Testing out MeFi jabber January 21, 2006 4:49 PM   Subscribe

I'm testing out a jabber server on MetaFilter. Use any jabber client (iChat, adium, trillian, gAIM, etc) to connect to metafilter.com. Enter your username as your_mefi_username@metafilter.com and your password is your existing website password here. Once logged in, you can IM other members that are online (my current status: ). Oh, this jabber server supports SSL for encrypted chat by default and also lets you talk to jabber users on other servers, including Google Talk (just add them to your buddy list). If this works out, I'll be experimenting with more features like chatrooms and perhaps allowing chat with Yahoo and MSN users as well. Let me know how it works for you, everyone that is a member here already has a login to the jabber server, automatically.

I added the little jabber presence to user pages.

I also added the little presence gif to your contacts page, so you can see what friends are currently online easily.

Here's how to do it on iChat:

Open up prefs, accounts, hit the plus sign, then enter your details like this.

Some systems don't require the domain in the username, but iChat does.

If anyone wants to submit config screens for other apps, drop them here and I'll throw them on a separate page for all this stuff.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 5:35 PM on January 21, 2006

I downlaoded and installed Pandion for Windows and tried to connect.. (do spaces in mefi user names work?). It said my online status was 'available' but the contact list portion of the screen jsut said "one moment please..." for a few minutes then the program crashed.
posted by Space Coyote at 5:35 PM on January 21, 2006

This is great, thank you. One question though... If you have spaces and/or special characters in your mefi name, how do you input them? I can't login the way it wants me to (EmperorYamamotosEggs). Perhaps it is client side (I am using Adium). Any ideas?

If you have any suggestions on good Jabber clients, I'm all ears. Mixed Win/Linux/OSX network.

I could, obviously, figure it out, but if someone else already has, I'd rather take advantage. :)

The MSN-styled status icon looks ugly here, but I guess it's easily recognized by most users.

Is there a standard group to join?

I'm using pandion for windows... seems to work, I think.

From Jabber.org:
n addition, certain characters are not allowed in your username:

@ ('at' sign)

:(colon)

' (single quote)

" (double quote)

< (open angle bracket)br>
> (close angle bracket)

& (ampersand)

\r\n\t (whitespace is not allowed!)

cntrl-* (control characters)
:(

I don't know if that's for the jabber protocol or just the jabber.org server, though. I'm such a n00b.

One cool feature to consider: giving all users a group of contacts thats identical to the contacts listed on their user page. Its been awhile since I've played with ejabberd, but it should be doable by replacing the table that stores contacts with a view.

Just a reminder. Those of us that have slower computers and haven't moved to Mac OS 10.4, can't use the Jabber network through iChat (or Proteus or Fire). I suppose that fugly Adium would do.

Trillian Pro does support Jabber, but you have to download the plugin and install it. Worse, the plugin crashes a lot. It's mostly stable for me with Google Talk and with MeFi's server as long as I only chat to individuals. But joining the conference room causes pretty regular crashes, although it does work sometimes.

I generally love Trillian, but so far their Jabber support is a bit iffy.

Am I not cool enough, is the room full, or did I do something wrong? Exodus chose conference.metafilter.com for the server, and I typed in my username and password. There wasn't a field for mefi@conference.metafilter.com.

Where do the B-list MeFi users hang out?

I'm logged in fine using iChat on 10.4.4, but everyone has the same lightbulb icon. Rather confusing not being able to distinguish between folk.

I tried adding people in the channel to my 'buddy list' - thanks chrismear - but they remain lightbulbs, iconwise. Any ideas how to fix this?

(Um, this problem may be down to me never having used iChat, nor any other instant messaging type program, before...)

Never mind: hit "Show Names and Pictures" in the View menu.

ok...I'm feeling like a techno geek. I've got Psi set up, but when I try to logon as Ms|Snit@metafilter.com it tells my there's an authentication error and that the user isn't verified. What am I missing?

Okay, I figured it out. In case anyone is as new to IM as I am, they should know when Matt says mefi@conference.metafilter.com, conference.metafilter.com is the server and mefi is the chatroom. I'm sure that's basic to most here, but I never use IM.

*coughs* I was using the wrong password.

Thanks, Matt!

Works for me in Gaim for Windows. Here's how to set it up for those perhaps still not sure.

Anyway, nice work, Matt. Thanks.

I thought, oh cool, what a nice pony. What a disappointment to go to MeFi Jabber and see the same old crap that took over irc.metafilter.com; mostly offensive "jokes" and I use the word guardedly. Too bad. Guess one wishing for more scintillating conversation will have to stay in these parts. Thanks anyway for all your hard work, Mathowie.

Re: Dreamhost requests above, mph has it right -- the only way to reliably allow all Dreamhost Jabber users to connect to the MF Jabber server is to let all potential servers to connect to the MF Jabber server -- all the Dreamhost servers live under the domains of their users. (So, for example, I have my "own" Dreamhost Jabber server at the domain I host there.)

Lynsey, I think you just timed it poorly. Sure there is some sillyness going on - but that has more to do with people just trying to get their clients working and others just shoot the shit to give them somehting to look at. I'd wait a bit before I threw in the towel and wrote back home about it...

I'm trying connections by way of Google Talk, and I can get into the conference, but actual instant messages from MeFi members isn't working out too well. Has anyone else had any luck?
posted by ChrisR at 10:42 PM on January 22, 2006

Yeah, Lynsey stepped in at just the right time to catch some pretty terrible jokes but missed the long discussion on books for example.

How does one join this with google talk? Is there a port issue? For instance, I can't connect to IRC at work because I think the port is blocked. So, will I have the same problem connecting to this with google talk?

*sigh*. How do I create a Jabber account with iChat? My only options are .Mac and AIM. The "Log in to Jabber" option is greyed out.

Woot. It worked.

Having the correct password does indeed help. D-oh.

Unfortunately, it seems that no one I'm familiar with is actually hanging out on the chat channel.

Have we figured out a fix for : yet?
posted by 6:1 at 7:17 PM on January 24, 2006

I wasn't aware that : was a problem; had you ever alerted anyone to it being one? (I only say that because your post implied that we should know about this bug... but it's unclear how we would have.)

I'll see what I can do later today...

Out of curiosity, how are you doing the integration? Is the Jabber server "configured" to look at the MeFi user db, or is some back-end script silently creating Jabber users?
posted by mkultra at 11:34 AM on January 25, 2006

I'm using custom classes on the Jabber server to query the actual MeFi user DB. It turns out to be reasonably simple (especially when you learn Java!). :)

Is anyone having problems logging in? I can't get in with gaim (stuck at authorizing for 20 minutes now), can't get on with pandion "one moment please..." and can't even load the mefi "who's online" page. Haven't changed any settings on my computer, but is the problem just on my end?
posted by Meredith at 3:36 PM on January 25, 2006

It didn't work with Gaim with me until I opened port 5222 in my firewall
posted by jouke at 8:45 PM on January 25, 2006

It was noted above as a problem, didn't know if anyone had figured out a fix. Matt doesn't know of one. Thanks.
