Possible self-post from user with no real comments December 15, 2006 8:08 AM   Subscribe

I'm not sure if Tasty Like Your 9V Battery has taken IronLizard's advice to self post literally but 2 of their 3 comments ton MeFi before posting to the front page consist of "La." and 2 of their comments to MetaTalk are "I am just posting to this dead thread. La la la." and "La."

I just wanted to do it with my eponysterical sock. Generally, I am an upstanding citizen. If one of the mods want me to email them about it, I'll be happy to.

(Also apparently MeTa comments don't count towards your blue posting bar.)

In lieu of a flameout, let's have a "guess who TLY9VB really is" contest!

I'll put a buck on loquacious, just to start things off.

Tasty Like Your 9V Battery writes "I just wanted to do it with my eponysterical sock. "

How is your userID/post combination eponysterical? Is licking 9V batteries some kind of "PUA" technique?
posted by Mitheral at 8:46 AM on December 15, 2006

Heh. If it were me, I would have posted it under this stupid username just in the interests of eponystericism.
posted by CunningLinguist at 8:47 AM on December 15, 2006

It's some kind of "vaginal flavor simulation" technique, according to AskMe. Who knows?

Hmm, good point, CunningLinguist. Is it too late to say me?

Yes.

And Mitheral, did you miss this grand moment in mefi history?
posted by CunningLinguist at 8:50 AM on December 15, 2006 [1 favorite]

I don't like the term eponysterical. I think a germanesque word like schadenfreude would be better: I propose "aussagenameverbindung".

Yes. And, uh, strange. The check out aisle is never going to be the same.

Explain to me again why we allow sock puppets when they are clearly just an existing user who is trying to make a gag?

Five dollars worth of funny?
posted by nickmark at 9:35 AM on December 15, 2006

Not me, btw. Unless it counts if I'm the 9V battery the name's referring to. I can't speak to that, given the anonymity, but it's statistically unlikely.

Or just ban both accounts and make some s'mores. Being a dumbass sockpuppet is one thing (That I hate on principle), but that stupid "la" shit fucks with other people's My Comments page.

No an suppository. I've gone both ways with that typo today. I need a hot toddie.

I guess I need to reiterate this: I don't do sock puppet accounts, at all. They don't really bother me, but I don't own any second accounts.

A) I'm poor. No, like starving artist poor. As in I actually enjoy getting new socks and underwear for Christmas. And Trader Joes cards! Anyway. I didn't pay for this account and I don't intend to pay for a 2nd account for making jokey comments. That sounds like a perfectly unreasonable waste of drinking money.

2) I don't have any problems saying whatever I'd want to say with this account. While this may be unbelieveable for some to hear me say it, I'm a strong believer in "don't say stuff online that you wouldn't say in person." There are perhaps only a very small handful of snarky oneliners I've typed here that I wouldn't utter in person. Surprisingly my mouth has never gotten my ass kicked.

Regardlesss, I don't do sock puppet accounts - for me there's no point. Sorry if that's boring or undramatic but you folks won't ever have to worry about me being behind a sock puppet.

Now go lick a battery. It's good for you. Especially those extra salty lithium ones.

It was only $5 and I was feeling both silly and flush. And you can see from this brouhaha that I rarely use it. But I am sorry that I screwed with people's comments pages. I never use them, so I didn't consider than angle.

If I had the money, I'd register "Oh for the love of God, won't somebody PLEASE favorite my comments!", but then, I'd like to think that my comment history on MetaFilter (MetaTalk especially) has done the necessary work to associate that phrase with the Eideteker™ brand name in the minds of users with id#s great and small.
posted by Eideteker at 3:01 PM on December 15, 2006

Though if someone wants to gift me a sockpuppet, they could always give me "I'm nothing if not self-effacing".

That's right, I used gift as a verb. Suck it, languagehaters.

It's kinda sad that when I don't have much time to read Mefi, I come to MetaTalk first.

so it's noise if we question a stupid practice (allowing sock puppets), but it's not a problem for sock puppets to make stupid comments? The mind boggles.....
posted by garypratt at 8:44 PM on December 15, 2006

No, noise is a problem generally and sock puppet noise is slightly more onerous than regular noise. I'm not sure who you may be misunderstanding, but I hope it's not me.

Good thing I'm not sock puppet, then.
posted by IronLizard at 9:13 PM on December 15, 2006

I think jessamyn was telling the sockpuppeteer that they know who it is, and warning 'it' not to fill Metafilter with noise. If she'd been referring to the callout as the noise, she would have said MetaTalk, right?
