential stuff (unlike, perhaps, IronLizard's 'hey, I didn't die' thread below) seems suboptimal.

Noted, but until Matt makes this pony, I thought it entirely appropriate to publicly express honest thanks for an issue that has come to successful closure (ulinke some of my other issues that are not as simple, or not as effectively resolved).

At the risk of sounding self-righteous, I think this is one of the better ways--trivial an issue though it may be--to reinforce that this is a functional and constructive community. And a good thankyou beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick or a turd in the punch bowl, don't you think?

Yes, but.

I'm with Stavros on the "Why are you telling us this?" front (and I'm a home theatre dork).

Some folks aren't happy unless every MeTa thread ends in some drama queen's flameout. I don't care about your stereo either, plinth; but yeah, it's good to be reminded that AskMe is about helping folks — and that, on occasion, it succeeds.

Happy new year.

Hey, the threads still young. Keep hope alive.

People actually forget askme is about helping folks?

At the end of a lovely sunny New Years Day - when I'm done cleaning up after a fun night of talking loudly, eating and drinking far too much, and generally having all things to excess - I'm happy to be able to find an excuse to sit in the shade and read boring cable pulling anecdotes on metatalk.

Haters can pucker up and suck it.

I really don't understand you people sometimes. Ah well.

Stavros, I love you like a brother. A brother that needs to learn that if you don't like a thread, sometimes you should just not read it. A brother that rode a short bus to school. And possibly a brother that needs another drink.

If I loved you any less than I did, I might be inclined to tell you, still affectionately, of course, to go fuck yourself. But I am so consumed with fraternal affection, so suffused with fellowship and warmth, that it's the furthest from my mind! Huzzah!

Which is to say, whatever.

Stavros, I love you like a sister. A sister who was cast out of primary school for biting, then home schooled - leading, almost inevitably, to the dreaded 'homeschooled kid with poor social skills' syndrome. A sister who has already had far too much to drink, and has just found a bottle of gin stashed in the bottom cupboard.

Which is to say, I was just kidding around and didn't intend to upset you.

Worst fucking follow-up ever. Just kidding. I'm going through the same thing w/ my home theatre and practically sport wood every time I get a chance to enjoy the fruits of my painful labor. Funny coincidence.

But we need AskMeta follow-up.

I had previously flagged this as noise, but the response to Stav's point begs, IMHO, an interjection.

This is PRECISELY why the open time for AskMe threads was increased from 30 days to 6(?) months. And plinth, the fact that Matt hasn't added extra features you want on top of it is no excuse.

When is the last time you read a four month old question, even if you provided an answer?
posted by The Monkey at 3:00 PM on January 1, 2006

Pretty regularly, actually. Maybe you aught to.
