Accidental self link in a 9/11 thread? One would hope so.

It's not a link. Let alone a self-link.

No pony for Matt today. No way.

Good call dash. While it's technically not a link, it's still self-promotion in a post. Off with his head.

C'mon, give the guy a break. I mean, who among us hasn't, at one time or another, typed the word "dilby" when they mean to type "news"? Heck, happens to me all the time...

You could make an argument that Mr. Sawthesign just has an oddly shaped signature. I probably wouldn't believe that argument but it could be made.

Dilby is the new fnord.

As I said in thread, it's clearly 'accidental'.
posted by Effigy2000 at 3:06 AM on September 11, 2006

Even if it was intentional, I'm not sure how it benefits in any way? Great, now if I search for the word Dilby, that thread will come up. I guess, if I really want to hunt down "Dilby" I'll maybe click on that user's name to see their profile?

Interesting article by ABC Dilby

How many of you snarking idiots even clicked on the link? It's a Guardian article by senior Middle East correspondent Alan Bertrand Dilby (his confirmation name is Constantine).
posted by A Thousand Baited Hooks at 3:16 AM on September 11, 2006

That guy should be banned just for his profile. It reads like a punk kid bragging about stealing someone's lunch money.

Huh? To me it's an ABC article by Ken Maguire.

rdr: I think you missed the joke? Alan Bertrand...

Huh, his post should be deleted for being a lame one link news article post with bonus GYOBFW-style front page editorializing but it doesn't seem to be a self-link.
posted by octothorpe at 4:10 AM on September 11, 2006

I removed the "dilby" which if you look at the way he wrote the post, was just a weird signature. Seems clueless, not intentional. Unless someone wants to enlighten me otherwise?

Welcome to dilby com, you can do anything you want on dilby com, anything at all. WELCOME!

Or it could be hard rain. Looks like we're starting a veritable 9/11 signature tradition.

That post sucks hard enough to be deleted, even without 'dilby'.

Am I the only one who's annoyed by the phrase "this country" as though this is the United States of Metafilter? Oh, that and the whole GYOFB thing too.

Serial Killer Slumber Party writes "Am I the only one who's annoyed by the phrase 'this country' as though this is the United States of Metafilter?"

I avoid getting annoyed by just imagining that everyone really is talking about this country (Japan), and their comments about Japan make no sense because the writers are insane.

bugbread, that mostly still works even if you presume they're talking about the U.S.

No.

bugbread has the best advice for how to deal with it.

What I can't figure out is why this post has the phrase "in a 9/11 thread" in it. Either it's a self-link or whatever, or it isn't. The fact that there are some threads by some people about a thing that occured five years ago and was sad and is now being exploited in a way that makes the whole Alaskan Wildlife Refuge drilling thing sound nice and low-impact doesn't make any difference to whether it was a self-link or not. Which it wasn't.

I should probably be bitching about this somewhere else, but I imagine I'd just get told to shut up, and no one's opinions about anything would change.

Still need a blog.

this looks like SPAM to me, because the message is not genuine and it's short, to the point. Basically a sales pitch it looks like.

I'M NEW AND I COULD BE WRONG, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE IT TO ME. IF I'M WRONG, NICELY CORRECT ME.

tellurian, your PR campaign is not working. I have nothing to gain. I don't make ad money or sell products on my site. I openly admit it's my link and you jump on me like I'm hiding something. Why r you so hostile? It seems this community is the same way. Most of your stuff is unfounded including some of the past assertions in the other post. People just love someone new to pick on.

you're like the Bush Administration, you don't have the smoking gun but you keep asserting stuff that isn't true and your audience that largely believes it are idiots.

just in case you ever make it back here after being banned, sawthesign, I'll try to explain: people did not jump on you because they thought you were hiding something, nor were they accusing you of profiting off your link. the issue is not whether or not you're making money from your website. the issue is that you posted a link to a site you created, which is called a "self-link" and which is strictly prohibited here at MetaFilter.

in fact, even if you haven't read any of the guidelines (or the FAQ, or the wiki, or any other of the available resources for this site) the rule against self-linking is posted very clearly on the new post page. how did you miss it?

Trae McNeely of Dilby, Million Dollar Nokia, Fox "Knews," and S8tan.com, is a spammer who uses membership at various online communities to blatantly self-promote his half-baked, short-lived attempts at online business. For example.
