I see no SF meet-up on the calendar, but one should be. I vote Mission-area. Thoughts?

I will be randomly be in town this weekend, from Indiana, and will stop by if it happens to be this weekend and I can.

Don't plan around me, by any means, because odds are 50/50 at best that I'd even be able to make it.

Meet-ups always seem to be in the Mission. I wish there'd be one in the North Beach area.
posted by goml at 6:56 AM on February 26, 2007

I vote the Rite Spot. Mission-y. North Beach? Really? Okay -- maybe Specs? Or is Tosca's still around?

(Based on prior experience, this thread will lead to no conclusions re when and where such a meet-up should occur. But it's fun anyway.)
posted by ClaudiaCenter at 9:23 AM on February 26, 2007

I'd definitely try to make it. North Beach is a lot harder for me to get to, but I can try to figure it out somehow.
posted by harrumph at 9:44 AM on February 26, 2007

I vote Mission (yes, I live there; yes, I'm lazy). Never been to the Rite Spot, but I've heard good about it. Any night but Thursdays works for me.

GESTALT>

mission is good because it's barty.

i probably won't go but i like making bar suggestions.

here's another one: third street bar and grill!

or better yet: the ferry! 4 bucks! great views! many people don't even know how cool it is! you could always go to the first and last in oakland afterwards!

Here, I'd just been wondering why meetups never happen here.

This week and weekend are especially bad for me. After that is fair game.

I was thinking about this the other day. A meetup would be cool. I might (might) be leaving town over the weekend, but I'm free otherwise.

I want to go - vote for BART access (which North Beach is not) and willing to cross the bridge unlike you West-Bay snobs! (just thought I'd try to alienate you all before meeting you.)
posted by serazin at 10:47 AM on February 26, 2007

This Marinite snob says bart-shmart. The Mission has Bart, but Bart doesn't serve Marin, and there is no public transportation back to Marin from the Mission. Yes, I know you all don't care if I never go to meet-ups because they are always somewhere I can't get to on my own via GGT transit.

*goes and sulks alone at the GGT bus platform*

Aw, what about the back room at the Toronado on a Saturday afternoon? :) Whee! Sausage and beerz!

Or the upper bar seating at 21st Amendment. Tons of room up there during the non-baseball season.

Someday maybe there will be a North Bay Area meetup, eh, goml?
posted by Lynsey at 11:27 AM on February 26, 2007

Nope, I doubt it, because this past summer I invited the Mechazens to the Marin County fair to see/hear Joan fucking Jett, and then ended up not going myself after I suggested the meet-up in the first place. I flake out too easily to ever suggest a North Bay meet-up again.

I get bummed because these meet-ups always seem to take place in a bar, and well, if you are a non-drinker or a recovering alcoholic, that isn't the best choice of venue to spend an evening....

I might go if the meetup is BART friendly.
Depending on the actual day and time, of course.

Agreed (even though I'm not in recovery). I like the idea of a meetup in a coffeeshop. Would anybody else show up?
posted by Rash at 3:05 PM on February 26, 2007

Coffeeshop sounds great- Cafe Abir sounds great- Late afternoon sounds great.
How about this Saturday, 4 or 5ish?

Failing that, my vote goes for Friday or Saturday night, and Mission is ok.

One day, though, we'll do it in the Richmond district!
posted by purplefiber at 3:39 PM on February 26, 2007

I'm definitely in the prefer-coffeeshops-to-bars crowd.

There are a lot of great coffeeshops that serve beer. Like Revolution in the Mission, or Brainwash in the SOMA. Brainwash is a favorite of mine, and is also like two blocks from my apartment.
posted by roll truck roll at 3:45 PM on February 26, 2007

I like Brainwash! I like places with pinball.

Brainwash is great for me. Three blocks from my apartment, close to my work. The nachos are good.
posted by Dataphage at 5:49 PM on February 26, 2007

I'd vote for (and show up for) Revolution in the Mission.

The thing about Abir and Brainwash is that they are both very BART-unfriendly. Revolution is a couple blocks from the 24th/mission station. As rtr points out its also a coffeeshop that serves beer and some food too.

But, honestly, I think someone should just pick a place and try to have these more often, in different places than having them infrequently and try to accomodate everybody.
posted by vacapinta at 6:23 PM on February 26, 2007

Revolution is great, but a little small/crowded depending on the time of day and whether there's music going on there. Of course, I wouldn't object to a bunch of MeFites turning up the next time I'm playing there, but I'm not allowed to promote my own shows now, am I?
posted by purplefiber at 6:27 PM on February 26, 2007

Vacapinta, I can't think of a more authentic San Francisco experience than stumbling drunk from Brainwash up 6th street to get to the Civic Center BART. You might score great crack, an STD and a couple stab wounds, no extra charge, in just 4 blocks.
posted by Dataphage at 6:46 PM on February 26, 2007

Hey now, don't talk about my hood like that.

But yeah, I second purplefiber that just calling these things and doing them is better than stalling them while trying to make everybody happy.

The abundance of San Francisco MeFites seems, oddly, to be the reason why meetups don't happen more often.

hahahaha... god, you're right.

(1) Is it on a bus line that my house is on?
(2) Is there parking?

Those two things pretty much wrap up whether or not a SF meetup will ever happen.

Oh, and I'll do Cafe Abir. (We drunkards can sneak across the street to Fly and get more b33rZ.)

Abir is crowded, with rude service and mediocre coffee. I will be enchanted to meet you there, it'll feel just like Metafilter. :)

Not on topic:
roll truck roll, if your profile is correct, I could throw stones from my laundry room into your house. The only reason I talk about OUR hood like that, is because it is the only place in SF where I've seen blood stains on the sidewalk with pieces of hair, bone and fatty goo in them. That was a few weeks ago, when the whole area was cordoned by the police. Do you know what happened?

Yes, that definitely is my location. What happened that night? I have no idea. I didn't even know about it until my fiancee came home from work. At first, the cop wouldn't let her through. She said, "I live here," and he said, "You've got guts." I went and talked to the cops a little bit, and then some bystanders, but I couldn't get much information out of anyone.

But the thing is, I do like this neighborhood. I like being close to cool places like Brainwash, Tu Lan, and Rainbow Grocery. It's like the Mission, but without the dress code. I like the constant noise on 6th street; it would feel really lonely and creepy without it. Where else in the city will you regularly find a crowd of teenagers playing craps on your doorstep? That's just adorable.

I spent so many years as a kid in the midwest fantasizing about moving to a big city; I'm sure not going to waste it all by living in the Sunset or North Beach.

So what just happened here? Did two meetups just get scheduled? Or are we still deciding between them?
posted by roll truck roll at 9:09 AM on February 27, 2007

pantsrobot, just show up, um, and try to figure out who the mefites are. Usually people try to nab a large table or group of tables, so that's a possible visual clue. Sometimes there's a sign.

I'm a pretty blunderful and clueless person, but I managed to find meetup people the first time I went.
posted by oneirodynia at 4:05 PM on March 7, 2007

Alternatively you could just walk into Revolution and shout out the names of well known mefites and then everyone will figure out who you are.

Although if you're shouting things like " If I had an anus Leo Trotsky fish fucker signal jessamyn!" random strangers will probably give you their spare change as well. Win/win.

However, I still have no idea if I'll show yet. I was up late and I had to rise early to meet someone, and then I have to be up pretty much all night getting drunk engineering and/or DJing for this webcast thing we do here at the co-op.

And all I can think about right now is a freakin' nap.
posted by loquacious at 12:03 PM on March 11, 2007

OK, it looks like I'm not going to make it. I still haven't grabbed a nap and I keep getting distracted by things, and I have to be here tonight and all that.

If anyone wants a chill hangout/afterparty kind of action and they like underground techno/breakcore/etc, I'll be spinning and hanging out with my housemates probably pretty late tonight.

There's plenty of room (we have art shows/music shows here), lots of random interesting people, cheap corner boozemart within walking distance, smoking friendly, etc. The place is ghetto and not for the faint of heart, but its comfy. Goods are odd, but the odds are good. And unless you spend a lot of time in living co-ops and such, it'll probably one of the more novel, bewildering or interesting places you'll ever visit.

Email for directions.

Dammit!

We need to do something else soon. I just bought a friend a gift account who's interested in showing up for meetups, and I recently discovered that a friend of mine has had a MeFi account for a long time (and bizarrely he was aware of me as a poster before meeting me).

squirrel? scarabic? DaShiv? We need to get some kind of East Bay thing going!

I totally missed out. The beach was calling me...totally spectacular weekend.

I'm in the East Bay too and would love to meet new peeps!

I was late but made it. DaShiv was amusingly toasted and chatter-box-y (see picture of DaShiv inspecting strange loopy curtain thing). Wimpdork brought an activity that was linguistic-arty. I drank bear. The bartender was crabby. It was fun.

I had a great time (but I didn't notice ClaudiaCenter drinking bear). Largely in order to make DaShiv's hopefully forthcoming photos look better, here are some terrible cell phone pics: Expialadociousroll and roll truck roll, and DaShiv looking about as blurry as he was probably feeling at that moment. Oh, and the poet I always get confused with Robinson Jeffers is Randall Jarrell, and I can't remember what the other thing I forgot was.

No. Shh. The first rule about is that you don't talk about . But you sound down so email me or something if you want to kick it.

Er, "expialidocious." Somehow roll truck roll looks as though he's been rendered by Francis Bacon in that shot.

Yay! It was fun meeting everyone. I'll definitely go to an East Bay meetup. And for anyone who was there, Fremont isn't as bad as I was making it out to be, I just moved there and don't know anyone/haven't found a good coffeeshop yet.

Actually I didn't shoot enough photos to be worth posting, so you're all on your own here.

I'd do an East Bay thing.

and fishfucker, the Tenderloft (as I knew it) is long gone. Unless the current tenants have adopted the name.
But by mentioning Spaz and TL, you make me wonder if I know you...

I actually was in Mission that afternoon, but was saying goodbye to some friends who were going back to the UK that evening...if you know the area, I'd definitely check out the rooftop bar at Elements Hostel around 22nd & Mission - AMAZING view of the city, especially on Sunday's freakshow of a weekend....

Shame I couldn't make it. Loved SF, though - you're lucky, lucky people that live there...

oneirodynia ...

it's quite possible, though i haven't really been part of the experimental/electronic scene in SF since 2004 or so.

it's a little sad to hear the tenderloft is gone -- i used to live something like two blocks from it, so it was a real convenient spot to go to. Personally, i can't believe they got away with throwing some of the stuff they did, but, hey, it was the tenderloin.

Hey, I know I'm late, but just wanted to say I had a great time at the meetup. Especially all the poetry talk, which has inspired a forthcoming FPP.

No photos, DaShiv? Bah.

you're lucky, lucky people that live there...

Lucky, lucky, yes. An poor, very poor. And lucky.
