Anyone want to set up a NC meetup so that I can crash it?
posted by hermitosis to MetaFilter Gatherings at 2:08 PM (46 comments total)

I will be staying near UNC from Saturday from March 31 to Tuesday April 3, and would like to take advantage of this opportunity to meet some mefites on any of those dates. The location must be accessible by public transportation. Any takers?

That'd be awesome. I'd be up for that.

Any takers?

No, because you'd then be encouraged to attend, at which point you'd be technically invited, albeit in a semi-formal fashion. Crashing requires sneakiness, such as a sockpuppet, and maybe some lurking. The best you can hope for at this point it to walk backwards through the rear door of wherever the shindig will be held, while clutching an empty glass, though there's nothing shameful about being invited into a MetaMeetup.

Well, maybe it is a little shameful. The free MP3 player/camera combo and the timeshare real estate slideshow are a bit tiresome, but they're generally quite brief.

Maybe it would be best then if y'all could plan the meetup and then make sure I was explicitly not invited. But do please make sure you keep the details in this thread so that my nose can be fairly rubbed in my exclusion, and so that I know exactly where and at what time it will take place, so that I can make sure to stay far away from it!

I'm in Raleigh and bikeful/carless right now but if someone organizes something in Chapel Hill I'll do my best to find a way in.
posted by mediareport at 7:39 AM on March 13, 2007

I'll go as long as hermitosis isn't invited.
posted by paleography at 8:02 AM on March 13, 2007

I'd go as long as there were no little signs with people's names on them. Or cameras.

So I guess I wouldn't be going, then.
posted by pinky at 8:12 AM on March 13, 2007

My first reaction to that, Pinky, was "Even if no one brings a camera, there would still probably be a surveillance camera in the bar." And that's when I realized how badly I need to get out of New York City for a while.

Anyhow I promise not to take your picture, but if you don't come I am going to make shout-outs to you at every meetup I attend from now on, and believe me when I say I am prolific when intoxicated...
posted by hermitosis at 8:45 AM on March 13, 2007

I mean, if I was invited.
posted by hermitosis at 8:46 AM on March 13, 2007

I never said I wouldn't like shout-outs to *me* - I can be bought.
posted by pinky at 9:01 AM on March 13, 2007

Well then, I'll keep that in mind this sunday at our NYC gathering...
posted by hermitosis at 9:03 AM on March 13, 2007

mediareport, I'm in Raleigh too. If someone organizes it, I'd be happy to give you a ride.

"In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress." --John Adams

But five or more is a meetup! Can one of you now recommend a venue for everyone else to subsequently argue about?

One of these days I'm going to host one in Fayetteville. None of you live near me so I will meet with myself at a Starbucks, take a pic of myself with my camera phone holding the world's largest shoutout poster while I scarf down a white chocolate mocha.

Wearing bunny ears.

Scheduling would be a snap.

The friend I am staying at recommended Hell as an entertaining locale, as well as Fuse. He also mentioned Tyler's, from your list.

I am a fan of any place that lends itself to on-site arcade games, but then I grew up in Arizona (no accounting for my taste) and am spoiled by the likes of Barcade. Though of course I must eventually defer to your indigenous expertise on the subject.

I'd imagine that getting together on Saturday the 31st would be the easiest for all the working stiffs who did not receive a huge wad of Passover vacation days. Eveningish? Seven o'clock?

hell - right!

That would be a swell place to meet - only prob. is that it is members-only. I have a membership, but I'm not sure how many I can get in with it.

passover vacation days. ha.

I'm driving however long it takes to crash konolia's meet-up.

I'll wear a ninja costume and be in the background of all of the camera phone shots.

I'd be in on this, but I'm going to Morehead City on that Saturday and up to Virginia Sunday and Monday. Konolia, lemme know if you do a Fayetteville meetup, preferably at a barbeque place.
posted by marxchivist at 1:26 PM on March 13, 2007

Members-only! I like a challenge. I'll call them and let them know that a dozen or so of us would like to have a meetup there and that word of our meeting (with pictures) will appear on a community weblog with over 50,000 users. Perhaps that will soften their policy.

I don't consider the decision final, by any means; we can always choose somewhere else. But as a pushy New Yorker and a professional event-planner, I'm curious to see what they say.

I spoke to someone at Hell. She said that they would be glad to have us, and that each member can sign in three people, and if we ran up short, on a Saturday there would be plenty of members hanging around who would be happy to sign us in if necessary. I told her we'd see how many people we ended up with, and get back to them. From her friendly demeanor it seems the situation would flexibly work out in our favor regardless.

My friend in Chapel Hill is a member, so that means we have two so far. If it pleases the crowd, I vote we give it a shot.

There are a lot of good restaurants in Chapel Hill, too, so maybe we can meet for dinner somewhere around 7 and then go to Hell for a couple of drinks, and the folks who want to stick around can enjoy the smoke and fire as much as they want. Saturday night sounds good; for what it's worth, later on Hell's usually really crowded and loud. Hard to talk without raising your voice is what I remember, but that's not necessarily a terrible thing.

We shouldn't have a problem getting into Hell; I know Bronwyn and her husband Mark, two of the owners (pretty sure they still own it; I haven't been in years but I don't think they've sold - 3.2.3 would know for sure). It's definitely a fun place with a great jukebox. And air hockey, for settling old MeTa scores. I was just about to post that I'd talk to them to get us in if we need to, but looks like hermitosis already found out about Hell's general coolness.

And thanks, Earbucket!

Sounds like a great plan, mediareport. Closer to the date we can figure out how many people to make a dinner reservation for. Two of my distinguishing characteristics are that I love all kinds of food and I lose gracefully at air hockey.

The above comment is what happens when I don't check to see who is logged in on the household computer. I am not thankyoujohnnyfever!

So shall we add our meetup to the sidebar? 7 pm dinner (location TBA) and then drinks and air hockey annihilation at Hell, on Saturday March 31st?
posted by hermitosis at 1:20 PM on March 19, 2007

Sounds good.

I'm the reigning air hockey champ at Hell...

you must have strong upper arms, then.

Okay. folks. Meetup is nigh! What kind of places are to be considered for dinner on Saturday?

Also, be sure to mention soon whether you plan to attend, in case a reservation must be made. Otherwise you can just meet us later at Hell.

The Mellow Mushroom on Franklin Street has pizza, beer, and the finest calzones you'll ever lay your tastebuds upon.
posted by EarBucket at 5:43 PM on March 26, 2007

I think that Mellow Mushroom closed EarBucket.

Matkline is right, although there's one in Raleigh if you're really jonesing for one of those calzones.

Well, shucks. Shows you how often I get up to Chapel Hill.
posted by EarBucket at 4:51 AM on March 28, 2007

I hope and plan to be there.

Ill be able to check on the status of this on the morning of, but as of now I am not quite sure where to meet you lovely folks.

Dinner at 7, Hell at say 8:30-ish in case any stragglers prefer to go straight there?
posted by hermitosis at 5:19 PM on March 29, 2007

So, we need to make a decision about dinner pretty soon....anybody?
posted by EarBucket at 9:50 AM on March 30, 2007

I think I can be there, but it'd help if a decision gets made tonight :).

how randomly i am woken from my sleep. you know, i never read the metatalk trainwreck anymore. thank dog for the meetup sidebar.

i hereby declare dinner will be at fuse (403 West Rosemary Street; website appears broken) at 7pm. because i hate hell, especially in hot and humid weather, and bet that once y'all find your way to fuse, you'll be so comfy you won't stray from there.
posted by 3.2.3 at 3:22 PM on March 30, 2007

btw, you won't need reservations at fuse. nor would they take any.

damitol, what happened to that post? i mean to say, the moaners cd release party is saturday night at the cat's cradle.

time for a drink. right now.

Fuse it is. I walked past it tonight (I is herez!) and know where it is. See you at 7!

If it will help anyone coordinate last minute, you should email me and I'll happily pass along my cell number.
posted by hermitosis at 6:44 PM on March 30, 2007

I'd like to go, but I already had a long drive today. Hope there'll be another meetup for this area soon (in other words, please get along with each other and have lots of witty conversation).

Thanks guys, I had a swell time and will post the photos ASAP! And am glad I'm here for a few more days so I can take another crack at the mango trifle.
posted by hermitosis at 8:29 AM on April 1, 2007

I had a fine time. After you guys left Hell, I played the entirety of Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of the Heat on the jukebox, then went to the Cradle and was blown away by The Moaners.

So now, what's this all about, matkline?:
