What are the most favorited commetns? February 7, 2007 1:30 PM   Subscribe

What are the most favorited comments on metafilter? I found the faq link to the last 24 hours' worth of favorited comments, but I wonder about the all-time greatest bon mots, putdowns and general jocularity. Thanks!

With a little luck and a lot of clicking, this one'll make the list within the next hour or so.

This is the greatest comment ever made. It will slim your thighs and make your SO eternally hot. It will secretly turn your PC into a Mac without your smartass Mac friends any the wiser. It will give conservatives a burning sensation when they pee, and make liberals allergic to condescension. It will end the culture war once and for all by making everybody polysexual and horny. Those poor bastards will finally smuggle their money out of Nigeria. It will cure vegetarianism in our lifetime. After this comment, your favorite band will no longer suck.

That "last 24 hours of favorites" page doesn't do what you'd assume it would. You assume it would be a list of "posts/comments from the last 24 hours that got the most faves", but it is, "faves from the the last 24 hours that are the most faved".

This is my new favorite song:

Mystery Lifeguard (sung to the tune of Guantanamera)

No one can surf Tiki Beach waves
'Til they've got rad moves a-plenty.
One or two moves just won't make it.
I'm talking five, ten or twenty.
When you are rad you will get there,
And you'll get stylishly wet there

Mystery lifeguard,
They call me mystery lifeguard
Of Tiki Beach, yo,
That's me, the mystery lifeguard.

Mystery lifeguard,
They call me mystery lifeguard
Of Tiki Beach, yo,
That's me, the mystery lifeguard.

What are the most favorited comments on metafilter? I found the faq link to the last 24 hours' worth of favorited comments, but I wonder about the all-time greatest bon mots, putdowns and general jocularity. Thanks!

This is sort of a hard question to answer. I'm sure there are a ton of people like me who only use favorites to bookmark posts/comments they'd like to come back to at a later date. In fact, as far as I know, I've only ever favorited one comment as a show of "solidarity" with the commenter (if you will).

Other times it seems people favorite comments to show that they agree with the original comment and don't feel like commenting themselves.

I suppose this is my way of saying that there are dozens of comments that make me inwardly laugh/smile/snicker/laugh out loud in a given day, and I don't favorite any of them. I guess I prefer to keep my love and adulation somewhat secretive! And on the entirely opposite note, there are a variety of comments that get a ton of favorites that are nothing more than simplistic pandering to a tired old in-joke. So, really, who cares.

Besides, everyone should know by now that there are two very good ways to acquire an ungodly amount of favorites: 1) Post those fun "What if" questions to Ask Metafilter which invariably gain 20+ favorites a go, or 2) Post a link (or link dump) to a site (or sites) so chock-full of cool things that nobody on earth could sift through them all in a single sitting (bonus points for questionable legality).

I don't understand why more people haven't favorited "We have cameras."

Out of curiosity, what would be the point of going back through the catalogue of old Metafilter posts to favorite things?

To have a little picture of metafilter's history in an easily accessible place, sort of like a wallet photo? I think hugsnkisses has done this pretty effectively, actually.

I don't ever post something that get, like, 35 favorites, but almost everything I post gets favorited by at least one person. So, you know, no great bursts of mind-searing genius from the Astro Zombie, but everything I say is just a little bit genius to at least one person. One of these days, I'll drop the comment bomb to end all comment bombs, and it'll kill, and I'll get favorited, like, 300,000 times, and people will be all, whoo, where did that come from, and everybody will be all, like, well, look at his track record.

If only there was a way to mark which favorites we've found particularly valuable or noteworthy, whether our own, or the favorites of others. I've found it hard to keep track of which favorites have meant something to me on previous posts and comments. Sometimes, and this thread is an excellent demonstration of this, a comment will receive multiple favorites, like cortex's first comment, which currently has 49; say (for example) that several of those were really helpful to me, and I wanted to revisit them later -- how can I do that? They're all sitting in a big pile, indistinguishable from one another. I think we need a way to mark our most esteemed favorites.

I consciously try to keep the ratio at 1-1, but it's impossible. Even though I am better than any given person at MetaFilter (see above comment for proof), I am not enough better such that I produce as much that is worth saving as the other 50,000 of you do in sum total.
