Philadelphia meetup: In response to suggestions from my most recent AskMeFi question, I'd like to try to set up some kind of fun meetup.

So, anyone with some better suggestions (read: anyone who knows more about the city than I do), please let me know what activities are ideal for this type of thing.

I was thinking of a late-June activity, ideally something like a brunch or an afternoon walk or tour somewhere on a Saturday or Sunday.

I know this is vague . . .

It seems like drinks might get the best turn out.

Well, if it happens before June 24th, I might turn up.

Hello, USA.

Gallmatias, I'll show - pick a small bar (everyone likes a drink) either in the KoP area (near where you are) or, maybe on the main line (which is between KoP and the city). Conshocken has a number of places, bryn mawr (accessable via R5).

If you're in the city, consider brunch at 10th St. Pour House, followed by a walk to Rittenhouse Square...

The Manayunk Arts Festival is Saturday, June 24 (and Sunday, June 25); the rescheduled Northern Liberties Music Festival is also on Saturday, June 24. (Ignore the date on the CityPaper article; the NL festival was postponed due to rain.) Both good excuses to get out and wander around.

My girlfriend and I would show up if it was on a weekend.

Suggestions:

a potluck picnic in Fairmount Park
drinks at a Main Line pub

I enthusiastically vote for the NoLibs music festival. We can hit N. 3rd afterward (because the Tap will be insane.)

I'll be out of town next weekend, alas! Definitely in for the next one, though (or this one if it gets magically moved). I'm in South Philly, but I'm not afraid to bike...

We (miagaille and I) vote for not-drinks-based. Music and outdoors sound good ...

Northern Liberty Music Festival on Saturday, June 24 it is.

This sounds like a good time for both the drinkers and the non-drinkers, plus it is outdoors. Let's start there, and then if people want to go out afterward for food and drinks, the option is always open.

According to this, the music starts at 4:30 but the event opens at 3:00. Let's plan on meeting at say, 4:00 pm to give everyone enough time to meet up and make introductions.

Where is a good place to meet / how will we know each other? How have meetups worked in the past?

Also, can a local or anyone who knows the city better than I provide me with some directions? I'm in King of Prussia and my IM/e-mail is in my profile.

The problem with an outdoor "music festival" is you can't chat. Really. Additionally, you can't easily find strangers in a crowd.

A meetup first somewhere nearby (not too crowded) where you can sit at a table that has "metafilter" on a card (or as a reservation) is fairly low stress.

Northern Liberties will be insane before, during and after the festival. I vote anywhere but the festival.

Same deal with the Manayunk festival. It'll be teeming with people. What you want for a meetup should be conducive to socialization. I would strike these two venues as an 'avoid'

filmgeek, good point. Old City should be, however, relatively un-insane. Perhaps Society Hill Inn? Good food, not exclusively drinking-focused spot. We could walk up to the NoLibs festival en masse.

desuetude - that sounds like a better idea for gathering the group than trying to find people in the masses of the festival. I'll trust your judgment that Society Hill Inn is a good locale. I think 3 pm might be better, then, to allow for meeting, food, and walking to still get to see part of the festival, which certainly sounds interesting based on what I've read.

So, is everyone ok with this scenario?

I might be in town on Saturday looking for apartments -- I'll try to make it.

Hey all, I'm new to the mefi meetup scene, but I've been kind of down lately and I'm in need of meeting some new people. Anyway, just thought I'd say I'm interested in anything going on for next weekend, I live outside the city in Cherry Hill NJ, and I look forward to meeting everyone.

Alright, the official meetup info is as follows:

Meet at The Society Hill Inn in Old City at 3 pm. I'll be waiting in a (hopefully) visible spot with some type of makeshift "MeFi Meetup" sign.

From there, we can walk over to the Northern Liberties Music Festival (we'll probably depart after 4, giving enough time for introductions, food, and drink).

After the festival, I'm planning on checking out a few of the bars in the area, so all are welcome to that, too.

I'll post another reminder closer to the weekend. In the meantime, should anyone have questions, please e-mail me (e-mail in my profile).

I'll be the guy wearing the very distinctive bright green STEGOSAURUS shirt.

The Manayunk Arts Festival is Saturday, June 24 (and Sunday, June 25)

Indeed, and I encourage any of you who come out for it to come say "Hello Phearlez!" at the Nice Mirror booth. I'm sure it will confuse the hell out of them and be good for a laugh.

Kidding, that'll be me and my darling girlfriend selling our wares (link with pictures of the wood & glass things we make is in my profile) and it's our first 2 day fair so we're pretty excited & terrified about it.

Our slot is down at the east end in front of the brewpub (or so my former Philly-ite roommate tells me), please do come by and say hi.

Hey, can we get a bit of a headcount going? Who thinks they'll be able to show?

I won't be there after all -- try again in the fall??
posted by footnote at 6:37 PM on June 20, 2006

So this weekend? We'll try to be there, but my computer crashed last night *sob* and I have a lot of freelance work to reconstruct and catch up on.

But maybe I'll need a break from the ultrastress.

So, two maybies it is!

I'm embarassed to ask this, having lived in Philadelphia for 5 years now, but ... where's the Society Hill Inn?

Google says there's no such thing as the "Society Hill Inn" - only 5 results. Is the "Society Hill Hotel" meant?
posted by dmd at 9:12 AM on June 23, 2006

For the benefit of all, I now have the information:

It's at 301 Chestnut Street, and is actually called the Society Hill Hotel, Bar, and Restaurant.
