Animated Gifs in MeFi October 19, 2006 7:17 PM   Subscribe

i don't like it when people post pictures in metafilter. I like animated gifs even less. It makes metafilter like every other message board on the web. Probably also you're flirting with the NSFW. What do other people think? Outlaw them, or let them stay?

This is not an animated gif.

However, you can get one of those greasemonkey things if you like.

We can all have Metafilter any old way we want it.

Outlaw them, or let them stay?

They will be termed unlawful enemy gifs and held in secret till they give up their secrets.

They have their place (Where they are used humourously and, if not constructively, at least without the intention of derailing/shitting up a thread) and their time (Infrequently).

When animated GIFs are outlawed, only the outlaws will have animated GIFs.

Kidding aside, they're generally only used in threads which are clearly already a disaster, so I'm not terribly concerned about them. Of course, I wouldn't use MeFi at work if my workplace were terribly sensitive to such things.

I suggest what I usually suggest -- a Metachat-like user-preference checkbox to show/hide inline images.

My stealth preferred solution: disallow inline images entirely, or at least do something javascripty-clever like auto-thumbnailing them.

I'm not sure if this thread was a part of Miles Long's issue, but I'd argue that monju_bosatsu definitely went overboard. His defense of his .gif-crapping was equally sucktacular. Fine, you don't take this place seriously. I don't that often either, but I don't think that gives me the right to try and derail conversations (and really piss off 56K'ers).

(The thread was by no means sterling, but it wasn't half bad either. I learned some things. And I'm glad he didn't manage to get it completely off the rails simply because he didn't like where it was going. Or post blatantly [nsfw] material, as he's done before.)

posted by Miles Long at 7:34 PM on October 19, 2006

When was MeFi image free? We'll remove images that are NSFW or giant enough to screw up the page load times. People that just gifspam the place risk having their comments removed as noise if enough people flag them. I like them occasionally and most people, most of the time, don't abuse the IMG tag so it seems like overkill to just ban it.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 7:38 PM on October 19, 2006

I've long considered banning them, but every time I make a mention that I'm willing to try it people plead with me to keep them for the few times where they make sense, like in ask mefi.

We've had this debate over and over again over the years. Images are very rare, and people don't use them very often. It would be annoying if every thread was filled with them, but that's not happening. Matt can remove and replace tags at will, such as the <blink/> tag.

Right. That's it. I'm sick of all these people bitching about capitalization and the way people use it. Please sign the following document to end such bitching.

1. METAFILTER CONVENTIONS ON CAPATALIZATION - WHO THIS COVERS.

1a) All users must adhere to the stipulations surrounding capitalization as they are dictated to in the following schedule.

1b) This is a binding contract on all signatories on all Metafilter sites, sub sites and future spin-offs.

2. METAFILTER CONVENTIONS ON CAPATALIZATION - PENALTIES FOR FAILURE TO COMPLY.

2a) Failure to adhere to these terms shall result in a lame MeTa callout.

2b) It will also result in the death of a random kitten.

2c) The kitten is to be chosen by the person who dragged it to MetaTalk.

2d) Death of the poster/commenter, or the total genocide of all Kittens on Earth, will be applicable under exceptional circumstances. Pickets and pitchforks are required under such cases by the angry mob.
(i) In circumstances where this section must be applied after the total genocide of all Kittens on
Earth, Kittens may be substituted with Hedgehogs, Iguanas, Lemurs, and Budgerigars.

2e) The conventions surrounding CamelCase (or camelBack, BiCapitalization, InterCaps, MixedCase as it is sometimes referred to) are laid out under the Metafilter CamelCase Capitalization Conventions 2006.

3. METAFILTER CONVENTIONS ON CAPATALIZATION - THE CONVENTIONS THEMSELVES.

3a) There must be a capital letter at the start of all sentences.

3b) There must be a capital letter following all full stops, unless the letter follows an Ellipsis. However please not; a Semi-colon is preferable to an Ellipsis (see Metafilter Conventions on Ellipsis' vs. Semi-colons).

3c) There must not be a capital letter at the start of every word following the first word of a sentence, the exception being the use of a noun. Pronouns must not be capitalized unless they are the first word of a sentence, with the possible exception of ‘He’ or ‘She’ when being used in reference to a deity.

3c) Nouns and pro-nouns must be capitalised or else the punishment as defined in schedule (2b) will be doubled.

3d) All Latin must be entirely capitalised.

3e) Acronyms that are not capitalized are to be punishable by the terms dictated under (2d).

3f) Capitals may be used to add emphasis to particular words if the poster is feeling exceptionally lazy and refuses to use an italic tag.

3g) Capitals may be used in the titles for independent sections of a non-binding contract in the content of crappy MeTa comments.

3h) Any FPPs written entirely in caps are punishable by those terms laid out under (2d) except under circumstances applicable under (3i(2)).

3i) Any comments written entirely in caps are punishable by those terms laid out under (2d) The exceptions to this rule are;

(ii) If the comment is made as a joke; a determination on whether or not a comment was a joke is to be made by a jury of the MeFite's peers in an animated gif-laden MeTa thread favourited by at least 15 users.

(ii) If it is Caps Lock Day.

(iii) If it is a comment referencing Roman Square capitals.

3j) Any text that uses a combination of lower case letters and upper case letters in the same word (for instance 'meTAFilTEr') is punishable by the terms listed under (2b). However, it is allowable when using Metafilter in-house names for sub sites such as Metatalk when shortening the name to titles such as ‘MeTa’, ‘MeFi’, ‘AskMe’ etc or when being used under the items listed in section (2e) of the schedule.

3k) Oh yeah, an abbreviation like ‘etc’ must never, ever be capitalized. Seriously, I mean that. Do I need to remind you about the fucking kittens?

3l) The letter 'I' must be capitalized at all times when being used in its role as the nominative case of the pronoun denoting the first person singular. If it is in use as the perpendicular pronoun it must be in italics.

3m) The letter 'A' must be capitalized if it is being used as the English indefinite article at the beginning of a sentence. It must not, under any circumstances, be capitalized if it is being used as the English indefinite article in the middle of a sentence.

3n) Capitalization is optional when using letters to denote subsections in a non-binding contract in the content of crappy MeTa comments.

3o) Generally, when used in algebra or other mathematical equations, capitalization should not be used but someone who knows more about maths than me may feel free to correct me.

3p) Letters used to denote bra sizes must always be in capitals. Pictures of the bra holding the breasts are appreciated.

Contract of Capitalization.

stavros: I have no problem with individuals self-modifying their behavior. I feel I do a pretty good job in avoiding in-lining extreme or NSFW images myself. I swear like nut-kicked pirate in text, but goddamnit, it's part of who I am.

What I have a problem with is someone using the "some of us browse from work" argument. I've had jobs where I avoided MeFi at work, and I've had jobs where I spent hours every day on MeFi while at work.

People have to make a judgement call of their own if it's acceptable where they work at. It's their liability, it's their risk, it's their job and livelihood. They need to accept responsibility for their own actions.

Again, I do modify my behavior. I'm not at all saying that self-policing is a bad thing. I'm not a fool.

However I would never, ever make a serious, ernest request that people modify their behavior here or tone things down or otherwise stop expressing themselves because my own workplace had restrictive internet use policies.

I don't want to eliminate posts in the blue to erotica. I don't want people to have to refrain from using any words they felt the need to use. I don't want people to feel that can't post fringe, counterculture or rec-sub posts or any number of other potentially workplace-averse topics just because I'm browsing from work.

I see it as a client-side vs. server-side issue. The freedom of the server should always takes precedent - the clients can modify their consumtion as they see fit. This affords the broadest spectrum of content.

So, I am thinking of the community, and it's freedom of expression and not myself when I make this argument, and it's mildly offensive to me that you can't understand that or acknowledge that facet.

Honestly. Seriously. I can't really put it into words how serious I am. If it was pointed out to me that my participation here was a net negative to the community, I'd happily leave. I'm not that emotionally attached to typing random shit into a little box.

No mention yet of the chicken fucking GIF? I mean, man, that was... well, I don't know how else I would have seen that if not for MetaFilter.

When did that happen?

Inline GIFs: useful
At times, but often abused.
Likewise, lack of caps.

What stavros said. It works fine on MetaChat. When I'm at work, I leave images off, unless I need to look at something specific. When I'm at home, I leave them on, 'cause, hey! - time to unclench. I really don't get why this has to be an all or nothing thing.

But if it does, then I vote for all. Because I don't need to be fucking protected from words and pictures I don't like. MetaFilter is both a community, which implies interaction with ideas I might find offensive, and it's a business, which implies that it's probably in mathowie's best financial interest to eventually water it down for the widest appeal. So far, I think he's made a valiant effort to resist the gentrification of MetaFilter. Because I guaranfreakinteeyou - the more restrictions you put on a place like this, the less interesting it will become. All good things are messy. That's life. Open up a moist towelette, have a seat, get that MetaFilter all over you.

Even if it has been brought up before, i think it's totally valid to bring it up again every once in awhile, to take mefi's temperature on the subject. And to keep things from getting too fark-y.

thanks everybody! i learned a lot. mostly who the assholes are. And i got a fuck you from quonsar! Now i'm somebody.

Miles Long posted "i don't like it when people post pictures in metafilter."

It's often useful on Ask.

crunchland writes "This topic has been brought this up so many times, and he says that he is willing to pull the plug on the image tag, but apparently a few people plead with him to keep it, and so it seems like they have more pull."

I'd think it more that the argument that images are useful is more compelling than the argument that images are annoying.

"[Images are] often useful on Ask."

But their usefulness isn't diminished if they're made available via a link rather than being posted inline.

"What do other people think? Outlaw them, or let them stay?"

Miles Long, I think you don't understand that Metafilter is NOT a democracy. It's basically one net.celeb's personal blog that he gives us conditional write permission for (for a fee now) and that his buddy Jessamyn helps him run. This has been demonstrated countless times. I'd've thought you knew that by now, "Mr. member since: April 2, 2004".

No, I think that Matt doesn't think that it's worth the hassle of taking away your inalienable right to post an image of a dancing squirrel playing the harmonica, to post it when it doesn't even make sense to the thread, or even if it's not particularly funny. He doesn't want to strip some people of the little shreds that pretend to be a sense of humor, who don't have an ounce of cleverness aside from the funny pictures they found on fark. That it's easier to put up with the bullshit than to apply a little more control on the people who evidently have none. The cacophony of displeasure that arise because a chatty askme thread gets deleted is small compared to what we'd have to endure if he did away with inline images from the crybabies who cling to them.

We do. It's in our browser preferences.

loquacious : "Really, I've been getting bored, and considering leaving. Today was pretty terrible. It was pretty much an endless stream of unbelievably terrible anti-GOP posts. Yeah, it's news and all that, but damn. I keep looking around for the fun, weird, cool links and the majority just seems like it's either bad news, strident, preachy or pretty much not best of the web."

I suspect there's an election coming up in the US (I can keep track of the presidential elections, but I dunno when the other ones are), and MetaFilter always gets really shitty around American election time. A few months after the election, things will probably return to interesting.

I know that in Firefox, which I use, you can turn off image loading on pages for images not on the page's domain, but in practice, this option is somewhat less than useful, as I don't think it handles subdomains well, or actual legitimate cases where 'external' images are being used. There doesn't appear to be any way of telling it "don't load external images from *.metafilter.com", and so an option in our preferences here would be nice for those who don't want to see inline images here.

bugbread: Yeah, I know. And often the links and news as they're done here is far superior to just about anywhere else, as was pointed out to me in an IM earlier today. They are valuable.

It's just ...depressing. Dramatic. Stressful. The news sucks, and outside of the odd glance at news.google or news.bbc I actually probably get most of my news through MeFi. I often wish for a newsfilter-filter, or an alternate page for that kind of stuff, or whatever. I wish people (including myself) would learn better journalistic technique, to editorialize less, or to editorialze more subtly, deftly and succinctly, and to consume less of the front page with the depressing stuff.

It's just all growing more and more wearisome.

Stop the world! I want a chocolate eclair!

So we're agreed? The solution is to ban Miles Long. Or at least prod him into a flameout. The latter would mean no more Miles Long and it would please Languagehat. Win-win.

Jonson, I'm, er, bummed that I have that book in storage. It's much more fun to keep it on the coffee table.

Rehabilitation, not exile, EB. We force Miles Long to make a series of upbeat, apolitical posts as penance, and to provide loquacious with tasty morsels of fun and oddness so that he doesn't wander off.

And then he can flame out if he wants.

i don't like it when people post shitty whines in metatalk. I like double whines even less. It makes metatalk like every other community blog I frequent. Probably as whiny as a face warming party at your NSFWife. What do other people think? Face or ass first?

Most browsers will stop animating all gif images on the page when you press the escape key. In firefox you can also change (in about:config) the key image.animation_mode to "once" to have it loop once and stop, or "none" to prevent all animation.

To disable the blink tag, set browser.blink_allowed to false. (This is the only one of the above that I do, apart from hitting escape on pages with animated advertising.)
