MeTa is seriously broken. September 4, 2006 8:27 AM   Subscribe

MeTa is seriously broken. I'm getting a text-only layout, with porn pics. NSFW screengrab located here. Using Firefox latest update, WinXP fully updated.

Oops, NSFW here.

Also happening in AskMe--the top-left logo has been replaced with a blowjob.

...and now MeTa is fine again, except the favicon has been replaced with the blowjob.

You might be the victim of a man-in-the-middle attack. Are you on a wireless connection?

Sssh! Everybody will want one.

Nope, DSL, all wired. I'm running various spyware dealies, but nothing came up on my scheduled scans which happen every morning.

Looks like malware to me. Many of the more devious ones hook into the Windows resolver chain, so they can redirect your requests wherever they want.

There's hacking tools out there, such as airpwn, that will hijack a user's connection, sitting between the user and machine he thinks he's talking to, and replace all images served over HTTP with another one of your choice (or other tomfoolery). I've even seen people replace each image with the same thing flipped upside down, which I think is hilarious. Firefox caches favicons, so the one you're seeing was probably grabbed while your were still undergoing the attack. Clear your cache and it should dissapear.

How very weird. Spybot & XSoftSpy didn't find anything, and now all is well after a cache flush. Thanks.

Sorry #1, I guess you can turf this.

Sometimes firefox just randomly pulls stuff from the cache, perhaps when memory is running low. In the past month I've seen a weird .gif replace the Google homepage logo and just yesterday some thumbnails on flickr were animated gifs of the Family Guy.

You sure you weren't browsing those images earlier, dnab? I'm guessing a filesystem or browser foul-up.

No, I didn't recognize them. They weren't particularly good anyway.

What Question/Answer ratio should I attempt to maintain to have free porn on my metafilter front page?

So this was pulled from your server cache--or dirtynumbangelboy's browser cache?

I'm seeing a picture ad for a T-Shirt company on the front page (MeFi). Logged in etc, not been to any site that shows that ad...

It's not as exciting as porn, but I want to know what's happening, dammit!
