Commercial Link in FPP? January 24, 2007 10:23 AM   Subscribe

I'm putting together a FPP about a certain inimitable cartoonist. I've found a place that has a lot of said cartoonist's strips available to view online. Great! But I'm concerned about linking to it because it's a commercial site. Pros: It's the most extensive collection of this artist's work online as far as I can tell. Cons: They're selling something. I'd like to include the page in my FPP but I'm not sure if it would be appropriate.

I intentionally kept things vague because I didn't want to spoil my FPP. It'll be my first time and I just want everything to be perfect. But I can give more details or link to the site in question if that's necessary to make a determination.

Do you mean that you need to pay to see the images or that they are selling prints or something? The former is probably not OK.

Also, if it's a supplementary link and you are in doubt you can always prepare a first comment including the link before you post with more explanation.

They're selling prints. Viewing them online is free.

There will always be haters. But a quality FPP always rises above their noise. I'd say go for it.

y2karl, that must be a use of the word "inimitable" I'm unaware of.

I made a post yesterday with images from artnet, which has galleries of stuff for sale. No one complained. For the majority of copyrighted work, you're likely to only find large collections of images at commercial sites.

Or, quite possibly, Bill Keane.

John Callahan.

I also wanted to see if anyone could guess who I was talking about. I left one clue!

Oh, Galaxie, you will THINK your FPP will be perfect... you will slave over it day and night. That's what MeFi does to normal people: turns them into obsessive freaks who get their entire self-worth wrapped up thier FPP. Especially the first one. So, take my advice:

RUN!!! RUN AWAYYYY WHILE THERE IS STILL A CHANCE!!!!!

In case you don't take my advice, here is what I plan on commenting, just to get things rolling:

This shit again??!!! Oh brother!!! Meh. Yawwwwnnn... TRY HARDER!!! Go back to Fark! Flagged as lame! Is this still here?

Everyone: Feel free to copy and paste as needed.

Yeah, don't sweat it. 2 years it took me before I found a post "worthy" of an FPP the response? tepid. Not only did nobody jump down my throat, nobody seemed to notice in the first place! Some posts get deleted, some get panned, some get rave reviews. No way to know which is which until you post

Your first time will never be perfect. It'll just be awkward and quick. And there will be more bodily fluid than you expected.

Well, Galaxie 500 featured Dean Wareham and Dean is now in Luna and Luna's lastest album cover was drawn by Adrian Tomine and as Adrian Tomine is a descendant of Dan Clowes, I, apparently, got nothing.

Your first time will never be perfect. It'll just be awkward and quick. And there will be more bodily fluid than you expected.

Moonlit night. Two young (but slightly older) and insistent (but gentle) women, soft grassy hillside facing south over summer lake, shimmering reflection of full moon in the ripples rucked up by the warm midnight breezes.

It's mostly been downhill from there.

Please don't ask if an FPP is ok. It's so...how to say... Jewish. I mean, really, it's pure ritual. It doesn't work on us anymore. Just post it and see what happens.
posted by nixerman at 8:49 PM on January 24, 2007

So, what was the clue? Aside from the word "inimitable," I can't really see any other language that might be construed as a clue.
