I'm a bit concerned about the habit of going "soandso is a <insert henious characterization>" when people self-link. Does it show up in search engines? It's immensely, unjustifiably, horrendously vindicative if it does.

XQUZYPHYR writes "Goddamit, can't you see he's trying to EXPAND OUR INTELLECTUAL FUCKING HORIZONS?"

Exactly. If he doesn't fight the good fight against the despotic, lie-beral, PC overlords, who will?

His art's pretty impressive. Too bad he's a dipshit.

Firas, what you are seeing is vigilante justice. These self-linking bastards must be held accountable.

Not until the punishment for self-linking becomes so heinous, so unthinkably horrible that none would risk self-linking, will self-linking end.

Are you kidding? This is the kind of thing that destroys relationships and careers. I'm hoping that either deleted threads don't show up on search engines or matt and/or jessamyn have the foresight to clean up the character assasination.

I am 100% with Firas, Baby_Balrog, get a grip.

This is the kind of thing that destroys relationships and careers.

Oh please. The posts that you call "immensely, unjustifiably, horrendously vindicative" are clearly over the top and meant to be taken as such. Yes, they are intended as punishment, and yes, that's a Good Thing. There are precious few things keeping this site from getting flooded by assholes who deliberately ignore one of the site's most important guidelines. Making sure that searches for their name pull up the obvious evidence of the asshole's lack of concern for at least one online community is the least we can do.

My life was once destroyed by a mean thing someone once said about me online.

My life was destroyed several times by mean things said about me online. To be fair though, they were entirely true.

Yeah, but now you're an undead being from space. I don't get what the hell you're complaining about.

Well, I'm not interested enough in the issue to pursue this further, but it does smack of not just juvenility but taking things to an unnecessary level (seeding evidence for "the asshole's lack of concern"). But what do I know; many people care far more about the site than I do, maybe enough to bring contentions from posts and threads here to face-to-face interaction.

I don't see what's wrong with pointing out that Stephen Barnwell broke the rules. Stephen Barnwell made a choice to self-link, and to be aggressive and unapologetic about it after being called out.

If you feel any pity for him, I strongly suggest you search for his very first reply, and look for the sincere and heartfelt apology that accidental self-linkers tend to give.

Yeah, but now you're an undead being from space.

I am, in fact, an undead human spaceman. So, no, I am not from space at all. Why must I keep battling these rumors?

It's all starting again!

Firas, self-linking is a direct attack on the heart of the site. Many of us think it's possible that self-linking will become a much bigger problem here very soon, as more and more viral marketers balance the $5 membership fee against the benefits of a few hours' (or days') worth of traffic sent to their site from the front page. MeFi's a sitting duck for that kind of crap, and we have very few weapons to hand that work against it. Galvanizing the community to punish folks who shit on us is, again, the very least we can do.

I'm seriously considering beating a hedgehog to death and dipping some cocktail shrimp in its blood.

That might be the coke, though.

You brought cocktail shrimp? Wonderful! I've been meaning to do something about those pesky hedgehogs.
