NYC Meetup October 3, 2006 11:26 AM   Subscribe

NYC meetup? The MrsMoonPie and I will be in NYC Friday, October 13, through Sunday, October 15, staying with a friend between Soho and Notila. Anyone interested in getting together? Since I know virtually nothing about the area, someone else will have to propose a venue.

If by notila you mean nolita, which is bounded on the south by Houston, then between there and soho would put you on the traffic island in the center of Houston.

Isn't that near the Double Down Saloon? How did that work out last time?

I told you I know virtually nothing about the area. Here's where we'll be.

double happiness?
posted by mattbucher at 11:49 AM on October 3, 2006

Actually, StickyCarpet, Mr. MoonPie was exactly right. SoHo and NoLita share Lafayette as a border, and he is staying on Lafayette. You are probably confusing NoHo and NoLita, which is easy to do.

Can we please not go somewhere filled with meat? And can we do it on the 13th? Starting early? Because I totally wanna come but thems my parameters.
posted by dame at 12:27 PM on October 3, 2006

Actually what about either Revival (again), Motor City, or that basement place where we had the transit strike meetup? The former is easy to get to from the Moonpies' hotel and the latter two aren't a bad walk.
posted by dame at 12:29 PM on October 3, 2006

What was that basement place called.... it had a number as a name, maybe?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:38 PM on October 3, 2006 [1 favorite]

Yes I was in Noho.

NoLita is south of NoHo, bounded on the north by Houston Street, on the east by the Bowery, on the south roughly by Broome Street, and on the west roughly by Lafayette Street.

So am I to take it that the Double Down didn't work out last time?
posted by StickyCarpet at 12:44 PM on October 3, 2006

On the double tip, Double Happiness looks good, too.
posted by StickyCarpet at 12:47 PM on October 3, 2006

151, I think. And I don't know if it worked, but I really don't want to smell bacon (retch) while I try to get drunk.
posted by dame at 12:47 PM on October 3, 2006

Double Happiness is both expensive & crappy.
posted by dame at 12:50 PM on October 3, 2006

When you say filled with meat are you referring to the patrons or to the menu?
posted by spicynuts at 1:11 PM on October 3, 2006

I used to go to double happiness a lot and I liked it, but it is a bit more expensive than the usual meetup spots.
posted by gaspode at 1:21 PM on October 3, 2006

The drinks, spicynuts!
posted by dame at 1:22 PM on October 3, 2006

They serve normal drinks, too, dame, and you can't smell the bacon since it's inside the bottle. Plus they have a stellar jukebox.

31 Avenue C. Not the right area, but...

The newly reopened Blind Tiger Ale House might be an option. I loved the original but I understand the new location is a great place - http://blindtigeralehouse.com/

Since we're driving up from DC on the 13th, I can't promise to be anywhere early. I think it'll have to be late, if at all, on the 13th. Saturday the 14th is looking better.

MrMoonPie and eviltiff are exceptional folks! Have fun in the big city!
posted by onlyconnect at 7:05 PM on October 3, 2006

If you move it up to this weekend we might be able to swing over from other parts of the tri-state area. Cuz, you know, it's all about us.
posted by NortonDC at 7:46 PM on October 3, 2006

I might be able to come (I say that every time and then never show...:() especially since I have plans to be in/near the City that weekend (neighborhood hunting in Jersey City, and DigitalLife convention at the Javits Center). Nothing like a two-for-one to get this Jersey resident into the City =)

No real preferences on the place, although I agree that the bacon-in-drinks thing just sounds gross (sorry Jon).

Although I guess I will say that I've had good experiences at d.b.a. (bit of a ways north and east, but only about a 10 minute walk) and Puck Fair, and I've always wanted to go to the basement vodka bar, Pravda. Both the latter places are right up on/near Lafayette and Houston (where I used to work) and the former is up on the bottom end of 1st Ave at 2nd St.
posted by cyrusdogstar at 9:42 PM on October 3, 2006

Puck Fair will be way too crowded on the weekend--and their tables are service-only.
posted by brujita at 3:32 AM on October 4, 2006

I can come if it's Friday, and I just loved the meat-laden bar. They have a pool table and a very liberal happy hour policy and it wasn't too crowded.
posted by CunningLinguist at 5:05 AM on October 4, 2006

Hmm. Would you all welcome a newbie to your midst? I've wanted to come to one of these shindigs for a few years now, but I'm a wuss.
posted by brina at 5:13 AM on October 4, 2006

brina, that's the whole point. Mmm, fresh brains...
posted by StickyCarpet at 5:34 AM on October 4, 2006

Puck Fair is yuppie hell. I had a beer there once and a waitress was carrying a shrimp cocktail with an alarming amount of non-shrimp stuff sticking out of it. And the bacon martini thing is just a gimmick. All the other drinks are normal, and it's a very MeFi kind of place; cheap, good jukebox, interesting people.
posted by jonmc at 6:03 AM on October 4, 2006

I refuse to go anywhere that puts meat in a drink. Period. But it looks like it'll be Saturday, in which case I'll have to decline anyway--I'll be riding rollercoasters at Great Adventure. So whatever, go to your grody meat bar.

Thank you for taking a stand in life.
posted by jonmc at 6:27 AM on October 4, 2006

Dame... ooh! Great Adventure! I haven't been there since Physics Day in high school.

I'll keep an eye on this thread - I'm a NewJerseyite, so it's all about having a clear day and mass transit.

I liked the saloony place.

That said, I'm going to be in Atlanta from the 14th onward, so don't count my vote.

The Shark Bar?
posted by liam at 7:21 AM on October 4, 2006

Hah, okay, I rescind the Puck Fair bit :) I was just throwing it out there since I had a non-negative time or two at the place, and it was in the requested area. But you're right that it's not really a MeFi type spot.
posted by cyrusdogstar at 7:24 AM on October 4, 2006

liam's choice isn't bad. I've enjoyed the occasional beer there and it's not far from my job.
posted by jonmc at 7:27 AM on October 4, 2006

The Shark Bar is certainly close to where we'll be staying.
posted by MrMoonPie at 7:31 AM on October 4, 2006

My sister is in town starting this Saturday and she's being difficult about going to a meetup. I probably won't be able to make it. Have Fun!
posted by safetyfork at 7:41 AM on October 4, 2006

None of you know me (long-time lurker, etc) but I work on Spring and Broadway so I am at least familiar with the neighborhood.

Spring Lounge is a good bar but I've found it packed to the gills every time I've been - might be problematic for a meetup. I like Pravda quite a bit.

If you're willing to walk a bit or hop the subway, Swift on 4th St has a group-friendly back room with big tables. But it's run by the same people as Puck Fair and Ulysses. There is also the newly-opened Soho Park on Prince and Lafayette that is a restaurant and not a bar, but it's casual and they serve drinks, and it wasn't yet overcrowded when I visited on a recent Friday.

Also, hopefully I'll be seeing the Dictators on the 13th. so I probably can't make it either.
posted by jonmc at 8:51 AM on October 4, 2006

If jon and CL like Double Down, and cyrusdogstar can put up with the occasional wafts from an eyedropper of flavoring, and dame can't make it that night anyway, then Double Down on Saturday the 14th sounds good to me.

Maybe TPS can weigh in and settle this thing.

Cool. Time? We're flexible, just hanging around in the neighborhood that day.

I'm partial to early/mid/late afternoon, myself, that way I can drink for hours and still get home before 2am. *shakes fist at Raritan Valley train schedule*
posted by cyrusdogstar at 11:45 AM on October 4, 2006

I'd prefer late afternoon to earlier, so we'll have time to do our neighborhood wandering around beforehand. 5?

I'll be in DC on Saturday, sadly. But as long as Moonpie will be here, I think I'll bring my burglary tools with me....

Double Down is an awesome bar. . .

as long as you stay far, far away from the *shudder* bacon martini.

I might be able to go...too far in advance to tell. Also, I'm still on kind of a non-alcohol thing, so I'll have to see if I get over it by next weekend.

Bingo--and other mefites who don't want to drink--the contents of your glass don't matter as far as I'm concerned.
posted by brujita at 5:11 AM on October 5, 2006

Bingo, I owe you a drink regardless.
posted by piratebowling at 5:30 AM on October 5, 2006

Yea, I don't think anyone here is lame enough to be giving shit to someone who's not drinking alcohol, for whatever reason. The meetup is what's important, the boozing is optional :)
posted by cyrusdogstar at 6:03 AM on October 5, 2006

I did manage to get Dictators tickets for Saturday, so I'm out. Think of me as you imbibe.
posted by jonmc at 9:53 AM on October 5, 2006

Thanks, brujita, but it matters to me. Bars are for drinking in. If I'm there not drinking, then my presence is in opposition to the function of the bar, and I don't want to create that kind of schism.

piratebowling: You do?
posted by bingo at 2:54 PM on October 5, 2006

Yeah, Bingo. Last time you ended up paying for a drink of mine and I didn't return the favor (I think you were getting up to get a few drinks at the time). The nebbishy, guilt-ridden, little Jew in the back of my head is not letting me forget that. If not this time, another time then?
posted by piratebowling at 3:26 PM on October 5, 2006

My MeFi world is being turned on its axis here. Let me get this straight. Next weekend, MrMoonPie and his lovely wife from DC will be in NYC, CunningLinguist from NYC will be in DC, and neither jonmc nor dame will be at the bacon flavored meetup in NYC.

Okay. We're off to Stroudsburg, PA then.
posted by onlyconnect at 3:36 PM on October 5, 2006

I happen to be in Strasburg, PA right now, onlyconnect. I'll buy you a drink.

posted by MrMoonPie at 7:22 PM on October 5, 2006

piratebowling: I would love for you to buy me a drink if your motivation was just about anything other than Jewish guilt. As far as that goes, please consider it purged; we're in the season of redemption, after all.
posted by bingo at 6:29 AM on October 6, 2006

...hmm, that was meant to be flippant and friendly, but I see that it comes off as flippant and snooty. Sorry. Buy me, and anyone else, any kind of drink you like, at any time and for any reason.
posted by bingo at 9:05 AM on October 6, 2006

I know that according to the Player's Handbook, if you get stood up the proper move is to call your date the next day and say "sorry, I didn't make it last night, something important came up" to maintain the innitiative and save face, but I am going to come out and admit that I did show up from 5 to almost 7 and no one else showed.
posted by StickyCarpet at 7:20 AM on October 8, 2006

Um, unless this was supposed to be next weekend, in which case I blame you all for fussy over planning too far in advance.
posted by StickyCarpet at 7:52 AM on October 8, 2006

ha! I'm sorry, but that's very funny.
posted by bingo at 8:13 AM on October 8, 2006

Actually, I, er, was just checking the venue. Yeah, that's it. I must say that it's a perfect meetup joint. Big tables in the front, pool table, outdoor patio. No brasiers of smoking meat, no evidence of meat at all.

There was one couple at the bar and she was talking about how she caught her coworker shooting up in the bathroom at work, and extracted a valium from him as payment for her silence.

I didn't ask if they were Mr and Mrs Moonpie, but I came pretty close to asking an older Portuguese couple lingering out side, until they got on the bus that stopped right in front.

Ooh, sorry, StickyCarpet. Yes, next weekend. Thanks for checking out the venue, though!
