What's the deal with these sub.domain references to my user profile? (more inside)

So much for Matt's dream of a day without metatalk posts.

only if you link it.

Thread not closed yet? Good thing. Should a day occur without a post to metatalk, then I shall whine about something myself. I have one ready regarding posters not using tags for their FPP's, fucking wankers should use bloody tags. More than that, for it is the least of my powers, I have a fuck load of even more trivial complaints which can be deployed at a moments notice. Huzzah.

That little grey box in the upper right hand corner isn't just decoration.

I am so unworthy.... and I wished I'd never used my real name as my user profile. Fuck.

If you haven't figure it out yet, foobar.metafilter.com used to actually show all posts tagged with foobar, instead of just redirecting to the main page. This was disabled because matt said it made the server slow or something.

Thus, somewhere on the web at some point in time somebody linked to one of those tag-vanity pages, and on that page was a comment of yours (containing a link to your profile.) Thus the search engine spiders (and anyone who followed that link) would send those strange referers.

Yeah, but robots.txt should filter them all out eventually.

Also: YOU RUINED MY BEAUTIFUL DREAM.

Actually (and you may know this as well), but wildcard subdomains have worked since forever (since I've been here, anyway), and only briefly did anything useful other than just plain funnin' when they were tag destinations.

Stavros is right. The subdomains were to get around idiotic (and extremely narrow) company firewall rules that blocked metafilter.com and www.metafilter.com. And IIRC, the tag subdomains were removed because they broke that feature.

No, wait. It looks like it was not Matt's original intent to get around work firewalls. You learn something new every day.

tag subdomains were a really bad idea.

Yeah. Seems to me that the downside is greater than the upside. At least, were I the admin, I would judge it so. It's really not that big of a deal to wait the few days it takes for DNS propogation. The DNS system works amazingly well.

I also did wildcard DNS for typos. ww.metafilter and wwww.metafilter.com used to be some of my biggest 404s back when I obsessively tracked stats.

hey YOU are the one that put the tag "HugeSteamingChunkOfFecalMatter" on one of your posts and voluntarily appended THAT nastiness to your user profile. I think the subdomains you quoted at the top here are tame by comparison.
