lots of mentions of mefi in the press October 12, 2006 9:52 PM Subscribe
Press watch: lots of mentions of mefi in the press lately, including Slate.
Depends on what you mean by “press”. Between MetaFilter and Slate, only one is owned by The Washington Post.

Do blogs count as press? Because the link "Dallas 'Q and Chicken-Fried Steak" goes to one. Doesn't strike me as a news organization.
But if google news purposefully links to blogs as news sources, god save us all.

Re: the article blag links
"It’s an old-fashioned blog (is there such a thing?) in the sense that, rather than providing a forum for yet another anti-social loner to spout his wacky political views, it invites readers to post their own links, and not just in the margins either."
How, in any sense, does that describe an old-fashioned blog? WTF?

So Slate is ~100% more pressish than Metafilter?
And incidentally, what gives with the massive bump in October?

You're right. An old-fashioned blog would only have one anti-social loner spouting wacky political views.

Just as an example of how much reach metafilter has... I posted a link to an online store for a girl that makes purses out of book covers that I had seen at a local crafts fair. I am fairly positive that it was the first time it was posted to a blog anywhere, as I checked technorati and the only mention of their url was on the website of the crafts fair itself 30 days prior:
Now look -- http://technorati.com/search/rebounddesigns.com
6 pages of links from around the world.

Although it came through in the postings that it was a rather liberal site, it did bring up some interesting options.

For the first couple of years after I first saw the term weblog, all the ones I read consisted of posts linking to interesting sites/articles/&c. (and each other), and sometimes they had multiple authors, so I'd defo say MetaFilter is an 'old-fashioned blog', it just happens to have an enormous number of posters.

Just lately, someone started obsessing about elephants. Subsequent readers/posters have put up links to their own sites that relate in one way or another to the largest extant land mammal, and the result is that...
So all the elephant posts contained self links? WTF.

That was what I thought when I first looked at it, but then I realized that by "links to their own sites" he simply meant "links to sites they themselves had come across and wanted to share," just as you'd say "everybody had their own books they wanted to talk about" and mean books they'd read, not books they wrote. We're all just obsessed with self-linking, so we jump to conclusions.

We also assume that pretty much every single person has their own website which maybe the readers of the Fort Collins Weekly wouldn't assume.

Actually, all three of my youtube links were selflinks. First, I posed as a series of animated gifs; then as two japanese musicians (at the same time) playing harmonica and guitar "respectively"; and then as a 13-year-old girl playing the tuba.
Note that I've been practicing that third one for a while in AOL chatrooms, so it didn't really count at work.

I miss MetaFilter since I've gone back to work at a more serious shop that frowns on me spending my time here and at MeCha.
But I live for press coverage so I had to come back for this. And my meds are starting to kick in so there might be some table dancing shortly.
I had been wondering about the elephant thing though.
