old-fashioned names April 1, 2007 6:46 PM Subscribe
Can anyone help me find that great AskMe post from a while back that was about finding a nice, semi-unusual, old-fashioned boy's name for a baby?
It was the second one, cortex. Thanks a bunch.

The baseball-loving man of an expecting couple name Wagner wanted to name their son Honus. Distinctive? Yes. So much so that the wife and most women did not know why.
End of story: the baby is a girl.

um, mathowie? cortex? Check your watches. We seem to have jumped into super daylight savings time. It is just after 8:00PM as I type.

Yeah, there's something odd going on with the timing. My preference page disagrees with the reality of what I'm seeing, too.

FWIW, I've created a flickr set of good old fashioned (and bizarre) names that I've found in cemeteries, specifically for threads like this.

I was just thinking today (rarity) that if I had a son, he'd be Lucien Percival Leander Moonbird. I'm going to love this askme.

You know, everybody pronounces this "HOE-nus," but since it represents the German Hans, surely it must have been intended to be said HAH-nus? Anybody got any century-old audio file of someone saying his name?
Totally off topic: The Mets won last night! Let's go Mets!

My blackberry did the same thing yesterday... Definitely something weird going on, and not just on MeFi.

I was looking at this post, and the one immediately below it, and my confused, early-morning brain read "flameworthy, but old-fashioned boy's names". I thought, I don't know why anyone would want to do that, but okay: Adolf, Satan, Sue, Nancy, etc.
