Computer not recognizing iPod January 20, 2006 7:25 AM   Subscribe

I have a 20GB 3G IPOD with 4,000 songs. All of a sudden my computer will not recognise it when I plug the IPOD into the USB port. I tryed to use updater but that won't recognise my player either.I can still listen to my songs, it just won't hook up. Any ideas? Cheers to all!

errr... posting this to ask.metafilter.com might help. I've heard there are some clever guys hanging out there.

MetaTalk (this site) is for posting "topics specific to MetaFilter itself, ranging from bug reports to feature requests to questions of content". You should post your question to Ask Metafilter. It is an easy mistake to make. Don't feel bad.

urm.....try Askmefi. This will be deleted probably after some fun and games. sits back and puts feet up. Passes out popcorn.

This might be a first. It's usually the other way around.

I'm confused. According to hophead's profile, he's asked one question on AskMe and posted one thread here in MeTa, and made no comments anywhere else on the site. Didn't we used to have a rule about making a certain number of comments before you could do either of those thing?

I dished out 5 bucks and my question got deleted! Well Exc-uh-yooo-uhze me.

Oops, sorry, replace "I'm confused" with "I'm pissed and slightly baffled".

I hope this ends with a spectacular flame-out in several metatalk threads, each with hundreds of posts.

This same question (about the iPod) was asked just a few days ago, I think.

Perhaps hophead627 will post in Ask.Mefi asking why his MetaTalk thread didn't get any good responses. Perhaps he'll be a bit of a jerk while doing so.

Have you tried using each and every USB port? Maybe there is something wrong with the one you have been using?
posted by chunking express at 7:52 AM on January 20, 2006

Have you tried completely erasing the contents of the iPod? Or the posting box, for that matter?
posted by goodnewsfortheinsane at 7:54 AM on January 20, 2006

Go easy on the guy, he seems personable. He might just be waiting until this is deleted before getting pissy, but he can still ask in AskMe.

Have you tried hooking it to another computer? A different cable?
posted by daveleck at 7:57 AM on January 20, 2006

Do other devices still work in that USB port?

No, that was just for the MetaFilter front page. (Ask and Meta have time limits though.)

This is the question I was thinking of - the answers might help.

blogrrrl's flameout made me angry. This just makes me giggle. Thanks, hophead.

Did you read the manual? I'm guessing that since you didn't read the Metafilter guidelines, you probably didn't read the manual either.

While we're at it, I broke into one of my tenant's apartments the other day to cheat on my wife with this girl I know who grows pot for a living. While I was undressing her, a bunch of fast food receipts fell out of her back pocket. I have already made it clear that I have no interest in carrying on an illicit relationship with someone who eats of the McFish, if you know what I'm saying. My question is: what's that song that goes "do-dee-dooooooo-oo?" It was going through my head the whole time.

Here's another iPod recognition AskMe. In a situation like this, is it appropriate to send the person an e-mail explaining MeFi/AskMe/MeTa, or is it a "Do not try to apprehend the suspect, wait for the admins" kind of thing?
posted by Alvy Ampersand at 8:08 AM on January 20, 2006

I don't think it's a question of reading the guidelines, since he's posed a question in AskMe before. I think it's a question of making a mistake. It happens.

The timing is impeccable though. Fate or sock puppetry? Vote now! To vote for fate, SMS "fate" to 555-FSM1. To vote for sock puppetry, SMS "sock" to 5DH-OYT.

Seriously though, let's go easy on the guy.

scarabic, the important thing to remember is not to buy your mistress a diamond, especially if you're planning on going to see the latest Kevin Smith film together after stopping by the 2nd Avenue Deli. You might try writing to James Frey to ask him what to do, especially if there are any XX/XY issues between you and your mistress that might interfere with your enjoyment of Jon Stewart's Oscar-hosting. Of course, this begs the question, "Is cat declawing mutilation?"

Recent I came across a web site where you could ask questions, and people would answer them. It seemed like a great site, but now I can't remember the URL. Does anyone know which web site I'm talking about?
