I'm currently looking at applying for a scholarship that's ham radio related, but the scholarship in question requires a reference from a current member of a certain ham radio club. In the process of trying to find someone to speak for me, I thought someone on MeFi might be able and willing to do so. Is this an appropriate question for Ask? If not, I'll hold off.
Thanks! posted by Inkoate at 5:57 PM on February 12, 2007
It's sort of not what AskMe is for, since it's more of a classified-ad thing than a "help me answer this question" thing. Unless, for some crazy reason, you're having trouble getting in touch with some ham radio club and oyu need help doing that. Otherwise, I'd just let this question stay open here on AskMe and see what comes up, or search past ham radio wuestions (have there been any) to see if there are folks you could ask. Good luck, in any case. posted by jessamyn at 6:08 PM on February 12, 2007
Thanks Jess, that was my gut reaction as well. I'll leave it by saying that I'm looking for members of the Quarter Century Wireless Association, and if anything turns up, then that's great. My email address is in my profile if anyone out there can help. posted by Inkoate at 6:20 PM on February 12, 2007
(Also, keep in mind I'll be doing a mefi scholarship this spring, so you'll have that chance too to get a grand or two.) posted by mathowie at 6:40 PM on February 12, 2007 [5 favorites]

Either 1) Matt's fucking with Inkoate, in the hilarious "I can give you lots of money for your education, just kidding I really got you, you should have seen your face" kind of way, or 2) the first we hear about the possibility of a MeFi scholarship is in a one-sentence parenthetical comment. posted by Plutor at 7:03 PM on February 12, 2007
No, he's mentioned it before. posted by cribcage at 7:10 PM on February 12, 2007
Many times. Let's hope it comes off this time. posted by dg at 7:12 PM on February 12, 2007
Naw, I'm serious about it. I've been meaning to do it for years (I did it in 2001), but this spring I'll do it for sure. I'm shooting for April or so to do it, and I'll give a couple weeks notice when things are in place. posted by mathowie at 7:13 PM on February 12, 2007 [1 favorite]
I'll be gleefully donating a bit, but before I do, I've got to lobby for a graduate/trade competition as well! Neat! posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 7:42 PM on February 12, 2007
Good idea - what about those who choose a non-academic career pathway? Will the scholarship be open to them? posted by dg at 8:26 PM on February 12, 2007 [1 favorite]
Say... how about a MetaFilter retirement fund? Helping old-time Meafilterians enjoy their golden years. posted by timeistight at 9:17 PM on February 12, 2007
HelpMe is a great idea for a place for all manner of community generated fundraising projects. Not that I'm completely sure such a site would be a good idea, but if we had such a site that would be a good name for it. posted by By The Grace of God at 3:52 AM on February 13, 2007

Let's just call it "UN(owen)RWA" and be done with it. posted by felix betachat at 5:03 AM on February 13, 2007
HelpMe would be wonderful--it could be a seed thing, with microgrants or something. posted by amberglow at 7:38 AM on February 13, 2007
I think HopeMe would be even better. Uplifting + Inside Joke = Teh Win! posted by Rock Steady at 8:03 AM on February 13, 2007
Wow that's a great idea Matt! I believe that children are the future. Or maybe giant bugs are the future, but my heart says kids. posted by Mister_A at 8:06 AM on February 13, 2007 [2 favorites]
I don't know, Mister_A, I wouldn't discount the giant bugs model just yet.
Matt, a MeFi scholarship would be pretty freaking awesome, as would, I suppose amberglow's microgrant site, but that might be straying a ways from the One True Pathâ„¢.
I'm also going to law school, not undergrad, which might affect my eligibility for the great MeFi scholarship... posted by Inkoate at 9:04 AM on February 13, 2007
We did grad and undergrad last time, so I don't see any reason not to do the same this time around (I think the top three last time were two undergrads and one grad student).
I might figure out a way to make the whole thing a tax writeoff but then I might have to be more official about the rules and crap (and not take donations but use just my own money which is fine and what I planned from the start). posted by mathowie at 9:33 AM on February 13, 2007
Thanks!
