A tree grows in San Francisco. Shift always seemed rather snooty about MeFi, and they once again left it out of their 100 top web sites (while embracing Plastic), but it was a nice surprise to find this front of the mag feature.

"MetaFilter's vibe is an intelligent one, civil, respectful. It's a space where well-thought-out arguments and ideas, supported by good research, are highly valued."

Oh man, do I like when it is like that.

Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating it.

Any site that embraced Plastic over MeFi is obviously more "corporate" than searching for the true heart of the 'net.

The Shift article was kinda weak, no? It didn't break any new ground and was shorter than I thought it should be.

Changing the subject, I've been getting bored with most of the sites I've come to visit on a regular basis. Can you all share cool new sites, not necessarily weblogs, that you visit on a daily basis? No A-list blogs, not necessarily stuff like Fark or Something Awful...I'm not sure what I'm looking for but I'm kinda bored by the net these days....

Karl's snapped. Put him down.

But I've also wondered how MeFi grew into the behemoth it is today. I mean, I remember following a link from Glassdog to it, and it was small then, no bigger than an apple. Was it really the Cool Sighting thing that triggered the boom?

Was it really the Cool Sighting thing that triggered the boom?

It seems to be. I think Lance pointed to it the week before the cool sighting thing. After the project cool sighting of the day thing, the site seemed to finally have a critical mass, and there'd be a comment in every thread.

FWIW, gen, some things by others that I check regularly, besides MeFi/cnn/AICN/theonion:

music:
Pitchfork Media | Splendid | Nude as the News

art:
flip flop flyin | little rocket | exploding dog | devoted bee

comics:
Pentasmal | Avalon

misc:
The Morning News | TheOneRing (LOTR goodness) | neuma | crush.nu (though defunct) | kickups (i'm freakin' addicted!)

and, of course, everyone's got their list of blogs, for me, it's:
matt | ftrain | rebecca | zeldman | kottke | daniel (if he returns...)
neil gaiman | mr wheaton.

i know; i'm a celebrity groupie.

I like how we're both referring to the Cool Sighting thing as a "thing."

And really, Karl, you're scaring not only me, but the children.

daniel (if he returns...)

He has indeed done that very thing. As a friend and someone whose site he so kindly hosts, I am overjoyed by this.

The big question now is... was that a Diesel Sweeties shirt or was it some straight-up Red Robot unit?
