Portland Oregon meetup January 27, 2006 11:44 PM   Subscribe

And on a rainy night, when rubber tires sucked the asphalt and handsome women walked a perilous beat, consensus was called upon in Portland, Oregon. February 18th; name the time and place.

downtown again?
posted by yodelingisfun at 12:07 AM on January 28, 2006

likely so, access being what it is and all. There are a few places a bit farther out than Market St. we might try.
posted by rebirtha at 12:09 AM on January 28, 2006

I vote the couve. We got stop lights and everything.

Oh fuck no.

That is to say Vancouver is a pit of hell that one should not venture into

best meetup announcement evar.
posted by mwhybark at 9:12 AM on January 28, 2006

I'm gonna be in Vancouver tonight and I agree with cmonkey.

However, I still feel mildly guilty about the back-and-forth over last meet's location, so I'm not voting this time.

Also, Alan gets shot on sight.

posted by cortex at 9:42 AM on January 28, 2006

Cool, I'll be in stumptown that night.
posted by Staggering Jack at 9:55 AM on January 28, 2006

As long as it's downtown, I'm good with it. I recommend afternoon for a time--say 3 or 4-ish?

I'm gonna be in Vancouver tonight and I agree with cmonkey.

Didja see our stop light? It's got THREE colors and everything! Woohoo!!!

OK, I'm coming to this one.
posted by ottereroticist at 10:09 AM on January 28, 2006

Eh jeez, I'm so sorry, cortex. Tie a rope to the I-5 bridge so you can find your way back.
posted by cmonkey at 10:13 AM on January 28, 2006

We got ropes too. I cannot understand why y'all be hatin on the couve yo.

I'm looking for something to do that weekend, since it's a long one, and I'd been thinking about coming down to Portland. So, wherever you guys end up, it's reasonably likely you'll have some Seattle company.
posted by kindall at 10:34 AM on January 28, 2006

kindall, matildaben is also down from Seattle for the meetup.
posted by rebirtha at 10:48 AM on January 28, 2006

I'm actually working Fri, Sat, Sunday in Portland that weekend, so I'll be around, but busy during the day. Evening time would be much more convenient for me, although suppose I could nip off for an hour or two then head back to work.

As for location, I'm agnostic. I have a tendency to gather in McMenamins but that is from long habit more than inspired choice.
posted by afflatus at 11:03 AM on January 28, 2006

I think Lipstickthespian is also planning on coming. Can we do a non-smoking place again, that was very cool for those of us who are ex smokers (umm me)?
posted by yodelingisfun at 1:04 PM on January 28, 2006

I think I can make it. Sounds like fun. I would be amenable to any place or time, though it'd be nice to find a good happy hour somewhere.
posted by pikachulolita at 1:08 PM on January 28, 2006

Since no one likes Vancouver, how about the Lucky Labrador over on SE Hawthorne? Non-smoking inside, they have a big area out back for nic fits, and the food's not bad.
posted by DeepFriedTwinkies at 2:02 PM on January 28, 2006

kindall, I can give you a ride, but I'm probably going down for the whole weekend so you might need to work around that. Lipstick (a Metachat-only member) may or may not be attending due to sorghum stenches beyond his control.
posted by matildaben at 2:14 PM on January 28, 2006

Oh, and I vote for evening-time.
posted by matildaben at 2:19 PM on January 28, 2006

I'm cool with the lucky lab, I can even bring Reba the wonder pug. That's not downtown though...
posted by yodelingisfun at 2:35 PM on January 28, 2006

Oh my god, if there will be a pug there, I am totally voting for the Lucky Lab. It's a pretty short walk over the Hawthorne Bridge from downtown...
posted by cmonkey at 2:37 PM on January 28, 2006

I can certainly bring her, she loves bars. Maybe we can get a car pool going for the downtown people?
posted by yodelingisfun at 3:06 PM on January 28, 2006

Carpool over, drunken stumbling mob back -- it'll be a good night for the Hawthorne Bridge.

And then I can point out the very, very inconspicuous "please don't commit suicide" sign on said bridge, and explain how that lead to 15,000 words of a failed novel attempt a couple years back.
posted by cortex at 4:15 PM on January 28, 2006

Reba's not going to be out of control like all those other times is she? You remember what the judge told you about her in bars.
posted by DeepFriedTwinkies at 5:08 PM on January 28, 2006

Yay, fat pug bellies!
posted by cmonkey at 5:41 PM on January 28, 2006

Can we do a non-smoking place again

I guess that rules out the Hungry Tiger and Club 21, then.

Rats.
posted by dersins at 7:36 PM on January 28, 2006

Not rats, pugs!
posted by kindall at 9:05 PM on January 28, 2006

I haven't been to the Lucky Lab in a long time, that sounds like a fantastic idea. Especiall if there is cute pug belly involved.

Say 7 or 8 pm?
posted by afflatus at 11:20 AM on January 29, 2006

Ok cool, so the Lucky Lab at 7 or so on the 18th, bring my pug?
posted by yodelingisfun at 1:03 PM on January 29, 2006

That works. There's good drinking down there.
posted by rebirtha at 2:32 PM on January 29, 2006

Sounds like a fine idea to me. It may be closer to 8 for me as I have to leave work early Friday for a workshop, so I need to get a full day in on Saturday. Can reservations be made at the Lucky Lab? If so, it might be prudent for us to make said reservation given that we are congregating at prime time upon a Saturday night.
posted by afflatus at 5:35 PM on January 29, 2006

I'm all for pugginess. Is this the place?
posted by matildaben at 12:39 PM on January 30, 2006

That is indeed the place. I told Reba she was going and now she's all excited, viva la pug.
posted by yodelingisfun at 1:12 PM on January 30, 2006

D'oh!

I can't make it, my company takes the concept of "holiday party" and runs with it. By 2/18 nothing is booked...

At any rate. I fixed my PayPal account and will be purchasing a membership for Miles, who I imagine will be there to celebrate with you all in my stead.
posted by togdon at 1:52 PM on January 30, 2006

Yes I shall use my new account (thanks togdon) and show up as well. This time I'm official!

Also, never, ever sign your posts again. Ever.

I'll try to be there, but being car-free, the two-buses thing is not thrilling. But we went through this last time, so I'm cool with it. See you next time I hope.
posted by frykitty at 3:44 PM on January 30, 2006

Well if anyone needs a ride let me know, I'm coming from SE by Woodstock and twinkie is coming from the Couve (i'm volunteering him, I'm sure he'll be fine with it) so we can provide at least a few rides if need be...Oh but I'll have a pug in my car so keep that in mind if you hate dogs, dog hair or snot.
posted by yodelingisfun at 5:44 PM on January 30, 2006

I can't give any of you rides, but I would be happy to help the out of town visitors navigate our wonderful public transit system.
posted by cmonkey at 7:21 PM on January 30, 2006

All right TODD LOKKENS, I'll see you all at the Lab. Are we meeting at seven, or earlier for the devoted drinkers (myself and cmonkey) or what, now?
posted by rebirtha at 8:04 PM on January 30, 2006

Seven is absurdly late. I'll be there much earlier.
posted by cmonkey at 8:23 PM on January 30, 2006

Yay Miles aka Asbestos McPinto!
- Todd Lokken

P.S. There may be a Metachat meetup earlier that afternoon at someone's house, but I'm waiting for the host to confirm before I say anything more specific. Stay tuned at Metachat for more details.
posted by matildaben at 8:18 AM on January 31, 2006

Even though I live just blocks away from the Lucky Lab, it'll be tough for me to break away long enough to join the fun. :( I will try to make if I can.

PS: if the vicinity of the Lucky Lab is OK for the majority, I'd suggest having the next meetup it at Roots Brewing, a few blocks away. Non-smoking and *much* better beer.
posted by turbodog at 12:45 PM on January 31, 2006

Ha, you bastards, trying to sneak this meet-up by me my posting it prominently in metatalk.

I'm on to you.

I'll be there with Alex and my bullet-proof vest.

I propose that those of us who were at the last one allow alan to pull off whatever scam he wishes on the new people. The beginning of a tradition, if you will.
posted by cmonkey at 7:54 PM on February 4, 2006

Man, now I need to come up with something new. You can really only pull a fast one like that once...

Hey all! Can I interest you in an exciting business venture? It'll just take a few moments of your time!!

See you all there!

posted by pieisexactlythree at 9:27 AM on February 6, 2006

we're hiding it from them because they have cooties.

COOTIES!

Should I come? I don't really like the Lucky Lab...

/me can't decide.
posted by dersins at 11:03 AM on February 15, 2006

There can be no question. You will come. The meetup is not about the venue, but the people inside of that venue.

And the people inside that venue sit around saying terrible things about the people who are not inside of that venue.
posted by cortex at 3:32 PM on February 15, 2006

Just remember, if you're not in the venue, be in somewhere else...gonna be a bit cold.
